On 24 May 2009 a grass roots organization arrange for a massing of protesters to demand that the NZ Transit Agency provide a pedestrian/bike lane on the Auckland Harbour Bridge - the bridge that connects the southern and northern halves of Auckland and currently the only way for pedestrians and cyclist to cross the bridge is by ferry. The protest just so happened to be the 50th anniversary of the opening of the bridge and the last time pedestrians could walk over the bridge. The organiser’s goal was to have the protestors walk across the bridge (closing the outside two lanes of the four north bound lanes). They had attempted to negotiate this with the transit agency and police. The police were willing to assist with the lane closures but the transit agency said “no way”. ... read more

ANZAC day is a Kiwi tradition dating back to WWI. When NZ was still very young during WWI she had 1M people. More than 100,000 of those went away to fight with Australian soldiers. Many of them did not come back. Nearly all the families that have been in NZ lost someone in the war and knew many more that did not come home. ANZAC day is their opportunity to remember these individuals they never met (aside from sat letters and diary entries from the front - some of which were read at the ceremony). Tradition states that you rise early 5am'ish to be at 6am service. The most lighhearted moment came at 6:45 when they were to have a flyover by one of NZ few airforce planes. It just so happened that earlier in the ... read more

The last great holiday break for new zealand until November is Easter weekend (easter friday and monday) or four full days. Since my last trip through this region I decided that I must return during autumn to see the spectacular colours of eastwoodhill arboretum. One of my biggest complaints about NZ is that we don't have proper north american falls. The colour here at this time of year is a dull green... none of the reds, oranges, yellows, pumkins, falling leaves brisk mornings and crisp evenings.... but 30 minutes drive outside Gisborne an idividual had a dream that he couldreproduce what he saw during WWI in england here in NZ on his farm.... 90 odd years later we have eastwoodhill - the southern hemisphere's large collection of norther hemisphere trees. http://www.eastwoodhill.org.nz/ I've kept the post short ... read more

It's been a while but things have been pretty full on with me in the last few months. Recap For the last 3 ½ months three mornings each week I’m up by 5am and off to a fitness club training session - but no ordinary training session - it’s boot camp. Crawl around on your stomach in all kinds of weather and dirt conditions, push-ups and sit-ups at the beach and in the water, running with 20 lb bags of sand in backpacks up and down hills etc etc etc… needless to say - wow I’ve been tired. I’ve rehearsed and auditioned for the role of Audrey II (the alien plant) in Little Shop of Horrors. That was an experience! I auditioned with the most respected community theater company in Auckland. There was a panel of ... read more

Well this post has taken much longer than expected to get up here. I'll keep the text short and leave you to the photos. Vava'u was the treat of the trip. I got to bike through jungle trails, swim with humpback whales, go diving and lounge around on the beach. This island is off the tourist track and I really enjoyed it. I've enrolled in a gym boot camp as part of a marketing stunt for my office.... it's breaking my balls. Up at 5:30 to crawl around on my stomach through muddy fields and pack around a pack filled with 20 pounds of sand. It's tough going to work and trying to focus after such an excercise routine.... I could really use some sleep. I write this just after midnight... as my sleeping patter is ... read more

This is part one of two parts documenting my recent holiday in Tonga. I'll let the photos tell the story - so you'll need to open the photo - sorry - also note that there is more than one page of photos... so to see them all you'll need to go to page two. We left auckland on Saturday afternoon for Tongatapu Island for a two night stay, howerver had no reservations for accomodation on the island. We hadn't wanted to stay so long on the main island but had no choice as on Sundays nearly everything including the airports. We arrived on Tongatapu and put our faith in the hands of a doggy looking cab driver that promised us accomodation, we just had to get in his van and take a ride into town.... so ... read more

It seems so long ago that I boarded the plane in PDX bound for Auckland, NZ. Little did I expect to be here two years later and less likely did I expect to find myself intending to stay even longer. This journey of world and self discovery and identity searching began oh so long ago… Where and when it began it’s difficult to say. Perhaps it was reading incessantly from the National Geographic and Encyclopedias during home school days. Then again it could have been that postcard from my third grade school teacher Miss Anderly who traveled to Australia and NZ the summer prior to the start of school. Maybe it was Mr. Estrada my fifth grade teacher who gave me the gift of realizing everything in this world is within our reach - if we ... read more

Delightful weekend that included a relaxed bar hoping and sky tower visit on Friday night, foosball competition (and might I add win) and then pizza making on Sunday. Marcos and I had been looking forward to the foos competition for the last few weeks. Two hours before the compeition M and I went to Foxes in the Viaduct - the only public location that I know of with a foos table and practiced. In the end it payed off... we won the 16 team compeitition. I guess going out to bars and playing foos does eventually pay off. Catch you all later. For some reason my new nickname is the Loud American - I can't imagine I'm anything like that....... read more

What a run. After eight weeks of assisting with the preparation of a community drama group show I’m one step closer to my dream of performing on the stage. At the beginning of the new year I would not have guessed that I would have come as far as I have … numerous drama classes, voice work, 48 hour film festival producer role and now this participating in a successful drama production. Who knows what’s next? During the nearly week long run of the show I’d show up directly after work to prepare the lights and set up the stage. The show would run from 7:30 to 10pm. I’d close up for the night, be home by 11pm and back up the next morning for work - a bit tiring. Sitting up in the lighting booth ... read more
