Geo: -36.8474, 174.766It seems like only 3.5 months ago I was at Auckland airport ready to board Flight MH123 to KL and yet here I am again. This time with much less luggage, only a carry on bag and no winter coats to cart around. Thanks to the wonderful Margy I am here on good time. With all the Auckland traffic dramas lately it could have been an adventure just getting here. So where am I off to? Nine days on an Intrepid tour in Cambodia and then a few days in KL. So Christmas day in Phnom Penh, New Year in Siam Reap and some trekking, kayaking and biking in between.I am not sure how the blog will go without my tea lady Linda to keep me going, I will have to find a drinks ... read more

Geo: -45.2517, 169.389Despite all the fantastic things we have seen and done over the last month, it is really hard to beat a gathering of the clan in beautiful Central Otago. Big brother Earl turned 70 (he is much much older than me obviously) and we had all his siblings bar one (she is tripping around France - itchy feet must be a family trait), all his descendants, a couple of cousins, an uncle and his in-laws plus all the Lauder locals. Needless to say it was a riotous weekend with a ton of laughs. I'm the shy one of the family so you can image what the others are like.It was also special to be able to soak in the big Central Otago landscape, and compare it to what we had seen recently. Geo: -36.8474, 174.766To use flying parlance we had a 'touch and go' in Auckland, arriving home at about 1:30 am and then after a snooze and breakfast, off to the airport again to head further south. Barry met us at Dunedin airport and we had cheese rolls ( of course) at his brand new house at the mill. It looks great but due to jetlag, I didn't take any photos (doh). I got the guided tour of the sawmill and I am sure some if the gear there is older than what we saw in some of the museums in Wales! But a great set-up all the same. Luckily Linda had a couple of photos she had prepared earlierThen, on to Lauder via the high country.... read more

Geo: 51.4989, -0.127287We were out the door bright and early and off to our usual bus stop. We felt quite superior as we heard the tourists trying to work out where they were and where they should be getting off for what sight. Our first stop was St Paul's Cathedral for a quick look. Yet another incredible building that is too hard to get photos that do it justice. Suddenly I am the gawking tourist again. The main event of the day was the Tower of London. Queues weren't anything near what we had been led to believe and we joined the Yeoman's guided tour. There are 37 yeoman of the Tower at any one time and they all have served at least 22 years in Her Majesty's military service with a rank of at least sergeant major ... read more

Geo: 51.4989, -0.127287After a leisurely start on Sunday morning we caught up with the unchanging Andrew Bailey who kindly chauffeured us from the rental car drop off to the Reading train station. It was great to see him again and we swapped 'remember so and so from BCL' stories over coffee. We arrived at Paddington station all wide eyed and touristy but made our way without much drama to the Ambassador Hotel near Earl's Court. We ditched our bags and went exploring into Kensington Gardens which are just a 10 minute walk away. We joined the many folks enjoying the Sunday sun and took in the sights of Princess Diana Fountain, the Serpentine gallery and of course Kensington Palace. The wide open spaces are almost at odds with the elaborate adjacent architecture of the Albert Hall and ... read more

Geo: 51.455, -0.969088Breakfast at the Black Horse Inn was interesting, no option for cereal but the bacon sandwich (not toasted, on white bread) was popular! We decided to go to the much acclaimed Warwick Castle which opened at 10 today instead of the usual 9am. While we were waiting, we found out that 'thousands' of cubs and scouts were going to be there today. Given the noise that the first 20 were making, we decided to head to the hallowed city of Oxford.Despite setting the Satnav to 'country lane' mode, we were soon hurtling down the M? at 70mph so we diverted to Banbury, of 'ride a cock horse to Banbury Cross' fame. We did see cock horses, the cross and the fine lady. Another pretty town, with a canal though the middle so we watched ... read more

Geo: 52.2819, -1.58447Well, it is The Globe pub at Warwick, not Stratford Upon Avon though we have spent a very pleasant few hours wandering through Shakespeare's delightful home town. There was a food fair there today so we had traditional Indian and Spanish food for lunch.Yesterday we shopped to we dropped at Rugby - took all of 20 minutes - and then found ourselves a pleasant spot to stop for our last night on Cameo, our trusty canal boat. We went rambling around the countryside before having pizza and and a can of ale for dinner! We returned to Rose Canal boats this morning and have traded our lovely 54' long home for a car and set off for Shakespeare country and then on to the town of Warwick which is very pleasant. We have visited the ... read more

Geo: 52.3732, -1.26174Heading home from the pub yesterday afternoon we saw a real live FOX, again too far away for a photo so you will just have to trust us. Today was a big one on the canal boating, we had to navigate three LOCKS without the aid of Clive and to our delight it went well with no dramas, we were quietly confident, and mostly competent. The locks are really quite an ingenious and simple concept which revolutionised transportation, before the train was invented. Many of them are original (but with an element of grandfather's axe perhaps) and have been in situ for 200-300 years. After the locks we finally found somewhere to fill the water tank and have been able to have a decent shower and wash our SOX and assorted smalls. We stopped at Rugby ... read more

Geo: 52.2911, -1.21004Well, we completed out 13 point turn without any drama whatsoever and are retracing our steps now. We are back in Braughton, it is starting to feel like home. The highlight of the last 24 hours was seeing two small Roe deer on the towing path near our boat at dusk last night. As it was raining we couldn't get a photo so you will just have to take our word for it. A couple of photos for Linda's grandchildren today - 'Cousin Jack' on the canal and 'Isla' who we will enjoy with pasta and Cambridge Cracker sausages!... read more

Geo: 52.2911, -1.21004Well not that bad but it has been steady drizzle all day. However we have braved the weather and moved on to Napton Junction - despite what the location on the blog says, it doesn't recognise some of these smaller places. An uneventful journey and George helped us moor (or 'tied us up' as Linda likes to say..) and then would have talked all day if it hadn't been raining. We have ventured out to Napton on the Hill and found their wonderful post office coffee shop with lovely staff - you must visit them if ever you are here. I am paying back in advertising for their good advice and free wifi.Tomorrow we turn around (hopefully) and head gently for home. We might even stop at Rugby in a day or two.... read more
