ABC Alive Below Crystal!! We survived the Crystal Rapids. We were wet early on in the morning. It seemed chilly, but only briefly. Floating down the Colorado, a familiar sight came into view, the bridge leading into Phantom Ranch. The temperature was sweltering, 106 in the shade and 112 in the sun. We met folks doing a “rim to rim” in one day. WOW, in this heat I can’t imagine. The post cards we mailed from the ranch are brought up to the postal service by way ... read more

Grow old with me! The best is yet to be. -Robert Browning LINKS Name TRAVEL TIPS Today, Kelly and I got engaged. I had planned this for a while, I got her out in the middle of the Colorado River, I leaned over and said, “Kel will you marry me?” Her response was, “Are you kidding?” Talk about a surprise! I assured her I had the ring in my pocket. She said, “Yes” and I put the ring on her finger, a perfect fit! The Celtic Claddagh ring has a lovely legend behind it. It was chosen with much thoughtfulness and given with a great deal of love. We shared our news and after lots of hugs and good wishes we were off for a hike in the canyons. The canyon hikes all start uphill, obviously, ... read more

Your true traveller finds boredom rather agreeable than painful. It is the symbol of his liberty - his excessive freedom. He accepts his boredom, when it comes, not merely philosophically, but almost with pleasure LINKS Colorado River & Trails Expeditions 801/261/1789 800/253-7328 TRAVEL TIPS A journey is like marriage. The certain way to be wrong is to think you control it. After a meeting Friday evening, we had our “dry-bag” packed and an ammo-container (for important items to stay dry, like camera, binoculars, etc) ready to go. Our departure time was 6AM, for a 5-hour bus ride. Some breakfast was available on the bus and off we went to our first stop, CRATE home base. Here we received our sleep bags, numbered to coincide with our ammo-can and dry bags, then on to Lee’s F ... read more

“Go confidently in the direction of your dreams! Live the life you’ve imagined” . - Thoreau LINK Outdoor Outlet We had an early start on Friday and drove about 70-80 miles north to the northern end of Zion Park. It’s a little known and little used - it’s called Kolob Canyon, and we took the scenic drive up to the top and had our breakfast. We were the only ones there. Yes, there were mosquitoes; I couldn’t believe it. It was about 6,000 feet high. We tried to catch the sun coming up over the canyons, but it was the wrong angle, but still very beautiful. We did a hike on the Taylor Creek Stream and we had about 4 stream crossings. Wow, the water was cold, you could barely stand in it long enough ... read more

"We won't know how good we were as parents until our grandchildren are raised." --John Bradshaw After a futile attempt to sleep in the van, we found a place that was serving breakfast, and had an early, early breakfast. Our next stop was an RV park for a shower and a cleanup session. Then we were off to Death Valley. When we were young, we can remember watching Death Valley Days and the good old 20-mule-team Boraxo wagon train. Those are great stories. We stopped at the National Park Service Visitor Center and we chatted with some of the rangers. One of them said it was one of the nicest days of the year that he could remember. We left Death Valley and continued to the town of Pahrump and settled in at a motel. ... read more

Journeys. Like artists, are born and not made. A thousand differing circumstances contribute to then, few of them willed or determined by the will—whatever we may think. Lawrence Durrell Today is our last day in Hawaii; we fly out this evening. So we decided to take the bus and make a circle around the island. Once outside of Honolulu, the countryside is beautiful. The north shore is outstanding and it boasts the best surfing. We stopped at Turtle Bay Resort for lunch. Wow! It is an upscale resort with many amenities. The ride took almost 4 hours, just enough time to get back to our hotel wash up and get to the airport, again. We are on our way home, weary and happily satisfied. ... read more
