30 Dec:Further to my post earlier today (if you haven't seen it you can find it here:www.travelblog.org) here are a few videos from the first person scrambling through the temples and temple ruins. Even videos don't do these ruins justice, so you'll just need to trek to Cambodia yourself to take it all in. Angkor Wat The following video was taken about 8am in the morning at the entrance to Angkor Wat proper (you can see the steps up to the causeway about halfway through the video). The number of tourists, busses, cars, tuk tuks trebled in the two hours that I was such that it was nearly impossible to find my driver as there were hundreds of people and vehicles milling around. Don’t let the number of tourists discourage you from going, just ensure that ... read more

30 Dec: Touring Angkor, Day Two (note: There are a number of photos (84) associated with this entry. Believe me when I say this is just a fraction of the photos taken that day – e.g. you’re getting off easy, and getting only the highlights. Some have commentary immediately below the image, which will give a bit of an explanation of what you are looking at). In an attempt to avoid the crush of tourists seen yesterday, we set out for Angkor Wat proper at 7:30am. While we still found our first stop of the day full of tourists it was significantly fewer than the number we’d seen at the site the day before – should you make this journey I recommend you start your morning as early as possible so that you can enjoy the ... read more

Even videos don't do these ruins justice, so you'll just need to trek to Cambodia yourself to take it all in. In addition to my blog there is a well organised stash of information on Angkor (including maps, photos, videos, information etc...) at the UNESCO website. It would be great to get feedback on what you've seen so far of my trip. Including if you'd suggest more or less comentary, photos and or videos. Thanks ... read more

29 Dec: Touring Angkor, Day One (note: There are a number of photos (111) associated with this entry. Believe me when I say this is just a fraction of the photos taken that day – e.g. you’re getting off easy, and getting only the highlights. Most have commentary immediately below the image, which will give a bit of an explanation of what you are looking at). I'll make a seperate post with a few videos next. Flashback to winter of 1996 (Vancouver WA); I was nearing the halfway point for my senior year of high school and the second year of my college coursework. A misty drizzle hung in the chilly air as I dashed from Clark College’s carpark to the Fine Art’s building and the art history lecture hall. I didn’t yet know that the ... read more

Asia » Laos » West » Luang Prabang December 28th 2012

My original itinerary call for my travels to take me further west and north into Laos and then back around to the east. I hadn't even considered Cambodia as a destination this time around. All this changed after a chat with a friend who suggested I could go to Angkor Wat (Siem Reap, Cambodia) - for New Year's Celebrations and watch the first sunrise over the ancient city for the first time in 2013. This change in plan required me to travel back to Luang Prabang for a 1.5hr flight to Siem Reap. In LP I stayed in the same accommodation that I'd stayed at the first time through. The few hours I had in town before the flight I went exploring to the town further afield... much to my surprise I bumped into a German ... read more

Asia » Laos » West » Nong Khiaw December 25th 2012

25 to 27 Dec: Messing about in Nong Khiaw (note: a number of photos appear towards the bottom of the page). Nong Khiaw is such a restful and relaxing destination you can help but slow down and take it easy. I’ll leave my photos to capture some of what I saw and did. Highlights of this time included: 1. I completed two full books during this time. Reading either on my bungalow’s balcony or at the local eating/drinking establishment. 2. I met a number of fascinating people and had a number of interesting conversations. One particularly memorable individual was a guy named John and his wife Maggie, who live in Korea (teaching English), but was originally from Newport, Oregon. John was a character and was well known by the locals as they had spent three months ... read more

23 Dec: First night in Nong Khiaw; and 24 Dec: Tour to Muang Ngoi (note: a number of photos appear towards the bottom of the page). Upon arriving in Nong Khiaw I and a couple other women staying at the same accomodation grabbed a tuk tuk over to “Nong Kiau River Side Resort” (http://www.nongkiau.com/). This turned out to be my highlight destination on the trip for relaxing and definitely makes my all-time top 10 list for places I’d like to return to – I can’t recommend the location enough. While it’s was expensive in Laos terms it was nothing to what one would spend on a similar accommodation in NZ, AUS or USA. While checking-in I noticed that they were having an Xmas eve dinner for the following night so I booked myself a seat – ... read more

Asia » Laos » West » Nong Khiaw December 23rd 2012

23 Dec: Luang Prabang to Nong Khiaw (note: given the number of photos a number appear towards the bottom of the page below the video). Nong Khiaw (also spelled Kiaow) is a small town on the banks of the Nam Ou River and boasts a gorgeous backdrop of imposing limestone mountains, picturesque river views and genuine local colour. The town is 3-4 hours via the road or 7+ hours by boat from Luang Prabang along the Mekong and Ou River. As I had heard that boat travel was by far the more spectacular option (though more costly) I set my mind to ensuring that I got a seat on the infrequent boat runs that make the trip. I started the day early in Luang Prabang and made my way to the boat launch around 8am. The ... read more

21 to 22 Dec: Luang Prabang (note: given the number of photos a number appear towards the bottom of the page). I arrived in Luang Pragang (LP) around 2pm local time (21 Dec) and headed to my accommodation in town. After settling in and unpacking I tried to grab some sleep, but found I was too wound-up and hot to make any headway on this front so I threw on some mosquito repellent and made my way into the main part of town to do a bit of exploration and grab dinner. LP is a UNESCO World Heritage Town, situated at the confluence of two rivers, known for its temples (Wats), simple traditional wooden homes and colonial French architecture. My short 15 minute walk left me in no doubt as to why LP had been given ... read more

Asia » Taiwan » Taipei » CKS International Airport December 20th 2012

20 to 21 Dec: Auckland, Sydney, Taipei, Hanoi and finally Luang Prabang (26 hrs) All great extended holidays generally begin a few days before the actual date of departure with the ritualistic packing, repacking, regretting what hasn’t fit in the luggage, deciding to reshuffle and repack and finally resigning yourself to the fact that you have packed too much yet not enough. My trip to Laos and Cambodia began in a similar fashion. Knowing that a rolling suitcase was out of the question for two countries known for their dirt roads and rudimentary public transportation – I decided to go with a large trapping backpack and a small day bag. The day bag was simple: two different cameras (one for better quality photos and the other that would be used on excursions that would possibly end ... read more
