Today we headed for the Netherlands northern province of Friesland. Much of Friesland has been reclaimed from the North Sea, beginning with the first dikes around the year 1,000 AD. Slowly but surely the early mounds called “terpen” were no longer needed as safe havens for floods and were being abandoned and even removed. Early Friesland looked like open areas with low bush called heide or heath. At times flooded, at times dry, organic materials created peat, which was later mined for fuel. Excavated sites became shallow lakes so popular today for sailers and fishermen. Friesland is full of these lakes. Our first stop for today was Giethoorn. The band U2 had a song with reference to “street with no name”. Well, Giethoorn doesn’t even have streets in many places. Houses are built along canals and ... read more

The man at the ticket counter at Kasteel Heeswijk recognized us from last week when we had arrived just before closing time. I was impressed. We decided to take the full audio tour, available on tablet (computer ones, not the ones Moses used). Pretty good system. This castle too has been through the wars and proven to be both an effective protector of its owners and citizens of Heeswijk, as well as a place where many royals stayed, from Spain, France, England and the Netherlands. It’s gone through some ups and downs, having been left in disrepair, partially burnt and continuously having been under dispute as to ownership. Today we found all of the rooms to be lavishly decorated as they would have been in older times. This is certainly not your average 4-bedroom house in ... read more

Europe » Netherlands » North Brabant » Vught July 29th 2019

With nothing definitively planned for today, we slept in a bit and took our time getting ready. Kasteel Maurick in Vught was our first stop today. Nestled in a beautiful wooded area only meters away from the centre of Vught, this castle played a significant role during the 80-year war with Spain when Den Bosch was under siege. Today, it is not open as a castle, but is rented out for functions and events. However, the grounds are open to the public so we wander around and took some photos before we stopped at the restaurant for, just guess, coffee and dessert. We had been told that the St. Petrus church in Vught would be worth a visit, since it’s conversion to a community centre just recently. The church had sat empty for 15 years and ... read more

Europe » Netherlands » Limburg » Maastricht July 29th 2019

After the heat of the past few days, today’s drizzle and lower temperature of 18C are very welcomed here. A perfect day to drive to Maastricht, check out some museums and walk around a bit. Maastricht is located in the province if Limburg at the very south of the Netherlands. It’s a beautiful old city, dating back to Roman times. There’s even Roman ruins although we did not visit those today. It’s location on the River Maas (Meuse in French) makes for a great setting including boat tours, commercial shipping and entertainment along its banks. Today there was a kadefeest (party on the river bank) going on with a live band, lots of beer, and everyone being out, young and old, in the rain! The band was from Belgium and they were pretty good. Visiting family in the morning is a sure recipe for excellent coffee and rich desserts. A visit with Johan and Carlos in Den Bosch was no different. I had not seen my cousin Johan since he visited us when he was a 12-year old boy, he’s 51 now. We had seen a lot from him and Carlos in Facebook, since they are avid travelers, and it was sure nice to meet up. Marion could not get over their neighbourhood, being near a small canal that runs along people’s backyards filled with a variety of flowers, and kept spotlessly maintained of course. I had visited the Kilsdonkse Molen near Veghel in 2015 and wanted to make sure Marion got to see it. It’s the only operating wind and water mill in the Netherlands and maybe anywhere, and ... read more

Europe » Netherlands » North Brabant » Uden July 26th 2019

By 10 am the temperature was already in the thirties. After our morning coffee we settled into a shady spot under the chestnut tree in the backyard where there was a bit of a breeze, and were soon cooling off in the pool. Good time to do our laundry. We hung them outside and Marion’s was dry in less than an hour. I left mine out to dry when we left to meet friends from my teens in a town called Uden, about 30 km from Eindhoven. Everything seems to be that distance from here. It was so good to meet up with Cees and Henny, Ad and Herma, and Karla. Cees and Henny’s house is a real nice spot! Europe » Netherlands » South Holland » Gouda July 25th 2019

The Gouda Cheese Market is only on Thursday’s. So that’s where we headed today. About a two-hour drive got us there and we met up with friend Hans again, this time joined by his daughter Sterre-Lieve as well as his son we met several days ago. I believe we may be talking them into visiting us next year. Marion and I had visited the market back in 2002 with our daughters, but we did a more thorough tour of the city today. As with many of the Dutch cities, Gouda has a lot of history that dates back hundreds of years, not sure but at least back to say 1200 or so. The Sint-Jan church dates back to the 1500’s and was built as a Catholic Church, as all of the older churches were, but was ... read more

In spite of the heat, it was hard to get up this morning. Air conditioning in these parts are rare, since this kind of heat wave normally only lasts for a few days before the rains return. Not this summer. Windows and drapes are kept closed during the day to keep out the heat, then opened at night to get fresh and colder air back in. There are no insect screens here, so when the windows are open at night, we keep the lights low, or off, to keep away the few mosquitos they have here. The one or two that do get by our defences can be annoying though as you hear them buzzing around your naked skin. Our plan today was to stay in air-conditioned places like museums. We started off at the Nuenen ... read more

Europe » Netherlands » North Brabant » Eindhoven July 24th 2019

Two of my aunts are quite elderly, one is 96 and the other 93, and no trip here would be complete without a visit to these very spry ladies. Each live independently in retirement apartments and are a wealth of information for many stories, some quite funny, others less so. What was so satisfying was to see how positive they are, and how they present themselves. I’m loving having some of the same genes! After we got back to Eindhoven we had some quick dinner and a couple of cold ones, then walked over to the Philips Stadion to watch local professional voetbal (soccer) team, always a contender in The Netherlands (22 national titles), take on Basel from Switzerland in the Championship League. According to local “experts” the soccer was not all that good, but the ... read more

Europe » Netherlands » North Brabant » Tilburg July 22nd 2019

We just learned that the city of Tilburg, a mere 12 km from my home town of Vught, now has the largest summer fair in the country. It also happens that today is Rose (pronounced “rozz” Maandag, or what we might call Rainbow Monday. This is an event everyone talks about so we headed there today. We were not disappointed, it’s quite the show. Not only is the fair spread out all over the downtown area, we saw some pretty sick rides that I’m no longer ready to embark on. And of course the gay and lesbian communities put on quite the show, with all being dressed in various shades of pink (called rose in Dutch). The lavender fields on the Vughtse Heide are not yet in bloom, maybe another week. We’ll have to go back! ... read more
