As I write this entry we are on the train to southern Portugal to check out the Algarve (potential retirement location) but more about that later. Museo Nacional de Azuleno For our last day of part one of our visit to Lisbon we spent most of the day in the Alfama area again. It was pouring when we left the hotel room and were drenched by the time we got to the metro station. The first stop for the stay was the Museo Nacional de Azuleno. The museum showcases the tiles and tile making of Portugal. It is located in what was a convent and we had to take a metro and bus to get there. The tiles were very detailed and actually an art form all their own. Many of the houses ... read more

May 10, 2016 Lisbon Day 2 I am writing this entry a day late and doing so on purpose. If I had written it at the end of the day, which is my routine, it would have been very negative and that is not the impression I want to leave the readers with. More importantly, when I am 95 and looking back at these blogs because I forgot I ever took the trip, I don’t want to read negative things about my past travels. A few words on why it was better to blog about yesterday, today. First, we woke up very late, yes we were tired, but normally we just push through as there is so much to do. This is especially true when it is a country and city we have never ... read more

May 8 – Final Day in Madrid This day started like any other last day in a city, a quick breakfast downstairs, then back to the room to pack. We then stored our bags at the hotel and headed for a last day of Madrid. A simple agenda, one maybe two museums, lunch and a ride on the teleferico (condole). It rained all day, so it was a good thing that most of what we were doing was going to be inside. Muse Nacional Centro de Arte – Reina Sofia As the name would imply this museum is devotedly entirely to the history of Spanish art. Meaning, a lot of Picasso, Miro and Dali. The museum itself is well organized and some of the pieces are interesting, but for my part I ... read more

May 7, 2016 Much needed rest On every trip there is that day that you just need to rest. Today was our day. We have been going pretty much non-stop since we got off the plane and it finally caught up to us. So, this morning we opted out of breakfast and opted in to sleep. In fact, we didn’t get out of bed until 11:30. This did require a bit of rearranging with the schedule, but we managed to do everything we wanted. With our much needed extra sleep, we were off to our first stop, lunch in Chueca, which also is the center of gay night life, they had a bar for everyone and I mean everyone. Chueca is also a somewhat trendy shopping area. Lunch The initial plan was ... read more

Day 3 – May 6 We managed to get a bit of an earlier start, or at least we got down to breakfast sooner so the hot items were available, but the breakfast room was crowded. A muse about travelers This is my first muse or aside for this blog and it was inspired by this morning at breakfast and the last couple of days on the metro. The short version is that people are simply rude no matter what country they are from. It is not reserved for New Yorkers or US citizens, but other nationalities can just step right up to the plate and take their lumps with the rest of us. That is not to say that the people of Madrid our rude, but rather it is a commentary on those ... read more

The First Full Day May 5. We both slept very well last night, the bed is very firm, and add 2 days with no real sleep we were out like lights and slept straight to the 7:00 am alarm. We did not actually get up at 7 but allowed a little late sleeping before we started our first full day of Madrid. Breakfast is included with our room, but we nearly missed it only caught the last 30 minutes, which meant all of the hot items were gone. There was still plenty of good Spanish hams, cheeses, bread, pastries and fruits. The coffee was strong one of those Nespresso machines. This is our first trip to Europe since moving to Manhattan, we are excited because it will take 6 or more hours off our travel time as we can fly non-stop of Newark airport to all most any destination. The journey actually began a few days before we left. Since Christina, who normally has taken care of Tarragon is actually meeting us in Paris for part of this trip, we had to flow in his old cat sitter from Portland for the three weeks we will be gone. The advantage is that the cat already knows Chad, the disadvantage other than the price of the ticket is that Chad has never been to New York before and does not know the city. In addition, to him being overwhelmed by the City he has an ear infection. ... read more

New Year’s Day We woke up at around 11 and it was snowing hard again. We had no plans other than the hotel brunch at 1:30. Breakfast was included with our stay, but today we upgraded so we could participate in the New Year’s Day Brunch. It was quite the spread. I only took one picture and that was of the dessert and pastry bar. There was a very large selection ranging from vegetable gratin, to lamb tagine. There was also some nice poached salmon, risotto, gnocchi, cheeses, fruits and so much more. We pretty much stuffed ourselves. Then we went back to the room and watched movies on TV for the rest of the day and watched the snow. We were going to have poutine at a place near mount royale, but we were just ... read more

After wine-thirty in the room, we got ready for New Year’s Eve Dinner and toasting in the New Year. We have never been out of the country, or the city we live for that matter, on New Year’s so it would be a new experience. For the last two New Year’s Eve we have avoided Time Square like the plaque. We just have no desire to deal with the drunken crowds and cold weather, all to see the ball drop, then fight the crowds to go home. Sure when I was in my 20’s I wanted to do that, but once I grew up, I realized that there wasn’t any real fun in just standing around watching a ball drop, I can do that from the warms of my living room and watching Dick Clark’s Rocking ... read more

Jerry slept in a bit so I went down to breakfast by myself, while he finished getting ready. It has been snowing on and off today, which didn’t matter because we were only above ground for maybe a total of 15 minutes today. Spent most of our time in the museum, metro or underground. The only thing we did today was go to the Museum de Beaux Arts. It was an easy metro ride, but we really could have used the underground and walked there, hindsight is 20/20. The museum was in three separate building all connected by underground passages. The first section had a special exhibit that we did not see. We did get a pleasant surprise as there was no entry fee, for whatever reason all regular exhibits were free admission. The rest of ... read more
