19 February 2011 Happy Birthday Mum. That is how the morning started. I hopped out of bed and along the lane to use the phone to call Mum to wish her a happy birthday. That is the first time that we have used an actual phone during our trip since we have been able to use Skype everywhere else (and our mobiles with a local sim in Aus). Here in the Cook Islands, wifi is bought in megabyte packages rather than units of time, never seems to be free, and is pretty expensive when you consider how quickly anything other than zipping through e-mails and checking Facebook (or your favourite blog ;-) ) uses up those megs. As the call came to an end the rain came down so I sheltered for short while before ... read more

17th February 2011 We awoke to the noise of the bloody cockerel again this morning - we may have been converted to early rising but this was taking the biscuit. So we went to the toilet and went back to bed until a sensible hour. When we awoke again it was approaching 9am which is very late for us but the lack of aircon means that we don't sleep very well, and as such awake feeling like its bedtime. Only our own sheer force of will gets us out of bed at all. I had some leftovers and we then tried to make a plan for the day. We had both decided that we wanted to get out of this hostel as it is the pits, but with super expensive and unreliable wifi, we would ... read more

The Blue View Wow, what a place. A place that I had wanted to see more of since my last visit a decade ago. A place I now want to come back to and explore even more. The first place I can truly say I could emigrate to. Now I just have to convice the wife. This is a place that is stunningly beautiful, where every corner reveals yet more amazing scenery, and just when you think it can't get any better, it does. It is a country where they know the value of their wild areas, and look after them very well, yet also make them accessible to the populace. In that regard they are light years ahead of us in the UK. When was the last time you found a usable public convenience ... read more

16 February 2011 Our time in New Zealand had come to and end, we were Paualess and had once again set our alarm to an hour suitable to ensure that we would not have a rush on to get to the aiport. Unusually, we both slept for the night. It is quite usual when we know that we have to be at an airport in the morning that one or both of us can neither get to sleep or stay asleep. I say this with one slight qulalification. I did sleep but, courtesy of Inception I had rather lurid dreams which involved one of Gregg's colleagues storming out of her job among other things. For the sake of his sanity upon returning to work, I seriously hope that there was no premonitionary quality to that ... read more

Monday 14th 2011 Time is drawing to an end here, and we don’t like it. We have really enjoyed our time on these two islands, and have probably crammed in more here in three weeks than at any other time on our trip. This is in the main part down to the decision to hire Paua. Anyway enough of that there will be time to wax lyrical in the round up. Today was about moving on again. Our last real trip before we give the van back. Waking with the early morning again, as is now our routine, we showered etc and packed up ready to hit the road. We were gone by 8am and the first part of the trip involved us taking the small car ferry across the water to the historical side ... read more

12 February 2011 The sunrise was stunning and I wanted to stay but we hadn't booked another night in Raglan. I think we were both more than a little sad to be moving on but, if we were to head North, we needed to move this morning. We had been lucky enough at Solspace to have access to a fridge so the cool box (or 'chilly bin' as they call them here) had been redundant for a few days. This necessitated a quick stop at the supermarket in town for a bag of ice before we got on our way. We had been advised that that is the best way to keep the contents of the cool box cool and it does work pretty efficiently. However, and that is a big however, you also have ... read more

10th February 2011 Our slight change in plans yesterday meant we weren't in such a rush this morning. We had a plan to go and visit the set of Lord of the Rings, where you can do a tour of Hobbiton. The first tour of the day wasn't until 9:50 so we had time on our hands - so much so that we had a plan to stop off on the road there and go for a walk. We hadn't slept that well as we had been disturbed by the trucks overnight, so we were a bit sluggish getting away. We got on the road and after about 25 minutes we stopped in a small town for a bit of breakfast. I noticed that the town was called Ngatea, and thought I'd check out how ... read more

8 February 2011 We would have liked to linger a little longer in Taupo however we have a plan and that involved once again moving on. Today we were headed in the direction of the Bay of Plenty (named by Captain Cook who, apparently, noticed how abundant the local area was) where we planned to stay at one of two DOC campsites that we had pinpointed. First stop however was Rotorua. Because we both have a childish sense of humour, we were quite some distance from the town when we both started asking if the other could smell rotten eggs. Rotten eggs? Well, Rotorua is home to the most active geothermal area in New Zealand. Think hot springs, geysers, mud pools and sulphur - giving the air that unmistakable tang of rotten eggs. It is ... read more

6th February 2011 This morning was meant to be another early wake, but somehow we had remained in the land of slumber until the shockingly late hour of 7:15am, practically a lie-in for us early risers! On pulling back the curtains we realised why this had occurred. We were blanketed in mist, dampening any sound, had there been any to wake us in this remote spot, and in the process removing any chance of being woken by the sun. Neither of us was keen to shake of the arms of slumber once we had woken, and we dozed for a short while before finally stirring enough to make a cuppa (much easier when camping these days as neither of us need milk after our time in Asia, and so we don‘t need to worry about ... read more

4 February 2011 This morning was pencilled in as one for a lie in since we had Nelson in our sights for tonight's stop and we knew that it was just under 100km away (a helpful sign just across of the road from the campsite told us that) - there was therefore no hurry to get moving in the morning. The trouble was that our bodies seem to rather like early rises and we were therefore awake at the usual time of 6.30am. Since we weren't in a rush, we executed a leisurely morning tea routine, probably played a couple of hands of Monopoly Deal and then set out on our way. I dimly recalled that, as I was drifting off to sleep last night, Gregg said something about how wonderful it would be if ... read more
