Up early today & first off was an attempt to get to Kambulgie Creek to go swimming. There was a river over the road but Debdens rule was "if I can walk it I can drive it" so he set off on foot across the water. When he was half way over Mark pointed out he had taken the bus keys with him... luckily he made it over & back. So safe to drive. The problem during the Wet though is that if there is heavy rainfall while we are over there (or extra run off from upsteam) we could end up stuck over there (like a couple were the night before!) & since some of the group had flights that evening we decided to play it safe & head to another swim site - the ... read more

We were up at a more reasonable hour today & headed off to Kakadu NP - a huge national park valued for both its natural and cultural importance. Our first stop was at the visitors centre before going over to see the Nourlangie rock art (althouh not strickly speaking art as the aborigines used these images to tell their stories, both myths and lessons). After this we went for a walk to the Gubara Springs where we went for a swim. We swam across one stream the walked a short distance through the rainforest (in bare feet & bikinis/swimmers) to a series of waterfalls. We swam in the lower plunge pool for a bit then most of us followed Debden in a series of swims & climbs up the waterfalls to a higher plunge pool where ... read more

So we set off from Darwin early in the morning with our guide Debden. The bus was a converted 4WD lorry base with driver + 6 in the cab section & what was pretty much a minibus on the back. Strange thing! Today we headed out to Lichfield NP and the first stop was to admire the termite mounds. We saw the owering Catherdral Termite mounds, the eerie Magnetic Termite mounds - which all align north-south and look like gravestones and the Tree-Piping Termite mounds (at speed from the bus) which are built up around the bases of trees - these termites then hollow out the tree which the aborigines then cut down & turned into didgeridoos. Next stop was the Florence Falls where we couldn't swim in the plunge pool as it was too strong ... read more

So on Christmas afternoon we went round to Jamie's. At Mark's request we went to the beach & Jamie brought bubbly! Then we had a tasty tasty Christmas dinner thanks to the resident chef! :D Boxing day we set off for the airport & bid goodbye to Jamie & New Zealand to return to Australia - Melbourne for a night then on up to Darwin. Unfortunately my cold got worse to the point of sickness, dizziness & a mild fever. Not the best when travelling :s... read more

Not a great nights sleep but we were up & out at a reasonable hour on Friday to catch the ferry over to Rangitoto Island, the youngest of the volanoes around Auckland at around 600 years old. It’s an interesting place, black lava makes up bulk of the island & you can witness the colonisation of this inhospitable landscape by mosses and hardy trees. This creates little patches of vegetation which slowly grow into each other & wll continue to do so until the island is covered in forest. There are also little Baches dotted around the place & the remains of a military outpost used during the world wars. The summit offers views around the bay over to Auckland, north shore, & the other islands inclusing Waiheke. We also poked around in some of the ... read more

So on Tuesday evening Mark arrived here after over 24 hours of travelling. Yay! So glad he flew from Birmingham not Heathrow! Jamie kindly gave me a lift to the airport to pick him up & we were there with a big sign & santa hats to ensure he didn't miss us! ;) Yesterday I took him for a stroll around Auckland city centre - we saw some pretty ships at the harbour & had a tasty (& rather larger than expected) lunch by the water front. I also found out that Virgin Colada (like Pina Colada but no rum) is very tasty, especially on a hot day! We then went to see Tron: Legacy at the local cinema which wasn't bad but I don't feel it really added much more than the original - although ... read more

Saturday we headed up to Ninety Mile Beach - a registered highway suitable for rugged vehicles. We probably should of listened to that last bit as Jamies poor car got stuck in soft sand after only a few metres! We did have a stroll & a paddle on the beach first though. We stuck to the roads after that & headed up to Cape Reinga where the Tasman Sea meets the Pacific Ocean & the spirits of the dead depart from this world to the next. We arrived in thick fog but luckily it was a bit clearer out by the lighthouse at the tip. After the compulory photos by the signpost we headed back down & round to Spirits Bay, or rather the far end of Spirits Bay which starts just along from the Cape. ... read more

So last Wednesday myself & Jamie headed up the motorway north from Auckland which quickly turned from a recognisable motherway into a duel carriageway into a wiggly A road (& I use that term loosely!). We had done some planning & worked out what sections of the trip we would accomplish each day.... Wednesday morning we headed from Auckland up to Leigh where we hired snorkles, fins, wetsuits, etc & went to the beach from which we swam over to Goat Island. Tip - when swimming with a camera in one hand you tend to go in circles as the camera hand is less efficient than the non-camera hand. Bloody obvious I know but I still managed to do a couple of circles before figuring it out! We then snorkled up & down the coast of ... read more

Just to keep you informed I've had a quiet few days. Much of this time has been spent indoors sorting out a couple of job applications (why is the Real World interrupting my holiday?!), Christmas presents (I have an Adventure arranged for Mark) and trying to avoid doing the former by procrastinating over the latter! Thankfully Jamie invited me round for dinner yesterday so I got to escape for a few hours to eat yummy risotto & pie and plot & scheme about our travels! So saying, I'm off travelling with Jamie tomorrow for a few days, not sure if/how much I'll get online. Hopefully the weather will improve a bit, it's been very muggy today... Only a week until Mark joins me!!! This I am looking forwards to immensely! :)... read more
