On our last morning we were up early again, this time for another boat trip on the Ganges. It is still pretty hectic with many people coming to the river to do puja at sunrise - washing, praying and making offerings. We go up river past the dhobi ghats where the laundry is being done to the second crematory ghat which has the traditional fires as well as an electric crematorium. The buildings at each ghat seems to be have built by someone important from a different state so you can see the influence of all different parts of India and Nepal - and Britain - as we go past. We drift down river as the sun comes up and get out just after the other crematory ghat which is less busy than last night. We ... read more

We left lovely Udaipur yesterday bound for Varanasi vie Delhi. Well, we managed the first part... The flight to Delhi was delayed and as we only had an hour between flights we didn't make the Varanasi one. However our travel agency Periplus showed great initiative. The agent recognised another travel agent who was on our flight and asked him to look after us. He was fantastic, did his best to get us on another flight and when that didn't work made sure we, our bags and the local Delhi agent all ended up in the same place. So, we had an unscheduled night in Delhi. I wasn't able to get a ticket to the cricket but the hotel did put the English version up in the big screen in the lobby for us. Shame about the ... read more

An early-ish start to the day with a tour of the Maharana's palace of which our hotel is just a small part. The palace was built by successive rulers of the area over about 400 years. The current family now live in part of it with the rest being a museum and two hotels We got in ahead of the crowds, which included 600 cadets from schools all over India. (Linda, a little reminiscent of the scouts at the castle In England). The palace is well maintained and there are lovely paintings, frescoes, mosaics and mirror work all through it. The paintings include the miniatures with very fine work which are a speciality of this region. Next stop, the Ladies Garden, for the Maharana's wives and daughters is actually about 5 km from the palace. It ... read more

We were up early for a 6am start on our walk up the 753 steps to the top of Elephant Rock, unfortunately someone forgot to tell our guide. One of the waiters was co-opted and off we went, with him in this lovely white uniform and 9m of turban. Thanks to the quick pace he set, we got to the top in time to watch the sunrise. Rajasthan is surprisingly green and has quite a few lakes, albeit many are man made. The view was stunning and the light was beautiful. There is a large elephant statue on the top of the hill and a small temple. While the guide was showing me the temple, the local holy man came chanting up the hill which was rather magical - or mystical. We had a cup of ... read more

We departed our lovely Pal Haveli this morning after meeting the artist who had done all the beautiful frescos in the hotel. We also left our somewhat frustrated/frustrating guide behind and have our driver who seems to have sussed us out and spent a lot of time smiling at our conversations with/about the guide yesterday. About 1/2 hour out from the city we stop at a wholesalers and we are in fabric heaven. We emerge with more purchases and tell him he is a bad man. He laughs and tells us his wife shops more than we do. Tonight's accommodation is a royal hunting lodge in a small village and it is absolutely magnificent. We feel like princesses. The rooms are lovely. I have my own balcony, dressing room, beautiful bathroom - and I have the ... read more

Time to play catchup... Yesterday we left Amritsar and had a relatively uneventful pair of flights to get to Delhi and then Jodhpur. Flying in and out of Delhi reinforced how hideously polluted India is. The visibility at the airport, watching the planes in front of us take off, was no more than 3km. Fortunately Jodhpur is somewhat better and we have had a delightful time here. Yesterday afternoon we checked into our room at the haveli. This apparently used to be the town house of one of the rural landlords. However taxes and hard times have meant they, like many others, have turned their palatial homes into hotels. It is fantastic, all red sandstone, plaster, paintings, steep stairs and arches. We went by tuk tuk to spend the afternoon with Ishtar Dewan, a local tie ... read more

What a full on day of contrast yesterday was. There are many monuments and statues around Amritsar, to various important people but also just because, like the ones depicting dancers we saw on the way to the Golden Temple, the primary site for Sikhism. Apart from being a stunning complex with pristine, hurt-your-eyes white marble buildings and paving surrounding the rich golden temple which sits in the middle of a lake, the whole atmosphere is quite special. People calmly go about their devotions, praying, purifying themselves in the water amongst the large crowd. No one is bothered by anyone else or by tourists taking photos. It is a very peaceful and tolerant environment. The kitchens provide thousands of free meals 24 hours a day and there are permanent and volunteer staff. We get a tour through ... read more

We had a couple of hours before leaving Shimla this morning so we took the lift from the hotel up to the Mall. Shimla is steep - seriously steep. We had to get a lift up from the street to the lobby of our hotel, and then from the sixth floor to the Mall above. There is a public lift next door. Think of the cable car in Wellington, and then go vertical. The Hide Out coffee shop with it's first floor view of the street served great coffee and provided a wonderful view of everyone starting their day. The car ride from Shimla back to Chandigarh was uneventful. Our driver must have been briefed that we were nervous passengers as we even got passed by buses. Once we hit the 4 lane highway (with separator) ... read more

First up today was a visit to Viceregal Lodge, built in just 4 years in the 1880s in the style of Balmoral Castle. It was the summer residence during the Raj and was the site of many of the negotiations prior to partition in 1947. It is now used by the Indian Institute of Advanced Study. 60 or so post doctorate students are selected each year to continue their research here. The gardens are extensive with plenty of English flowers. The grounds included a fire station and a squash court. The house was the first in Shimla to have electricity and a full fire protection system. We then went the the opposite end of the spectrum and visited the Jakhu Temple dedicated to Hanuman the monkey god. As expected, there were plenty of monkeys around. We ... read more

This morning's adventure was a two hour train trip on the famous Shimla railway line. It was built by the British in 18 something so they could come up here from Delhi in the heat of summer and drink gin and frolic. It is called a toy train for some reason - perhaps because of the narrow 2'6" gauge (and average gradient of 3% for the train spotters) but it is a fully functional passenger line that runs between Shimla and Kalka everyday. We only went as far as Khandaghat, about half way. The seats were firm, but with some padding, and the views were great however it was hard to get many good photos because of the trees that zipped past. This afternoon we explored The Mall, an area at the top of Shimla that ... read more
