First activity of the day was a visit to the museum on Woodbridge waterfront, a look at the replica life sized boat being built in the Longshed and then a visit to the rather fascinating TideMill. Still operational and selling bags of flour, a lovely piece of history in a unique location. The tide started to come in while we were there and the deep mud was quite quickly covered with river water which completely changed the outlook. Back to the campsite as Bob had forgotten his sunglasses and the sun was out in all its blue skied glory, we grabbed a bit of lunch and headed out in Smart Arse to Minsmere. RSPB Nature Reserve and Wetlands of SpringWatch fame. I would have liked a map to guide us but didn't get one and did ... read more

Excellent day today exploring some of Suffolk's treasures. First to Sutton Hoo, site of two early medieval cemeteries dating from the 6th to 7th centuries. One cemetery had an undisturbed ship burial with a wealth of Anglo-saxon artefacts. The burial mounds are clear to see and there are lovely walks across the site with views down to the river below. Fortunately summer has returned so we had a glorious blue sky for our walk. There is also an exhibition explaining how the treasures were uncovered in 1938 and examples of the finds. Fascinating. We haven't seen The Dig film yet but will as soon as we get home. From Sutton Hoo our faithful little Smart Arse took us a little further north to Snape Maltings. Here on the banks of the River Alde are repurposed Victorian ... read more

A leisurely start as not expected at our next campsite, Dan's Meadow at at Martlesham, near Woodbridge until early afternoon and really not too far to travel. Ideal site to practice loading Smart Arse onto the back of Chaussy as spacious and flat. Have discovered it is very easy to unhitch, hitch up again as needed to when emptying grey waste. We have been instructed under no circumstances to reverse with the car on the back so Bob's only option when he misjudged the exact location of the waste gulley by 3 inches was to drive right round the campsite again or simply take the car off, reverse the couple of feet necessary to get the 3 inches further over and hitch back on again. Problem solved and that solution will undoubtedly be called upon again ... read more

First of all I really need to introduce you to our new motorhome vehicles. So the first photo is of Chaussy and Smart Arse. We are just getting used to both of them and so far are incredibly happy with the partnership and hoping for many happy and adventurous trips with them. Today the weather forecast was not at all good and when we woke it was to a very blustery wind with a nasty chill and promises of rain. As it happened we only caught a little rain but the sun was awol for most of the day. Summer has temporarily deserted us. Smart Arse took us for a little ride through the Cambridgeshire countryside to National Trust Wimpole House. The grounds are enormous. Just to get to the house from the carpark was quite ... read more

Day out in Cambridge today. Delayed start while we waited for the rain to stop and when we headed out it was with raincoats and an umbrella. We had decided to use the Park and Ride into the city as parking costs at £25+ prohibitive. We discovered later that the area round the main, Grand Parade carpark was gridlocked with queues of cars entering and leaving so a great decision. Instead we drove a couple of miles to the Park and Ride into the city and left Smart Arse in the carpark there. Did hesitate to take the bus as after all we have been avoiding close contact with people for last 18 months but most passengers on the bus were wearing masks. Lets hope the lady sitting across from Bob who was not was not ... read more

Goodness, can't believe how long it is since I posted a blog on here. I've just been making photographic records of our most recent holidays and trips on my Facebook page and have somehow just not found time to write anything here as well. Last blog was India 2019 and when we got back from there things changed, quite a lot, as Bob developed angina when we were there and ended up in Stoke Hospital July 19th where he had open heart surgery for a double bypass. All now very good indeed and it is hard to imagine looking and him now, restored to full health, that we had that pretty awful scare 2 years ago. It did curtail our activities though and we did no motorhoming as driving a 3.5 ton Tandy motorhome around with ... read more

Had to get up a little earlier today as taxi driver was picking us up outside reception so after a superb breakfast (The Sahara Star does a wonderful selection) we wandered outside and he appeared as if by magic. We had to head right down to the Gateway of India which we visited last time as that’s where the boats go to the island. So along the fantastic road built out into the bay on stilts to get clear of the main city traffic. As the road is 4 lanes and then goes to 2 it does have a bit of a traffic jam at either end but undoubtedly quicker than the stop, start clog of traffic by any other route. Then across to the other side of the pointy bit at the bottom of Mumbai ... read more

Last year we had just one full day in Mumbai so did the standard tourist trip down to the Gateway to India, Crawford Market and the railway station taking in Marine Drive and Bandra Worli Sealink. This year we have planned two days to allow us to see a bit further into this massive city. First on the list was Dhobi Ghat, the major laundry for the city. This is where the main hotels send their washing as it has the best reputation. We asked the hotel for a taxi to take us there and got a ridiculous quote of 6000 rupees so instead asked for an outside taxi. That one cost 600 rupees (£6). With difficulty we persuaded the taxi driver that we only wanted to be taken there and dropped off. The taxis over ... read more

A leisurely start to the day as our flight to Mumbai was not until mid-afternoon so plenty of time for breakfast and to pack. We’ve got quite good at packing having had two room moves in the 3 hotels we’ve stopped in. As a result my suitcase in particular really is a pretty dreadful mess. This not helped by a small spillage of Douwe Egberts coffee grains out of our emergency drink supply pot. Hope everything doesn’t get stained coffee coloured when I put the washing in when we get home. It is unusual to have coffee grains on one’s knickers but at least none have landed on my white suntops. As it happens we haven’t needed the hot drink supplies at all this trip as all the hotels have been generous with drink supplies but ... read more

Asia » India » Goa » Betalbatim March 2nd 2019

Today’s plan was for a little less scootering and a bit more relaxing. After breakfast, smothered in factor 15, we headed for the beach and the sea. These days in Goa are the only ones when we are fully exposed to the sun as we tend to cover up quite a lot in the cities. There are red flags along the beach but someone was in the water with a small child directly in front of the hotel so we went in there too. Then a man in high viz came along with his whistle and ordered us out of the water, said we couldn’t swim at that red flag, we must swim at the one to the left or the right as those had a lifeguard sitting underneath. So we went left and sure enough ... read more
