Even the best itineraries don’t always go as expected. Today was to be a full day of the Hofburg Palace. This was the winter residence of the Hofburg Dynasty for over 600 years. The palace today houses everything from the royal apartments to the Spanish Riding School (you know those fancy white horses that stand on their two hind legs). We had intended on doing 6 different things today, but things change. The Ugly Truth of Travel Now for some of you this might be going too far in travel advice or should I say travel commentary, so I will be as gentle as possible. The simple truth is that travel is not always smooth and there are some things that can just put a strain on your trip. Ok, I will just say it, sometimes ... read more

Travel to Vienna We were up at 5:30 and at the train station by 7. It was an easy 10 minute walk from the hotel to the train station and we arrived in plenty of time before the train departed. Enough time to start my earlier blog today. We were again in 1st class, and I want to say a bit about that. Yes, first class train tickets cost a few more Euros and the vast majority of European’s and travelers travel in second class. Perhaps you think us snobs for choosing to travel in 1st class, but we really aren’t. Yes, we might be missing out on the travelers bond of second class and meeting other travelers, but how much do I really have in common with the 20 something backpacker? Probably not too much. ... read more

We are now on the train bound for Vienna. While we wait to leave I thought it a good time to summarize my thoughts of Salzburg. First and foremost, it is a definite must see. I might suggest winter as we both thought it would be truly beautiful here with the snow, cold and all the wunderbar soups. We are here at the start of the season so the crowds were not too bad, but July and August it’s going to be very crowded. Three days is simply not enough to do the city justice or in a pace that is sane. We saw must everything we wanted to see, but could have used at least two more days to really take in the sights and on a more leisurely pace. If you are a Mozart ... read more

Today we set out first for a small side trip outside of Salzburg. We took the number 25 bus which takes you directly to the Untersbergbahn in Grodig. In English, it takes you to the foot of Untersberg Mountain where you can board the tram to the top of the mountain. Every other day we have been in Salzburg has been picture perfect blue skies you could see for miles. The day we decide to go to the top of Untersberg it is of course overcast. This may have turned out to be a good thing, because otherwise I would know how far off the ground we were during the tram ride out. The 25 bus is actually a good bus for tourists, it also takes you directly to Hellbrunn Palace, Untersberg and the Zoo (if ... read more

Tonight was all about Mozart and has been the Highlight of the trip to Salzburg for me. The setting was Barocksaal in Stiftskeller St. Peter. This is the oldest restaurant in Europe. We were on the second floor in a beautiful room. Dinner was served in between sets of Mozart music. The room was candle lit and chandeliers from the ceiling (they of course were not candles). The music was done in three sets, the first selections from Don Giovanni, the second from The Marriage of Figaro. The final set started with A Little Night Music, you all know the song, it was made more famous than it already was by the movie Amadeus. The final selections were from the Magic Flute and it was a magical night. We had a three ... read more

We got off to a bit of a late start, but we are on vacation and schedules can be easily adapted and changed. The day planed was to be half history of Salzburg and half Mozart. It pretty much ended up being all day about Salzburg with a bit of a throwback to The Sound of Music. We had coffee in the chill lounge and mapped our route to our first stop of the day, Festung Hohensalzburg (Hohensalzburg Fortress). This is supposedly the largest completely intact restored castle in central Europe. However, what I am finding is that that Austrians seem to exaggerate a bit. To hear them tell it they have the oldest this, the biggest that and so on. So I am not sure I believe everything they say. After coffee we ... read more

Some Musing Salzburg is a postcard city, that is the old section of Salzburg is picture perfect. The outskirts are just like any other city no cleaner, no dirtier. Salzburg is also very old, it is home of the oldest restaurant in Europe, we will be there tomorrow and older than Paris. It was an independent city state until the early 19th century. It was originally ruled by Arch Bishop’s and the architecture is very mixed, in fact according to Jerry It is pretty plain and not as detail oriented as Paris, Rome, and other cities. One thing Salzburg is more than any other city I have ever been to, is all about music. It’s the birthplace of Mozart, Haydn lived here, and of course the Sound of Music is all about Salzburg. If nothing else ... read more

Our taxi arrived a little before 7; we loaded up and were off to Gare de Lyon. We had a long day of train travel ahead, but we would be comfortable. The United States really needs to start investing in high speed trains. If not just for the sheer comfort of the travel at least to reduce the carbon imprint. Trains are much better for the environment than cars or planes. There is as least one train station in every Major European city and most smaller towns are connected by regional train systems. In Paris there are at least 6 major train stations that I can think of off the top of my head. Each station has trains that go in different directions. Gare de Lyon is for trains headed to Switzerland and South Eastern France. ... read more

I woke up at 5:00 and got out of bed about 5:15, Jerry got up at 6. I took a quick shower, did the final dishes and made coffee. Once Jerry got up I changed did my final packing and then walked to the ATM for my last chance at free ATM use until we get to Berlin. It was a beautiful morning, the streets had just been washed and the sun was just coming up. The sky was perfectly clear and the city was just beginning to wake up. The brasseries were just opening, the boulangerie were putting out there first batch of fresh banquettes and croissants. It was very peaceful and pleasant. It was really one of the first times I have ever seen Paris at this time of the morning. I would have ... read more

Today is all about cooking for me; Jerry may go to design shops or may just stay home and pack as we leave for Salzburg in the morning. Jerry is feeling better today and we were both up at 7 ready to start our day. My first class this morning was bread making. Pino (from Italy) was the instructor both of the other students were doctors both women one from New Zealand the other from Durham North Carolina. The woman from New Zealand is here for 3 years with her husband who has some type of contract job. She hates it here, which I do not understand. They have a nice apartment in a good neighborhood and she just wants to go home. She even went as far as to say she hasn’t had a good ... read more
