To Valencia We spent a good part of Christmas Day on the train traveling from Figueres to Valencia. We had not planned on visiting Valencia, however we changed our plans because of bad weather; i.e. snow, lots of snow in Madrid and flooding in Seville. The weather forecast was for sunshine along the Mediterranean coast and thus our plans changed. We arrived mid-afternoon, walked down the street and found a nice hotel ... it called itself both a hotel and a hostel. It turned out to be the nicest hotel we stayed in in Spain. The hotel employees were very friendly and helpful, the amenities such as a lovely bathroom, good breakfast, etc. were all top notch. Also it was near the train station. I thought it was pretty neat eating Valencia oranges at breakfast ... read more

Ah, to be a child again There are so many things I would like to say about this museum. First it was so much more than I expected. Second I was totally enchanted. Third I ended up sad not to be able to stay longer and buy a copy of their magnificent children's film. The first part of the museum really caught my attention and held me for about half an hour. Someone had made a slide show of hundreds of children from the 1800's to the present with their toys. The pictures were so loving and so compelling. I loved to see pictures of children the age my parents would have been at the time playing with toys that they might have owned. Some I KNEW my mom had owned like the pictures of children ... read more

We were simply amazed Girona didn't live up to our expectations, it was far above our expectations, it left our expectations in the dust! In the words of the modern phrase, "It blew us away." Shock and awe Perhaps shock is too strong a word, but we walked around the ancient streets in awe of what we saw. One section of town looks as if it has not changed in 500 years. Narrow streets, narrower alleyways, stone streets and buildings greeted us. Add a city wall, yes a city wall, where we walked and walked and walked. This is the third city wall we have been able to walk on in our travels. The first was in Xi'an, China, the second was Rothenberg in Germany and now Girona in Spain. We have seen portions of city ... read more

The Fortress of Sant Ferran is the largest fort in Europe. Built in the shape of a pentagon the total length of the wall is 5.6 kilometers. The fort was begun in 1743 to protect southern Spain from the French. It seems they did not get along with each other very well in those days. At the end of the Spanish Civil War it was the last bastion of the Republican forces. As the end of the war neared, several portions of the fort were blown up. Munitions stored in the fort were exploded to prevent them from falling into the hands of Franco's forces, the Nationalists. When we arrived in Figueres, neither of us knew that the fort existed. I noticed it on a map at the train station and asked about it at the hotel ... read more

Figueres is the birth place of Salvador Dali. Figueres, Spain is very close to the French-Spanish boarder. Its primary claim to fame is it is the birth place of the artist, Salvador Dali. If you know anything about Dali, you know that he was ... well different. He must have been a 'pistol' (American expression meaning a kid who is a lot of trouble to control. Who does the unexpected at all times.) when he was a kid in elementary and high school for he certainly was a very unusual person as an adult. The Dali Museum is located in a building that replaced the building of the former Municipal Theatre. The Theatre was built in the 19th century and was destroyed at the end of the Spanish Civil War. Here Dali had a new surrealistic ... read more

Disaster avoided --- just in time. Last night, after putting the berths down so we could sleep, the conductor collected the passports of everyone on the train. This was strange as the Czech Republic, Germany, Italy, France and Spain are all parts of the EU and are part of the Schengen states. In our travels in Northern Europe no one had asked to see our passports when we crossed boarders since 2008. We had no choice and gave him our passports. The train was about fifteen minutes from Figueres, our first stop in Spain. In fact, we were already standing by the door with our luggage to get off when Nancy said, "Did you check the passports to be sure the conductor gave you the right ones?" "No," I replied. I had meant to, had thought ... read more

It is BIG The Milan train station is big ... it is still a wind tunnel as, like Zurich, there are no doors to close out the cold air, but it is big. In the main terminal there are at least three or four floors. Most house shops and restaurants. In fact, one of the restaurants and a book store were the two places where we retreated to find warmth. Also, a note for future travelers, the rest room (WC) in the restaurant is FREE whereas the ones in public areas cost and to my mind are expensive. While eating a snack in the restaurant a young Italian soldier came in and took a seat. Because of his uniform I believe he may be a student in one of their military schools. I looked at ... read more

It is cold here! The train arrived on schedule in Zurich, our first transfer point on our way to Spain. The station has the appearance of many European train stations in large cities; the high curved cast iron supported domed ceilings covering multiple tracks that end inside the station. There is no pulling into one end of the station and the leaving through the other end. Prague's main station is different in that the tracks go through the domed portion of the station and continue on to other cities through the other end. We got off the train and were greeted by cold air ... I mean cold air. We walked quickly to get into the station where it would be warm. After all it would be warm in the station, right? Wrong. It was cold! ... read more

We decide to find warmer climes In early December with Prague being continually covered by new snow and the temperature dropping to very cold levels, we sat talking one evening about the upcoming Christmas holidays. The seminary was going to be closed for several weeks and we could do whatever we wanted to do. I knew that Spain was a destination on Nancy's 'bucket' list. In fact, she was at that time reading Tales of the Alhambra by Washington Irving. "Why don't we visit Spain?," I asked. "It will be warmer in Spain than Prague." She readily agreed. "If we go, I want to visit Granada and the Alhambra." We like to travel by train and decided that instead of flying we would go by train if I could find good connections. It took some ... read more

Saturday Morning - November A dusting of snow greeted us this morning when we woke and looked outside. The forecast had called for snow and also for snow into next week. Sunday Morning We did not get much snow today, but it did snow. Thursday Morning The 7th day in a row with snow. Yesterday afternoon and last night it SNOWED, about 5 more inches. Not only did it snow, but it turned very cold. This morning the temperature stood at about 10f. And, yes more snow is in the forecast. Early January January 7th to be exact. If you have read the above, you know snow started late in November. Well folks, it is still here. I don't recall the exact numbers but I know it snowed for 9 straight days once it began. ... read more
