Friday Sep 7 More water leaked overnight from the water supply to the dishwasher and we had to mop up a lot of water. We had advised the Resort of the leak twice yesterday, but the maintenance man that showed up this morning had not been told of our report until this morning. It was fixed about mid-afternoon, with some minor damage to the laminate floor. Other than that it was a slow morning to give ourselves a rest before the long drive back to Vancouver tomorrow. The plan was to visit Invermere this morning and try out the resort pool and hot tub this afternoon. After some shopping in Invermere (read Marion and Joy), we had lunch at Tim Hortons and then walked a section of the Old Coach Trail between Invermere and Radium. This ... read more

Thursday Sep 6 We consider ourselves quite lucky because we had another beautiful day. Temperatures reached 24C again and the smoke is almost gone. It was a bit chilly in the morning, but definitely time for short sleeves in the afternoon. The plan for today was to explore Yoho National Park, and we did. We first drove to Takakkaw Falls at the end of Yoho Valley Road, a very high waterfall that is 380 meters from its base, fed by glaciers and Icefields above. It’s possible to hike the spectacular 20 km Iceline Trail from here, something Ferdy did when still with Parks Canada, but this one is for really fit people and not to anyone’s liking today! The Natural Bridge is no longer traversable on foot, like it was years ago when Ferdy was first ... read more

Wednesday Sep 5 Another glorious day today! Low hanging fog in the Radium Hot Springs valley cleared as we got ready to go towards Banff again, this time to go for our gondola ride. Guess what, no crowds today, the long weekend is over and it appears as if most people have gone. No line-up for the gondola and we got to the top by 10:30. Although the sky was mostly blue, there was still this smokey haze between mountains, but not discernible to the nose here. There were more steps to the summit than we thought, but Geoff and Ferdy made it in good time to take the obligatory photos to show we were there. After a Starbucks coffee we headed back down to get on with the rest of the day. In the past, ... read more

Tuesday Sep 4 We started early again today to get to Lake Louise at a decent hour. On the way there, we hiked the Marble Canyon Trail in Kootenay all the way up to the waterfalls, maybe about 1.5 km in. Frost was clinging to wooden structures as we walked in the brisk sunny morning and air relatively clear of smoke, thanks to yesterday’s rains. We found the two red Muskoka chairs, a relatively new Parks Canada trademark to encourage visitors to explore more. We did not sit on them when we took our pictures, they were covered in frost and we did not wish to get our pants wet. The falls were spectacular to view, even with what must be considered reduced summer flow. We wondered what this place would look like in the Spring. ... read more

Monday Sep 3 The forest fires are all over the province. We had heard there had been several in Kootenay National Park where we are staying, and indeed we had seen and smelled the smoke. Today we saw the total destruction of some of the forests in the northern part on the way to the Trans Canada Highway. As we entered this area, we could smell the strong smoke and reacted to it, we saw the completely burnt forests all the way up the mountains. Luckily, it had also started to pour just after we left around 7am for our meeting with the Athabaska Glacier. As we entered the Icefields Parkway, things began to clear a bit, and we began to see the majestic Rockies, which much impressed Geoff and Joy. We saw some Bighorn Sheep ... read more

Sunday Sep 2 All four of us are beginning to show reaction to the ever present smoke. Sneezing, coughing, dry eyes and throat. Even though conditions have improved a lot because of recent rains, according to locals, we can feel it, and we are affected. The entrance into Kootenay National Park is incredible. A deep gorge carved out by water over centuries is now the base for the Banff-Windermere Highway (#95) to Castle Junction in Banff National Park. Like everyone else, we took the obligatory dip into Radium Hot Springs. Great sitting in the warm water, clean we hope, since it appears some people are allowed to go in without adhering to the “swimwear only” rule. In exploring more of the Park along Highway 95, we found that fencing put up by the Park to prevent ... read more

Saturday Sep 1 Gerald had told us that the drive to Radium Hot Springs via Cranbrook would be longer than we thought. Yet everyone wanted to take the longer ride for the scenery. It was worth it. In Deadwood, there was this really cool micro bakery where they made pepperoni cheese sticks and good coffee, with a barista that was quite funny with customers. There were many scenic mountain passes. We stopped in to the Desert Centre in Osoyoos, a place we had visited with our daughters in 2000. We also stopped in to a roadside stand to buy fruit and vegetables. While we had noticed there was some haze in the valleys from the wildfires, near Castlegar it was quite bad, with the fire being just meters from the road at one point. Didn’t want ... read more

Friday Aug 31 After picking up our Dodge Grand Caravan from Enterprise, we met up again with Joy and Geoff at the Bridgestone Sky Train station in Richmond and headed off to Chilliwack. We had a great visit there with the families of Diana and Ken, and Kathy and Steve and then we went off on the Coquihalla Highway towards Penticton. Speed limits of 110 and 120 km/hr here again proves how silly our 100 km/hr is on Ontario’s 400-series highways. The drive to and along Lake Okanagan was beautiful! Once in the Summerhill area, we found a couple of wineries for some tasting. We all liked the Black Sage Riesling and Cabernet Sauvignon. At the Back Door vineyard, we were drawn in by the sign that said their Rose was on sale, and found their ... read more

Thursday Aug 30 Today we were able to have a leisurely breakfast provided by our hotel before we slowly made our way to the airport to turn in our rental car. We had wanted to make a complaint about the condition of our vehicle when we picked it up, but will have to do that via email. This is the story: when we picked up the SUV at the airport, we had not noticed the large nail in one of the tires, as well as a small bulge in the side wall, because the airport garage is quite dark. We noticed this later in the day, and had to wait to replace the tire until we got to Fairbanks, at Enterprise’s cost, which took several hours out of our day. But that wasn’t really the issue. ... read more

Wednesday Aug 29 We began our 6-hour drive back to Anchorage early. Best news today: the weather cleared once we left Fairbanks! It went from a rainy 7C over the past few days to 18C and sunny. Needless to say we finally got some good looks at Mt. Denali, albeit from some 100-150 km away! We also had to make some quick pit stops along the way, not called lavatories by Geoff, but lavatrees. There are not many break areas or places to stay along the way. We drove by one very interesting place, not a five-star hotel, but we thought that Skinny Dick’s Halfway Inn was an interesting name. Too bad we did not get a photo of that one! Because the weather was so good, we decided to take a detour back into Talkeetna ... read more
