Jamie came round this morning just as I was getting fed up of job applications & we headed off to Howick Historical Village – A mixture of Maori & early European settler dwellings (mostly the latter) loosely based on the fencible village of Howick, the largest fencible settlement which together with Otahuhu, Onehunga & Panmure formed a chain to protect the young capital of Auckland from attack by either the Maori or the Frence. Fencible comes from defencible as in capable of defence, retired soldiers were offered free passage for themselves & their families, a cottage with an acre of land to become theirs after 7 years part time service. Many jumped at the chance, especially those Irish hit hard by the potato famine. In total 10 ships brought 2500 men, women & children to Auckland ... read more

Wednesday morning I left Auckland (& most of my luggage) & set off on the ferry to Waiheke Island, one of the many volcanic islands that dot the bay. Many people live on Waiheke & several commute to Auckland for work. I got a bus from the ferry terminal up to Hekerua Lodge in Oneroa (the main settlement on the island) & it turns out that whilst the dorms are packed no one is willing to cough up the few dollars extra for a share room of 3 so I had the room to myself which was kinda nice. That after noon I armed myself with a villafe map & a walks booklet & set off to explore Oneroa & its surrounds. From Little Oneroa Beach I went up the main street, cut down through Alison ... read more

Saturday morning we had planned to do another longer walk along the gorge but Julian fancied snorkling further north so we set off up the coast to Whitianga where we had a lovely cruise back down the coast to Catherdral Cove & beyond, poking the nose of the boat into several caves & coves along the way. The water was very choppy & rather cloudy due to the westerlies but the boat skimmed over the waves beautifully, we got to sit in the very front which was lovely. It was also great as we were the only people on the cruise! We also dropped anchor in the lee of an island where it was calmer & clearer & had went snorkling briefly, we saw some fish & sea urchins down there & the water wasn't tooo ... read more

Friday we headed north and east towards the Coromandel Peninsula with a stop off at Maungatautari Ecological Island reserve - a mountain that has been fenced off with a predator-proof fence & extensive predator removal inside has created a virtually predator-free reserve where native birdlife such as Kaka, Hihi & Kiwis can survive & breed. The have an observation tower & up the top we met a student studying the Kakas breeding in the reserve. We had a nice long chat about the joys of ecology fieldwork whilst the birds were being elusive! We stopped briefly in Putaruru & grabbed a couple of pies for lunch then again to go & peer at the McLaren Falls then up to Tauranga & the coast. We then headed up the coast to the Karangahake Gorge where we stayed ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Waitomo December 3rd 2010

This morning we set off soon after 9am heading for the Forgotten World Highway on route to Waitomo. It was a little grey & drizzely but still lovely to drive the twisting road through hilly farmland & a native forest gorge. This included a trip through the Republic of Whangamomona - a town that declared itself independant, as far as I can tell to prevent them having to play for a rival rigby team! Their presdidents have included Billy Gumboot the Goat and Tai the Poodle! We arrived at Waitomo in time to book in with The Legendary Black Water Rafting Company for the Black Labyrinth rafting trip at 3pm. We wet-suited up, chose our inflated inner tyres & headed into the caves. We jumped off a couple of small waterfalls (backwards holding the tyre to ... read more

Wednesday we drove up to see Mount Taranaki - a lovely volcano standing by itself on the west coast. We stayed on a comparatively expensive farmstay near Hawera. Beautiful sunshine at the farm & we since it was only around 3pm we decided to pop up to the south part of the mountain & do a short walk or two. We were slightly worried whilst driving as we couldn't see the mountain, only cloud which turned into thick, low cloud as we got closer. Being British we didn't let this stop us & good thing too for as we entered the National Park we emerged into beautiful sunshine again! Most surreal! We went for a lovely circular walk around to see the Wilkies Pools & decided not to do the second short loop as we were ... read more

We arrived in Picton mid afternoon & decided to make the most of the sunshine by heading out along Queen Charlotte Drive & walking the first section of the Queen Charotte Track. As expected lovely views of Queen Charlotte Sound were admired. Tuesday we climbed up the Tirohanga Walkway to the lookout - this was meant to take 45min according to the signs but actually took just over 20 minutes - & that was with my foot playing up still! After getting our breath back & enjoying the view down on Picton harbour we headed back down to the ferry terminal & bid farewell to South Island. I must find a way to return, I would love to find a way to live & work there. We drove from the ferry up to Paraparaumu on the ... read more

Upon leaving Nelson we decided to try some of the local wines since we were driving through some nice looking vinyards so we dropped into Vines Village & tried some Bouldevines (leaving with two bottles of a nice Pinot Noir that was 2 for $20) then down the road to Domaine Georges Michel to try some more & discovered a very palatable Pinot Noir rose! We also found some tasty venison pies for lunch before heading down the east coast to Kaikoura stopping off at Kekerengu where Julian nearly left his shirt on the beach! Lovely black sands there & I got to test my new hairband created from a find in the scraps box of the quiting shop at Vines Village! Other brief photo stops also occured along the coast which was well worth the ... read more

Thursday morning we drove down & round to Motueka where we stopped to ask about the U Fly Pitts Special flying. We were told they were fully booked tomorrow & possible the day after but Vincent had time to take us up then & there. What the hell, we decided to go for it & had a great time doing rolls & loops over Abel Tasman! We then continued up to Takaka & Golden Bay stopping off to admire the views as we came over Takaka Hill. We stayed at The Nook in Pohara with a south African guys named Hans. This was a lovely friendly place & we were sad when we had to leave. The first evening we hitched a lift up to The Grove - a limestone out crop that has been scuplted ... read more
