Se we left Makarora amid sunshine & blue skies after a brief stop at the cafe for Trouble to get his morning cup of coffee. Unfortuneately only 3 of us were interested in the Eco tour by jetboat (Ecology AND jetboat? How cool is that?!!!) & they needed 5 for the go ahead so we didn't get to do that. We stopped at Wanaka to visit Puzzling World - several rooms of illusion & a great maze which myself & Debby managed to navigate very well I think. We reached all four corner towers & found the exit with time to spare before Trouble returned with the coach. No one wanted to do the skydive at Wanaka so we headed straight through to Queenstown. Trouble took us the scenic route over the Crown Range Road, a ... read more

Left Franz Josef still shrouded in cloud on Monday morning and headed down the west coast stopping at Lake Matheson (aka mirror lake) but unfortunately Mt Cook was also hidden by clouds & there was too much breeze for the lake to act as a mirror. We then got a sneaky stop to admire Fox Glacier, smaller than Franz Josef but still impressive. This was sneaky as apparently they’re not meant to take the bus there! We then paused to admire the view at Knights Point and to walk over one of the road bridges up the Haast valley with equally awe inspiring views. The Thunder Creek Falls were also admired as were the blue pools. As soon as we left the west coast we also left the clouds behind which was good. We arrived at ... read more

So Debby, Justin & guy who I won’t name (who kept us awake with his snoring!) were up & off for their full day glacier hike before I’d had my first cup of tea of the day! Tea, chat to Mark & brunch before heading out to the landing pad for our helihike!!! After being given crampons, boots, socks, gloves & a jacket we had a brief safety briefing & clambered into the helicopter. The flight over the glacier was amazing!!!! We had a brief tour up & around before landing in the ice next to a bare rock face called the Black Hole where we met our guide Turtle & Dean whose job for the day was to scout ahead for us! Then we got 2 hours of tramping over ice & across ice cold ... read more

Was glad I left the party early as we were up & out to try our hand at bone carving on Saturday morning. Originally myself & Debby were signed up to try Jade carving but the guy who ran that was away so we had to change. The hardest part was choosing which design to make. I chose a Maori Koru - a spiral taken from the new leaves of ferns that symbolises new life, growth, strength and peace. Mostly I chose it because I liked the simple spiral pattern that looks partway between the spiral and the fish hook designs! I was given my piece of bone (shin bone from cattle obtained from a friendly butcher) & traced my pattern onto it. The lady at the workshop then cut out the inner part of the ... read more

Friday we set off down the west coast for a tiny place called Barrytown (also known affectionately as Baz Vagas!) stopping a few times on route to enjoy some sights. The first such stop was at Cape Foulwind to see the New Zealand Fur Seal colony. Unfortunately they were too far way for my camera to capture but there were several Weka next to the path including one with a chick next to the seal viewing platform. The other stop was at the Pancake Rocks - aptly named due to their odd layer formations. Here we admired the rocks & a blowhole which was just shooting spray as the tide was too low &/or the wind was the wind direction. Good views along the coast too. We stayed at the pub in town which is run ... read more

So on Thursday I joined Debby & Justin in getting a water taxi from Marahau up to Te Pukatea (via Split Apple rock). From Te Pukatea we strolled up Pitt Head & down into Anchorage Bay where we met up with Cora & Sandra for lunch (they were on the days sailing trip & our lunch breaks coincided!) I had a horse trek booked for later so I set off before them along the 11km walk back to Marahau along the coast track. It was a lovely walk with stunning forest and beaches along the way. I finally saw some fantails & silvereyes (both birds by the way) as well as more bellbirds. I got back with enough time to grab a quick cup of tea before heading off for horse riding at 5pm. So Saturday we were all set to attempt the Tongariro Crossing, reputedly the best 1 day tramp in New Zealand... We left Taupo at 6am arriving at National Park Village (imaginitive name!) before 8 in order to sign in for the guided walk & get kitted out. Seagull had told us walking shoes weren't good enough but our guides seem to disagree & pronounced all our footwear suitable for the tramp. So after a short talk & drive to the start of the walk we were handed ice axes & set off up the mountains! Beautiful views around as it was a crystal clear day with not a cloud in the sky, best day they've had for ages! For the past couple of week's they'd not been able to go up the mountain at all & ... read more

So after leaving Uncle Boy's on the Friday morning we drove to Rotorura, a very geothermically active region full of hot pools, boiling mud & the smell of rotten eggs (aka sulphur)! First stop was to go white water rafting with Kaitaki Adventures along the Kaituna river. We went through lots of rapids & over a few waterfalls, the highlight of the trip being the Grade 5 rapid or 7m waterfall! We were amazed that we came over & remained upright! It was great fun!!! I will have to try this again sometime soon :) That afternoone we headed over to Taupo were for some strange reason I'd decided to sign up to go skydiving... Myself & Debby were in the second batch to go so we had an extra half an hour of build up ... read more

Thursday I went caving on the Haggas Honking Holes adventure! Abseiling down waterfalls, crawling through holes & climbing up limstone walls. It was brilliant but so very tiring! Once we got out of the caves the walk back up the hill to the sheds nearly finished me off! There were loads of glow worms in the caves (Arachnocampa luminosa) - for those fans of nature documentaries these are the ones that have a sticky silk strand hanging down under them to catch flies. The whole experience was amazing! There are photos taken by the guides but I don’t have a CD drive to get them onto the computer... We then stopped briefly to watch an angora rabbit being shaved for it’s fur! Nearly bought some angora/merino blend yarn but decided I didn’t want to carry it ... read more

Wednesday 20th... We set off from Hahei just after 8am & drove over to the West coast passing through several places on the way including Paeroa (famous for its spring water from which they make Lemon & Paeroa!) & Hamilton where Rocky Horror Picture Show was first conceived! At the site of the Embassy theatre (where Richard O’Brien worked as a barber!) which showed the B-movie double features credited by O’Brien as the inspiration for RHS, there now stands a stature of Riff Raff! At Raglan we stopped for lunch & shopping before heading out of town to the hostel - a lovely place on the side of a mountain that supposidly looks like women lying down! A few people went off to surf school whilst the rest of us settled into our rooms & I ... read more
