Woke to a wet day. Maybe not heavy rain but some pretty persistently wet drizzle which stayed all day under a very low cloud. Packed up and ready to move on but not until we had used the super shower in our new van. Much better than going outside and across a very short bit of field to the campsite block and as we have no facilities at all at the next site we might as well get used to using only our own. Smart Arse loaded onto the Aframe and hitched to the back of the motorhome in record time. We are getting more familiar with it now. And off we went. Skirting Yarmouth and the traffic jam to get across two waterways for one last time. We will avoid Yarmouth in future. Only just ... read more

First visit of the day was to meet up with my Sister-out-law Liz who I’ve not seen for rather too many years. Had a coffee and a catchup chat and became reacquainted not only with Liz but with her puppy who is the son of my daughter’s dog. Lovely way to start the day. In fact the day, weatherwise had not started well at all. We had to get up in the night to pull the awning in as it became really windy and the sounds coming from it as it flapped in the wind were too loud to ignore. Sure enough we woke to a totally grey morning as the wind had blown lots of cloud in. Fortunately by the time we reached the beach as Happisburgh the sun was breaking through and though it ... read more

You really can’t visit Norfolk without stopping off for a trip on the Broads. Actually you can because I lived in Norfolk for 3 years at the University of East Anglia in Norwich and never visited the Broads at all in all that time. Only 20 miles from our campsite to Wroxham so went straight there. Picked up a traffic jam into the town which didn’t surprise as Norfolk is busy. Apparently far busier than normal because most people are staying in England for their holidays this year again and not jetting off to hotter more exotic places. As Europe is currently experiencing exceptionally hot temperatures feeling quite pleased really we have stayed put. We drove past the busy car park on the right before the bridge and were pleased about that later as the carpark ... read more

Time to move on and leave Suffolk for Norfolk, not many miles up the road. Back on the A12, a road which seems to have taken us everywhere in Suffolk and heading north until we came to Burgh Castle on the outskirts of Great Yarmouth. Nice little Camping and Caravanning Club CL called Home Farm. We settled in, had lunch and then went out in Smart Arse to explore. Great Yarmouth first stop except we didn’t. Stop I mean. We had been advised against visiting the ‘attractions’ along the sea front Pleasure Beach but drove along it just for a laugh. Did spot a funfair area called Joyland but even that didn’t persuade us to stop. There were lots and lots of people who were obviously enjoying the town and the promenade was heaving with people, ... read more

First task of the day was to pack up the motorhome and change campsites to another (Shrubbery Farm). Just 2.6 miles down the road as our booking arrangements at the first site had been unexpectedly altered by the arrival of a rally which wanted the whole site including our pitch ! No bother. We were recamped by 9.30 and ready to get on with our day which was to be an outing to Southwold. Visited a rather lovely traditional English seaside town. Southwold ..up the coast a bit but an easy drive in Smart Arse. Parked just as we came to the town, met up with Jenny and family and we walked in and of course went for a stroll along the pier. Just what a seaside pier should be. Little shops selling seaside tat, a ... read more

Lovely day out in Smart Arse today exploring the local area to the East of Woodbridge. We crossed the Deben river and drove through the pretty Suffolk countryside passing lots of enormous tractors on the way. Made Smart Arse look even tinier. This is an agricultural area, fields full of crops and quite frequently full of pigs, each with their own little hut. Loving the architecture. Lots of thatched cottages, pastel coloured houses and tall twisted chimneys. First stop at the Ramsholt Arms on the banks of the river and nothing else anywhere in sight except moored up boats. Perfect spot for lunch. Further down river from there until we came to the estuary at Bawdsey. From there we could see across to North Felixtowe. There is a little ferry which crosses the river but we ... read more

First activity of the day was a visit to the museum on Woodbridge waterfront, a look at the replica life sized boat being built in the Longshed and then a visit to the rather fascinating TideMill. Still operational and selling bags of flour, a lovely piece of history in a unique location. The tide started to come in while we were there and the deep mud was quite quickly covered with river water which completely changed the outlook. Back to the campsite as Bob had forgotten his sunglasses and the sun was out in all its blue skied glory, we grabbed a bit of lunch and headed out in Smart Arse to Minsmere. RSPB Nature Reserve and Wetlands of SpringWatch fame. I would have liked a map to guide us but didn't get one and did ... read more

Excellent day today exploring some of Suffolk's treasures. First to Sutton Hoo, site of two early medieval cemeteries dating from the 6th to 7th centuries. One cemetery had an undisturbed ship burial with a wealth of Anglo-saxon artefacts. The burial mounds are clear to see and there are lovely walks across the site with views down to the river below. Fortunately summer has returned so we had a glorious blue sky for our walk. There is also an exhibition explaining how the treasures were uncovered in 1938 and examples of the finds. Fascinating. We haven't seen The Dig film yet but will as soon as we get home. From Sutton Hoo our faithful little Smart Arse took us a little further north to Snape Maltings. Here on the banks of the River Alde are repurposed Victorian ... read more

A leisurely start as not expected at our next campsite, Dan's Meadow at at Martlesham, near Woodbridge until early afternoon and really not too far to travel. Ideal site to practice loading Smart Arse onto the back of Chaussy as spacious and flat. Have discovered it is very easy to unhitch, hitch up again as needed to when emptying grey waste. We have been instructed under no circumstances to reverse with the car on the back so Bob's only option when he misjudged the exact location of the waste gulley by 3 inches was to drive right round the campsite again or simply take the car off, reverse the couple of feet necessary to get the 3 inches further over and hitch back on again. Problem solved and that solution will undoubtedly be called upon again ... read more

First of all I really need to introduce you to our new motorhome vehicles. So the first photo is of Chaussy and Smart Arse. We are just getting used to both of them and so far are incredibly happy with the partnership and hoping for many happy and adventurous trips with them. Today the weather forecast was not at all good and when we woke it was to a very blustery wind with a nasty chill and promises of rain. As it happened we only caught a little rain but the sun was awol for most of the day. Summer has temporarily deserted us. Smart Arse took us for a little ride through the Cambridgeshire countryside to National Trust Wimpole House. The grounds are enormous. Just to get to the house from the carpark was quite ... read more
