South America » Ecuador » Galápagos » San Cristóbal Island September 8th 2018

Our last full day in Galapagos and it really is a full day. We start with a steep walk up the volcanic Punta Pitt on Isla Cristobal. we are rewarded with plenty of photo opportunities of the Red and Blue footed boobies. This is quite a busy spot with lots of tourists. We have been spoilt up until now by having each stop more or less to ourselves. We find these intruders rude and noisy. On the way back I see the very rare Blue Footed Australian Booby and it’s smaller mate with darker plumage - also known as Wayne and Narelle. The landscape is striking with high, very steep volcanic rocks, stark flat areas and a few scrubby bushes. After we clamber back down to the golden beach, it is time for another snorkel. The ... read more

South America » Ecuador » Galápagos » Española Island September 7th 2018

Overnight we travel for about 6 hours - the boat is quite noisy when we are under motor -and in the morning we are at Isla Espanola. We go ashore and discover this is where all the marine iguanas hang out. There are hundreds of them all sunning themselves on the rocks. And even more seals, a lot of cute baby ones too. Another highlight of the island are the waved albatross who are nesting. The chicks are huge and very fluffy. More lava lizards of all sorts of colours. Mockingbirds that wander between our feet. It really is astounding how little fear they have. Several times we have to stop and let the locals pass. Freightor birds spot some dead fish and a fight breaks out with all of them swooping down trying to get ... read more

Early in the morning we cruise to Sante Fe and after a hearty breakfast head to shore. There are plenty of sealions to greet us. Alexis, our guide, explains the differences between sealions and seals but we get interrupted by the arrival of a young hawk. We walk up through the scrubby rocky low lying neighbourhood and see plenty of lava lizards and several land iguanas. Another young hawk also appears. The frigate birds fly overhead, they have long forked tails and the males have that impressive bulging red throat when excited. Near the end of the walk - and no surprises I am near the back again - a hawk lands on a branch right besides the track. Nothing seems to have any fear of us. The sealions lie across the path and just walk ... read more

Another early-ish start today, leaving the luxury of the hotel at 4:30 to fly to Isla Baltra, the first of our Galápagos Islands. We have a stop off in Quayaquil along the way and I discover the Young Sheldon tv series - the precursor to The Big Bang - so snort with laughter rather than snore on the 3 hour trip. Everyone is obviously very excited to arrive and after the friendly customs people relieve us of USD100 we head off on a bus, then a ferry then another bus ending up after about an hour at Porto Ayora on Isla Santa Cruz. We transfer across to the Queen Beatrix, our home along with 14 others, for the next 5 days. The cabins are spacious and the meals are rather good. The crew are friendly. The ... read more

Today we checked out of our lovely hotel with cherubs and roses in the night club area and into our much posher hotel in the new part of the city. I am relaxing in the hotel provided robe and slippers with coffee percolating in the background. We spent today on - and off - the Hop on Hop off bus. The plan was to explore the old part of the city and so we did, after navigating the very busy traffic. The buses are double deckers and are a great way to see the city, with views over the traffic and into people’s backyards. We hopped off at the Basílica, a church still under construction after several centuries. Apparently a disaster will stirike when it is finished, so they keep on working on it. Then back ... read more

After a leisurely start, I felt like my body clock was at last synchronised with the local time zone. The headache -altitude? Jet lag? Pisco sours? - had gone too. Our adventure today was to the Mitad dal Mundo - the equator, only a 35min drive from our hotel. The drivers here are good, no dramas like you find in Asia or France! Our first stop was the Intinan Museum which was far more interactive than most museums. We saw a range of sun gods, including one who looks like Yoda and learnt about some of the local tribes and customs. Then we got to the equator and played games - walking a straight line (fail), arm wrestling the young female guide (fail), balancing an egg on a nail head - success and I have the ... read more

After a VERY early start at 1:30 we left Santiago, the good thing was we got to see the Bellavista area in full swing. First flight to Lima and then, an hour later, on to Quito in Ecuador. We were treated to a fiery sunrise on the Lima flight and then some fantastic scenery on the way to Quito. The mountains are amazingly steep with zigzag tracks up to villages with terraced gardens. There are lakes and braided rivers down the valleys. The plateaus are well cultivated and you can easily see the fields neatly laid out. I did ponder whether this is the sort of country we will be walking over in a couple of weeks time... Quito itself spans across ravines and plateaus - kind of like Hawea and Wanaka but on steroids. It ... read more

South America » Chile » Santiago Region » Santiago September 1st 2018

After a complimentary Pisco sour at the hotel restaurant we slept until about 9:30 - very unusual for me. So it was up and about in quick order, after breakfast of course. First stop was the fanicular - or cable car - 300m up to San Cristobal hill where there is a very large statue of the Virgin Mary. The view was good if a bit hazy and there were heaps of people especially cyclists exploring the park. We headed back down and explored the Bellavista area, famous for it’s street art. There are lots of restaurants in the main part but we soon got down some side streets. Needless to say I took tonnes of photos and could have stayed there for hours. However with only one day in town we had no time to ... read more

South America » Chile » Santiago Region » Santiago August 31st 2018

After an uneventful flight we arrive in Santiago at 2pm Friday. It is surprisingly grey and cold but the airport necessities were efficient, until we looked for our pickup. Lucky though, Linda found an alternate pick up (I am going to have to keep an eye on her..) and we determined that Flight centre had let us down. I negotiated a taxi rate of $35 US with Linda’s new friend and we headed off. He introduced us to a driver and we got on a bus, to go to a car park where our driver scurried off and got a car - not sure whose! Half way to the hotel he says in his broken English 35,000 peso. The Chilean peso is approx 666 to the USD so this means about 50 USD. Needless to say ... read more

Well, my feet have got itchy again so where to now? Obviously South America, just because. Linda and I have decided to test the sisterly relationship and are sitting in the departure lounge at Auckland airport about to head to Santiago as step one of our four week northern South American adventure. No more clues just yet as to where we are going, but we have had to pack for hot, wet, cold, high, underwater and everything in between. I have bought a new camera with more zoom and a go-pro equivalent for underwater so I am hoping for lots of amazing photo opportunities to bore you with. Enough for now, more from Santiago tomorrow, where we arrive before we have left Auckland, have not got my head around that little fact yet. Hasta luego!... read more
