Geo: 64.1353, -21.8952First up a trip to the museum which was jolly good. Lots of old stuff they had dug up and some very good interactive explanations. We met an interesting character on the park bench on the way - see the photo. Lunch was a famous Icelandic hotdog, very yummy but too messy for photos. Then I discovered I am world famous in Iceland. I went to the bus station to get tickets for the afternoon's adventure and the girl behind the counter says 'excuse me for asking a strange question, but did you go to school with me in Italy?' She was right, we were at the language school in Castelraimondo at the same time. Then to really cap the story off, Linda says as I join her outside 'they must just about know ... read more

Geo: 64.1353, -21.8952Today was Golden Circle bus trip day and it actually was very good. Typical tourist bus but with a good guide and driver. The first stop was Fridheimar tomato greenhouses where they pick one tonne of tomatoes each day. They use local hot water to produce electricity and heat the greenhouses - the equivalent to a town of 3,000 people. Plants grow to 9m and the tomatoes make great soup. They also had Icelandic horses (but we didn't taste them).Next was the Geysir thermal area. Geysir is the name of the original Geysir there that all others are named after. It doesn't do anything these days and, quite frankly, NZ beats this site hands down, Strokkur erupted regularly though and the views were pretty good.In fact, the landscape is stunning - big, vast, barren ... read more

Geo: 64.1353, -21.8952Auckland - KL - Heathrow - Reykjavik took a bit over 36 hours but it was worth it. We arrived at about midnight and Saturday night here in downtown is very much a happening place. Must admit, not so much for us though. Accommodation at Thor Guest House is cosy, convenient to everything but not cheap. Iceland prices are more expensive than New Zealand in general.Today we did our own walking tour of the city and did 20,800 steps according to my pedometer. A couple of churches including the very spectacular Hallgrimskikja with amazing views from the top and its big organ. The Settlement exhibition, an excavation of a longhouse with a fantastic interactive display around it, was really well done. The weekend market was fun, like any market, a mixture of second hand ... read more

Geo: -36.6844, 174.734As you would expect, we are ready hours before we need to be so it is time for a cup of tea and post the first blog.We are flying Malaysian Airlines to KL then Heathrow. The final leg is Icelandair to Reykjavik arriving midnight Saturday their time.  I'm not even going to add up how many hours travel that will be. We haven't thought too much about the perils of two sisters travelling together for four weeks - well not that we admit to each other - so hopefully we will still be talking when we get back! So, we hope you tune in from time to time to see what we are up to. Until next post,Eg skil ekki, as we say in Iceland.  ... read more
