Saturday Aug 18 We had a great night’s sleep and a leisurely breakfast. Around 11:30, we got on the Skytrain and headed downtown to the waterfront. Far better than taking the car, maybe we’ll get to like the Ottawa light rail after it begins operation in December? The Star Princess was waiting for us and we began the slow process of getting on board. Three large cruise ships were leaving today, and US Customs computers were down, causing a bit of a wait. Against all rules, Ferdy packed a bottle of Scotch in his suitcase, which turned out to be no problem, our suitcases were delivered to our room intact, and with our booze. It wasn’t long before we got to meet our Australian friends on board and do some catching up. Departure was cool against ... read more

Well, our cruise to Alaska is now over and we’re off the two more weeks of adventures. We’ve not had Internet on board, way too expensive. So we shall try and catch up over the next few days, although we have a hectic schedule. Enjoy and feel free to leave comments! Friday Aug 17 Westjet flight to Vancouver was great. A bit bouncy leaving the Ottawa area though. Unfortunately our flight ran out of food, we got the last snack and many behind us never got to eat. Marion’s cousin Ken picked us up and let us settle in with some beer and smoked meat. We spent the afternoon walking around Steveston, where the Gulf of Georgia Cannery is located, a Parks Canada National Historic Site, the creation of which Ferdy was involved with. Lots of ... read more

This post has the same title as the one just before our Australia trip last Fall. Tomorrow morning early we fly to Vancouver to meet up with Ken & Jan who have kindly offered to put us up for the night and entertain us. And get us to Vancouver Canada Place to board our Star Princess ship on Saturday August 18. Great to be able to put in a family visit on this next adventure! We also look forward to meeting up with Geoff and Joy, and Mark and Kathy, our Australian friends with whom we have talked about this Alaska cruise for several years. That day is here now! The very long-standing friendship between Marion, Joy and Kathy predates any of them having met their current husbands, before kids, before middle age, before senior privileges. ... read more

These two days we travel from Perth back to Ottawa. Instead of paying the additional daily rate for another 2 or 3 hours of using our car on Saturday, we decided to turn our car in at 6 pm even though it meant hanging around the airport until flight time at about midnight. Marion did not believe in spending precious holiday time to organize her bags if she were going to spend that much time at the airport. So she did that at the airport. Good thing we were able to find a quiet spot at Terminal 3 which was under construction. Otherwise, airports just aren’t set up for this kind of operation! Our flight from Perth to Melbourne left about midnight and was only 3 1/2 hours, but because of the 3-hour time difference we ... read more

We get up early, since we want to have the breakfast special and go for our last walk on the beach before returning to Fremantle to shop. Marion really wanted to get back to True Blue, a place with original Aboriginee art that is well priced. It is now located in the Fremantle Market and is smaller than before. But the same owner Brian is still there and we had a chat with him. We also met several Aboriginees doing art work and playing the didgeridoo. Got some more hints to practice at home. For those of you who have seen Crocodile Dundee, you might remember the “bush telephone” that made this erie noise when he spun it around at the end of a string. It’s called a bull roarer and we picked one up for ... read more

We were very impressed by the Stay Hotel in Margaret River, that was the Quality Inn until two days ago. Very clean and friendly, but what surprised us most was the detail at which the room was presented. Every little bit of comfort, like slippers and plenty of toiletries, FREE mini bar including two beer, six soft drinks, two OJs, jelly beans, chocolate bars, bottled water, nuts, crackers, and off course free coffee and tea. In the morning, we spent a lot of time shopping here, some of "us" like that. We still wanted the fish and chip we missed out on last night, so on our way out of town we stopped in again at the Sea Garden Café for lunch, Ferdy had the shark and Marion the hake. Very nice indeed. Although we took ... read more

After the rain this morning, we say goodbye to our animal friends at Donnelly River and the Karri forests and head towards Augusta and the most southern point in Western Australia, Cape Leeuwin. There are stretches of road in this part of the country, where during any given hour of driving, we saw more emus than other cars. We are wary of potential kangaroo appearances but luckily we have no car-kangaroo meetings. It does happen a lot though, judging from the dead carcasses on the side of the highways. Cape Leeuwin (where the Dutch landed in the early 1600’s) is a cool place in that this is where the Indian Ocean meets the Southern Ocean, and combined with some rocky islands, this makes for a pretty turbulent sea. After a visit to the Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse, ... read more

So far during this vacation we have experienced many different aspects of this great country. We’ve experienced the urban scene in Melbourne and Adelaide. We’ve been on the bus with locals who may not have showered for a while. We’ve slept under the stars, hiked with young folk 50 years our juniors, we’ve been in the desert and in rough Outback towns, in the tropics where’s felt the 95% humidity, came within a foot or so of killer crocs, been on the beach at 6:30 AM with young and old. And much more. Now we’ve experienced the bush. After stops in Mandurah and Bunbury, we head for Donnelly River, way inland. April told us about this place deep into the karri forests, more than an hour away from civilization and cell phone coverage, and that includes ... read more

We needed a slow day today, so we stick around Perth and explore. First up is King’s Park and Botanical Gardens. For those of you who have seen it, you’ll know when we say this is one incredible place. Overlooking downtown Perth, which looks larger than we expected, and the mouth of the Swan River as it flows into the Indian Ocean, we can imagine what the early explorers saw in this place. Paradise. Give us our Canadian health care and pensions, and we’d retire in this area tomorrow, well maybe a bit closer to the Cottesloe beach! Since Perth is going into summer soon, the most spectacular blossoms have already passed with its varied flora going into summer survival mode, yet we see many beautiful flowers. Marion visited April here in 2012 and has seen ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Western Australia » Rottnest Island November 27th 2017

Rottnest (Wadjemup to the Aboriginees who were there as early as 20,000 years ago) got its name from the Dutch who called this island off Fremantle “Rottenest” for rats’ nest, although in modern Dutch that would have been spelled “Rattenest”. Small detail. They named it after these really strange-looking marsupials presently known as Quokkas, that have a head and tail like a rat and a body of a kangaroo, including the hind legs. They’re about the size of a cat and they are literally all over the island, and nowhere else in the world (we heard later there are some remote populations elsewhere in Australia), walking between people looking for leftovers or handouts. There’s a $50 fine for feeding them. Rottnest used to be attached to the mainland some 7,000 years ago, before rising ocean levels ... read more
