Florence is really all about the Medici Family so much of today’s walking tour was based upon them. The Medici ruled Florence for several hundred years. Catherin di Medici was Queen of France and the mother of three French kings, the Queen of Spain and confident of Mary Queen of Scotts. They even had a pope or two in the family. This was to be a full day of museums and walking tours and it was for Jerry and Christina. When I woke up, I was simply not feeling well and felt I needed to sleep a bit more. So, Jerry and Christina headed to the Academia (where the David is) and I slept an hour or so more. I was feeling better around 11:30, so I took a shower and dressed, then headed out for ... read more

The morning started as any day we move on to the next city does, get up, have Nescafe in the room, shower and head for the train station. We got to the station a little earlier than we needed, but that just meant we had time to figure out where to stand, you don’t have a lot of time to get on and off the train when it is not originating in the city you get on. Our train this morning started in Torino and was ending in Naples. This mean we needed to get on and of quickly with all of our luggage. The train trip from Bologna to Florence was a quick 35 minutes through a lot of tunnels and some nice country side. When we arrived in Florence the station was packed, most ... read more

A few words about this series of blogs. I don’t feel that they are up to my normal standards. We have had pretty full days, and even though I have allowed time at the end of every day to do the blog entry, it just seems there has not been enough time. In reviewing the blogs, they seem to lack the depth that I normally write with, so for my readers and myself I am sorry for this. As you know I do this for a few reasons, one is so that Jerry and I will have something to look back in our golden years to remember all the places we have been the second is to hopefully inspire others to travel and experience a world outside of the US and their comfort zone. I can ... read more

Up a little earlier than most days as Christina and I had to go get the laundry. Yesterday, I was commenting on how quiet San Marco is before the crowds, well at 8:30, it is empty, just the deliveries being made on the canal the musicians of the larger restaurants lining the square setting up for the day, full of activity but empty of tourists. Picking up the laundry was fairly simple, grandma was working so the language barrier was an issued but we figured it all out. When we got back to the hotel, we finished packing and headed to the vaporetto stop to take our last trip up the grand canal to the train station. Traveling with our new luggage has been quite nice, the 360 wheels make it so much easier to get ... read more

The bed in the hotel was a bit to soft so we did not sleep as good in as past nights, but still slept from exhaustion. Breakfast was not included with this room, but they did have in room coffee, well it was Nescafe so if you call that coffee. I made a pot for us and showered. The first stop of the day was to drop of laundry. We have started doing this the last several trips so we don’t have to pack as much. We still pack a lot, but socks and underwear are cut in half because we drop of laundry half way through the trip. Since we knew exactly where we were going it did not take long to accomplish this task. The place is run by a mother daughter, so we ... read more

We woke up to a slow persistent drizzle, it was actually comforting. I got up showered, shaved and went down to breakfast. The breakfast was certainly the most elaborate on this trip so far. All kinds of fruit, breads, meats, scrambled eggs, soft boiled eggs, fresh yogurt, far too much to choose from. I ordered a cappuccino and had a nice breakfast. Christina was out shopping and Jerry was sleeping in. After breakfast, I headed out to the ATM, needed the umbrella as the drizzle was a bit heavier now. Without belaboring the point, let’s just say the ATM was a frustrating experience and I was not able to get any cash. Frustrated I walked back to the hotel. Jerry was just getting up so I did a bit of blogging (yes this is being typed ... read more

Our train for Verona left at 9:45, so we just had time to shower and have a quick cappuccino before heading off to the Metro to meet Christina. Back in the day, we would have not booked our hotels until the day before we got to the next city. That is what we did on our first three trips to Europe. I would make use of bookings.com and get some amazing deals. Sometimes we did get some not so desirable hotel but 80% of the time we did pretty well and the price was always very good. The downside was that we had to pay as we went. Now when we travel I predominantly use hotels.com and prebook everything and prepay, so we do not have to worry about credit card holds, etc. as the only ... read more

Before I start with today’s entry (again a day lag) I failed to mention one item from yesterday. When Jerry and I had finished our tour, we headed to the store to get a bit of wine for the room. As we arrived at Cavor street there was a large parade coming our way. We quickly crossed the street and then waited to see what the parade was about. Well, nothing fantastic as it turns out, just a very large anti-choice parade, mainly priests, nuns and men, a few women but the majority were clearly male, like they are the ones having the babies. Enough politics, today is about making pizza. Part of the reason for this particular trip was that Pino, whom I first met in a cooking class in Paris, has since opened his ... read more

This post is two days behind. We are currently on the train to Verona (wait until you read that entry). It was an early day, but we did manage to eat breakfast as it was uncertain that we would have time for lunch after the Vatican. All of the day’s activities were pre-booked and had very specific times so a bit more scheduled than normal. The first stop was S. Peter’s Basilica. To get to the Vatican from our hotel was pretty easy, the B metro line to the train station, transfer to the A line, the get off at Octtavia, with a final walk to St. Peter’s square. We got there around 8:15 and the square was pretty empty, compared to later in the day when it would be packed. The day was cool, sunny ... read more

(this entry is on a 1-day delay, writing it the day after, so I apologize if I switch from present to past tense). The day started with breakfast at the hotel. It was a bit larger spread than what is normally included with the room. There was the standard, cereal, rolls, meats, cheeses and yogurt, but there was also a nice frittata (room temp), scrambled eggs, bacon and boiled eggs. The big plus is freshly made cappuccino or espresso. After a quick breakfast we meet Christina at her hotel and began our day. Most of the day was dedicated to the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill, but we started at the Campo di Fiori Market. We were going to take the bus but given the parade planning there are some significant delays. We ended up walking ... read more
