Off exploring today in Smart Arse. Lots of the roads round here are so narrow that a car as small as ours is just perfect and we have noticed there are quite a lot equally small and often Smart too. We headed for the Needles which is West and went as close to the coast as the roads allowed. First stop Compton Bay where the high chalk cliffs are crumbling away and we wondered how soon the car park would crumble over the edge. We passed Freshwater Bay but didn't stop and carried on to the Needles. Have to say this was a disappointment. Commercialised like Lands End but with less natural attraction. We parked in the car park and got a £2 reduction in the parking charge as Smart Arse has a (valid) National Trust ... read more

Packed up and off at a leisurely pace as our ferry to the Isle of Wight was not until 1pm and only 30 minutes needed to get down to the ferry terminal in Portsmouth. Even so we arrived far too early but not a problem, we found ourselves on the earlier ferry and arrived in Fishbourne just before we should have left. The road to the campsite was not easy and certainly not designed for any vehicle of size. One part was so narrow that the poor van was squashed against the overgrown hedges on both sides. The man at the campsite said that we did use the best approach road ! Thank goodness we didn't meet anything as that is always a worry when you are driving with a car as trailer which cannot be ... read more

Still glorious weather today but forecast warned that it would come to an abrupt end this evening (and it did). Making the most of the lovely sunshine we set off first to the stately home only a couple of miles from the campsite .. Stansted Park. First thing we spotted was that the house was not open until 1pm and it was a good 2 hours short of that. Second was that this is really a rather commercial enterprise with garden centre, farm shop and the first gardens we came to, taken over by a very busy restaurant, tea room. We had a walk round the gardens we could access but decided not to wait for the 1pm opening and instead got on my phone to prebook us entry to somewhere else. An excellent decision as ... read more

Bob planned the day to start with a visit to Hayling Island but after chatting to someone on the campsite we crossed that off the list. They hadn't even bothered to stop... and we changed to Bosham instead. Excellent idea as Bosham was a lovely place to spend a couple of hours. Beautiful houses on the way down to the quay including a stunning thatched cottage. Discovered later that it is right beside the Millstream Hotel which we visited for a Golden Wedding party in 1996. Didn't recognize it but can be forgiven as it was quite a while ago. There are clear signs out in the shallow water at the quay to say that the tide covers the road. We walked along the road at the top of the beach to the marina area at ... read more

Lovely pretty boring drive to start the holiday but no other way to get from Staffordshire to Kent, East Sussex really so we hit the M1, M25 and headed south until we came to Crowborough. Some really slow stretches of motorway on the Ml and M25 but no specific accident holdups. Nearly came a cropper when an almost complete tyre appeared in front of us but Bob managed to steer us past it otherwise suspect it would have done something quite nasty to a beautiful motorhome with a little Smart Car behind. We were staying in Crowborough for just one night to enable us to drop in on Bob grandson Pete and family a few miles down the road. The dog just about agreed to a photo so I took one and Dani's cake was delicious. ... read more

Been quite a whirl this last couple of weeks since we got home from our Suffolk and Norfolk trip. Been busy making my Joysofglass glass ready for what will hopefully soon be the pre-Christmas rush and also trying to keep the garden in full bloom so it last through to October. Bob has been doing lots of jobs here and there, fortunately he is very handy. Don't think we have stopped for more than a minute and now we are all ready for the next trip. In normal times we would be heading down to the South of France for a month of warm sunshine but these are not normal. For the moment we are staying in the UK and taking care. We've got this far, not going to stumble just to get a bit of ... read more

Home again. An easy drive if a bit wet but nothing like as bad weather as was forecast. Delighted to find we still have a gorgeous garden (thanks to Jack next door wielder of the hosepipe) and it is full and in glorious bloom. The photos are all of the garden but taken the day after we got home as the sun came out and the sky turned fully blue (first time in more than a week). The garden is also full to the brim with bees and butterflies. Beautiful. I love my English Country Garden. Time to tidy it a little, some dead heading and maybe we will head out again in our lovely motorhome with Smart Arse in tow in a week or so. Verdict on our new motorhoming arrangements... Chausson and Smart Arse.... ... read more

Instead of going straight home we had decided to break the drive with a two night stop in St Neots, as we had done in Cambridge on the way out. However when I checked (I Love Google ☺️ ) what there was to see / do in St Neots it only really showed a rather nice River Ouse and good shops. We decided then that we would most likely only stay one night and go straight home the next day. We set off from our rather lovely small CL in Sheringham quite promptly to get us to St Neots to leave us time to go into the town. Hit the usual English traffic jams some way before Cambridge. When you get a dual carriageway which is chocker block full of traffic and then a busy roundabout ... read more

A National Trust sort of day today and two beauties on our doorstep. First stop Blickling Hall, an early 1600 mansion of beautiful proportions and balance. The lady in the car park was delighted to see us as she had a tiny weeny parking spot just waiting for a Smart Arse like ours. She said they are super busy at the moment and yesterday they had to close the carpark as it was full. This is of course because there are so many people holidaying in England because of Covid who would normally be abroad. Oddly that has nothing to do with why Bob and I are most unusually visiting Norfolk and in August. We are here because we took the opportunity to meet up with daughter Jenny and family while they were holidaying in Suffolk ... read more

Weather a bit better today and much improved by late afternoon. We headed off down to the station for the 10.40 steam train, on the North Norfolk line, to Holt. We had pre-booked online which made life easier as like everyone else we just flashed our phone at the ticket man. Found ourselves on the 10 o’clock train which was running a little late. A lovely little trip through the flat Norfolk countryside with views to the sea most of the way and just 25 minutes to Holt. We got off at Holt but had decided not to walk to the town as we knew it was quite a way so we had opted instead to return rightaway to Sheringham and come back to Holt later by car. Great idea but we did have to queue ... read more
