Saturday Morning in Paris The day did not get off to a good start as was still suffering from some of the worst jet lag I have ever had. Jerry put together a wonderful Parisian breakfast of yogurt & strawberries, Danish (from my class) orange juice and of course cheese and croissant. I drifted back and forth between consciousness and unconsciousness while he prepared it all. After our breakfast I gathered my shopping bags and headed for the market to shop for dinner. I had planned on going to Edellerin, but I was just too tired, so I just shopped. For not speaking French I did very well, I got everything I wanted and prepared the way I wanted it. My first stop was the boucherie, where I picked up some beautiful veal scallops. After the ... read more

I woke up at 5:30 am and just could not get back to sleep, so instead doing a bit of blogging and some Payroll reports. Its Saturday morning in Paris, something I would like to get use to. Not sure why I can't sleep longer, but I guess I can always take that afternoon nap. I wanted to briefly go back to the croissant making. First, I have long known that there is simply no better croissant in the world than those made in Paris. In the states, I think the flour used is wrong and the dough is simply over worked, thus making them tougher. Also the butter, and yes there is a lot of it, is simply not high enough in fat. Croissants are not for the health concious or those on a diet ... read more

We slept well, but as is the norm, Jerry was wide awake and up and about at 5:00 am (now this is only normal when we are on vacation, at home you can’t get him out of bed before 10 if you’re lucky. I on the other hand slept soundly until 7:30, which is 90 minutes later than when I normally get up. The day started with coffee and a shower. We then headed for the market to do the shopping we did not get to yesterday. Our first stop was the Fromagerie where we purchased some camembert, brie, jamon, and butter (the best butter in the world). From there it was on to the la charcuterie for foie gras and duck pate. Our final stop on this market street Rue Ordnare was the produce market, ... read more

Day 1 After spending a few hours unpacking and getting settled into our apartment “French Kiss”, I didn’t’ name it that is just what it is called, I showered and changed and we set out to do a bit of shopping for our stay. First I should describe the apartment and area. We found the apartment through the cooking school I took classes from last year. The wife of the cooking school owner runs a vacation rental business here in Paris. The apartment we are staying is one of several that she has available. They are typically much less expensive than a hotel, however, you do not have all the perks of a hotel, it is more like you are actually living in Paris. The name of the company is Feels Like Home in Paris (www.feelslikehomeinparis.com). ... read more

Europe April 17th 2013

The day started early, very early. In truth we really didn't even go to bed the night before. I was finishing up work and we packed until 2:30 in the morning. We got about 2 hours of sleep before getting up at 4 and getting ready to go. The cab arrived at 4:30 and we were at the airport by 5 am. Our plane left at 7:52 am direct flight to Washington DC Dulles. We arrived earlier than normal anticipating longer lines and higher security do to the events at the Boston Marathon. The lines were long but they moved quickly. We ended up having a couple about 90 minutes to kill before our plane took off. The first leg was 5 hours, fortunately we both slept through most of it. Economy sucks and it isn't ... read more

Tax season has ended and one more day of work, then Paris and beyond awaits. Our flight leaves at 7:52 am, which means arrive at the airport at 5:30 am to insure we are properly body searched etc. This is just a preliminary entry to give you all and me a brief overview of our travel plans for this almost month long vacation. First we leave Portland for Paris, where we spend a full week, me in cooking classes, Jerry seeing the sights we missed last time. From Paris we take the train to Salzburg with a two hour stop over in Zurich for lunch. After 4 nights in Salzburg we are off to Vienna for three nights. The second half of our trip will take us out of our language comfort zone and out of ... read more

Europe December 23rd 2012

There almost wasn't a 2013 trip to blog about. In November I audtioned for Master Chef Season 4 and made it to the final round right before the top 100 that get on the show. Since that was not to be we now get to take another trip. We had several other trips planned for 2012, but do to my work schedule and the economy we had to cancel them. This next trip will be a return to Paris for 7 nights and then we will jump on the train and visit Salzburg, Vienna, Budapest, Prague and end in Berlin. This will be our first trip to former Soviet Block Countries and certainly a very different atomopshere and culinary treat. The week in Paris I will be taking a 5 series cooking class from the same ... read more

As I write this it is late afternoon on our last full day in France, so I am very tired and may not do this blog entry the justice it does deserve. Monday was macaroon class day, so I got up at 7 in order to have time to get ready and get to the class on time by 9 am. This is the same place that I took the morning market class when we were in Paris for my Birthday. I go to the class about 5 minutes before it started and there was one other person there waiting for the doors to open, she was from Melbourne Australia and was on her last of 4 days of cooking classes, she did the 5 class series. We were let in promptly at 9 and the ... read more

The Drive to Paris After are standard French breakfast, I went to pick up the car while Jerry finished packing. The parking structure covered about 2 square city blocks underground, with several exit options; somehow I managed to take the correct one that easily got me back to the hotel without going around the block 5 times. When I got to the hotel there was parking directly in front so that made for easy loading. It was a beautiful day for a drive to Paris. The drive was fairly quick probably less than 90 minutes. The difficult part lay ahead, driving in Paris proper and getting to our hotel. But again, with a bit of luck and much more familiarity with Paris, we drove right to the hotel. This hotel being a 4 star (yes this ... read more

Today’s blog will not have a Today’s eats section, not because we didn’t eat, but because the food truly deserves to be blogged about in its entirety. We awoke in side the walls of Mont-St. Michel to a beautiful cloud free bright sunny day. We showered, packed and headed to breakfast. I have previously blogged that breakfast in France and many European countries is not a big affair, typically croissants, fruit and coffee (hence the term continental breakfast in the United States). Today however was much more. Yes there were the croissants, half baguettes, juice, yogurt, but there was so much more. There was, as in Chateau Criessel, the ham and cheese platter, scrambled eggs and bacon, freshly made crepes to stuff with your choice of fillings, granola, cereals, bread for toast, fresh fruit and my ... read more
