We all met in the breakfast room at our hotel in Versailles and enjoyed their buffet. It was a combination of the traditional French breakfast of cheeses, breads, yogurt with a few hot dishes as well, such as scrambled eggs, sausages and way to salty bacon. The rain had not yet stopped in fact it was pouring, which would make long drive back to Paris in the rain. We checked out and were on the road about 10:30. The original plan was to drop the car off, then go to a wine tasting at 3 then pick up another zip car to drive to Rouen to have dinner at La Couronne (very good food and famous to us because Julia Child had her first meal in France here. Jerry and I decided that it was just ... read more

Sunday morning, I was up at 6 so I could shower, change have some breakfast and pick up our Zipcar all before 8:30. The Zipcar was about 10 blocks away so it was easy to walk to and the drive back to the hotel to pick up everyone else was just as easy, straight down the road the car was on and one turn on to Rue du Champs de Mars. We were driving to Versailles, where we would drop Christina and Jourdan off for the day, so they could visit what I consider to be the most treasured place in Europe (that we have seen so far) and that is Chateau Versailles (Pompeii is also amazing). I specifically recommended a Sunday so the fountains would be going in the afternoon (unfortunately it rained and they ... read more

We woke up to a beautiful sunny Paris day, at last the weather decided to cooperate with us. We had enough time before our first event to have breakfast together in the breakfast room. We were a bit late meeting the girls, but we still had plenty of time to make our way to the one museum on tap for the day. It was Saturday and we had a day full of things very associated with Paris, at least for me they are. We would go from Rodin, to macaroons, to the oldest restaurant in Paris. Rodin The first stop was the Rodin Museum. When we were in Pairs only the gardens were opened as the house was being renovated. This time all was open, but we started with a nice stroll through the ... read more

We originally had a very busy day planed, but again a little rest was in order so we skipped the Orangery (famous for Monet’s Waterlilies) and went to the day’s highlight. We started with breakfast in the room so we could relax and take time getting ready before we headed out. Breakfast is a traditional French breakfast, croissant, half a baguette, some cheese, yogurt fruit cup and coffee, the best part is they heat your milk so your coffee stays nice and hot. We had a fairly leisurely breakfast then got ready to meet the girls downstairs. Catacombs The highlight of the day’s itinerary was a trip to the Catacombs. We had booked a guided tour in advance so we not only avoided the lines, we did get to see some things that the ... read more

Today Jerry and I would take different paths. Jerry was off to the Cite de L’architecture du Patrimoine (Architecture museum) this is located in the Trocadero across the Seine from the Eifel Tower. I was off to the Orsay Museum with Christina & Jourdan. This is my favorite museum in Paris because of the concentration of impressionist and new-impressionist, everything from Monet to Van Gough and back again. It was a raining morning so it was good we were going to be in the Museum most of the morning. I don’t really have much to say, but have several pictures, it is hard to narrow them down, but I posted only my favorites, which could have easily been all of the Van Gough’s. The other reason I enjoy this museum is that it is pretty easy ... read more

Chateau Vincennes Now that we are in Paris, the days will be slower and not as many activities in one day. The benefit of repeating a city as often as we have Paris, it becomes a much more relaxing pace with subsequent trips, since you have already done the major sightseeing. Now it is more about doing that obscure chateau or site that is not on the top 10 or even 20 list. It is also a chance to visit your favorite restaurant, discover a few new ones and just enjoy the city of the city it is as if you lived there and not as a tourist. We slept in a bit as we only had one thing we wanted to do today, until we met up with Christina and Jourdan later in ... read more

If you know me or have read any of my prior blogs, you know we love train travel, yes at times it is difficult but 92% of the time it is a great experience. This journey is not different, other than I am currently a little warm in the TGV to Paris, that is only because I am by the window with the sun on me, the car itself is comfortable and there is always some more Rose to drink to keep me cool. After our side trip to Sintra and our soccer mania at our hotel, we made our way to the train station and waited for our overnight to Irun. Irun is just on the Spanish/French Boarder, now really want to go to Hendaye on the French side as that is where we transfer ... read more

The city of Sintra is 18 miles northwest of Lisbon. It is inland and therefore has a sub-micro climate that can be entirely different from Lisbon. When we left Lisbon, it was a bright sunny day. Upon arriving in Sintra it was a cloudy cool day, still humid, but cool. The mountain top which is where the Moorish castle and the Pena Palace are located were actually fogged in. Pedro did advise that this is usually the case, but most days the fog will burn off so it was best to do the top of the mountain last. Sintra is on the slopes of the Serra de Sintra (Sintra Mountains) and has been inhabited in one form or the other since prehistoric times. The Moors were the first to build a castle and Sintra later became ... read more

We had a full day planned, but Jerry was sleeping so soundly, I just let him sleep while I finished up yesterday’s blog. We finally got going around noon. The original plan was to go to the Museu De Berardo and the Mosteiro dos Jeromimos, then head up the hill to the Alto da Ajuda area for brunch in the Botanical gardens of Ajuda. With our late start we headed straight to brunch at Estufa Real, a converted green house in the gardens. They severe lunch every day but on Sunday’s have a brunch from noon to 4. To get there we had planned on getting on tram 18, but it does not run on Sundays, so instead we took the 760 bus which took us to the Palacio da Ajuda and then walked down to ... read more

There was only one real thing on the itinerary for today and that was the cooking class. We were thinking about a museum but after a 5-hour cooking glass with lots of wine, that didn’t happen. We started the day with a light breakfast and the hotel and headed out. The cooking class started at 10 and was in a different section of the city that we had previously been. It was a more residential area and near the Anjou stop on the green line. We found the place without any trouble. There were 6 people including us in the class, the other four were woman from London, well one was from London via Vancouver BC.
