Our campus seems very subdued today and quiet tonight. Our own whirlwind who blew in here last August just blew out on the wings of British Air. She is headed back to the USA much to the sorrow of every student, faculty member and visitor on campus. We had a very happy/sad party last evening to say goodbye to a most interesting young woman who came here to help teach English to our young students who are just beginning their theological education. None of us knew her before she arrived but within a day (or perhaps less) it was impossible NOT to know Jodi. With her happy smile, infectious laugh, winning personality and general joy-to-be-alive attitude plus her fantastically curly red hair it was impossible to miss this fresh breeze on campus. I don't think any ... read more

In another entry we wrote about the Carpathian Church of Saint Archangel Michael. To visit the church we had to climb Petřín Hill. The church is located about half way up the hill. It is such a pleasure to see how beautiful the city has made the park in the area of the Carpathian Church. There are overlooks built out so you can see down the hill. The entire path is made up of lovely stones set into walkways. There are pools of water, sculptures, lovely curved stairways, little waterfalls, and stairways with water in channels bubbling down the hill. This is most certainly one of the loveliest parts of the entire Petrin Hill park. Some parts are covered with fruit trees which are white with blossoms in the spring, others have attractions like the rose ... read more

We posted an entry several years ago about the Carpathian Church of St. Archangel Michael which is located on Petrin Hill. At that time the church was in rather poor condition on the outside. The church, except for the glass windows and metal bars over them, is totally made of wood with even the 'nails' being wooden. Since the building is hundreds of years old the wood was quite weathered and some of the overlapping shingles looked like they were going to come apart. We were able to peek through the windows at that time and the interior appeared to be filled with materials being stored there. We were sad to see such a treasure as this neglected and lonely. That has changed greatly. The parts of the steeple that are supposed to have paint ... read more

Of course the bus went straight heading out through the countryside and not to Stribro where we wanted to go. We had been on the train, going from Pilsen to Stribro, a small village that has changed little since medieval times. The word 'stribro' means Silver in Czech. Stribro was a frontier town, very near the German border and was a town where silver was mined. Yesterday on the train from Prague to Pilsen a man from Germany told us we should visit Stribro since it was a great example of ancient Czech/German life. After thinking it over we decided that was a good idea. It was only about a thirty minute train ride. So it would be an easy day trip ... or so we thought. As the train approached a stop we showed our ... read more

One day in 2008, a few days before we flew home, we were walking through the Wallenstein gardens here in Prague. Several booths were set up. One was from the city of Pilsen ... Plzeň in Czech. We picked up some literature. Upon reading the literature we said, "If we are ever here again we will visit Pilsen. This morning we caught the 10:05 train from Prague to Pilsen. It is less than a two hour trip. Riding on the bus takes only an hour, but we love riding trains and as we were in no hurry we opted for the train. A young Czech woman, a high school senior and a professor from Germany shared a compartment with us. The young woman was going to Pilsen to interview at an art school that she ... read more

One late evening we noticed that Old Town Square was being decorated. Since we had seen Christmas lights going up in part of the city, we had a brief thought that perhaps the Christmas Fair was going up REALLY early this year. Our next trip was in daylight and it was apparent that this was instead a celebration of the Harvest Season. The decorations had a fall or harvest look to them. We were delighted to learn that no matter what celebration goes on in Old Town Square the majority of the exhibits are of good Czech food. One of our favorite foods in the square at times like this is the chicken kabobs. Chicken, onions, sweet red pepper on a stick and grilled over a charcoal fire. It is good eating. I, Bill, have been ... read more

Cemetery At Vyšehrad ... Located at Vyšehrad beside the Peter and Paul Church the cemetery is off the beaten path for most tourists and tourist groups. But the entire Vyšehrad area is well worth a visit. The cemetery located here is where the famous and the near famous from throughout modern Czech history are buried. It is here that the famous musical composers Antonín Dvořák, Bedřich Smetana are buried and the influential Czech writer Karel Čapek are buried. We have been very impressed at how carefully, tenderly and beautifully the people of the Czech Republic care for family grave plots. Often there are plants growing there and freshly cut flowers grace the grave. It has became obvious to us that family plots are visited often and with love. The flowers are not made of plastic ... read more

We have a friend who was a CAT student in the seminary several years ago who we had lost touch with. We had not heard from her since she was a CAT. This year Nancy was given the joy of contacting the part-time female advanced degree students, asking about their concerns or areas where they need help or advice. Several days later we received an e-mail from her giving us greetings. To our surprise she informed us that she is living and working in Prague and was married in August. Her husband is a world class violin virtuoso. She invited us to attend a solo concert he was giving at the Spanish Synagogue the next week. We were very excited to think we could see her again and delighted with that invitation! Of course we ... read more

The seminary sits beside the Sarka Valley and though it is in the city of Prague it has a feeling of being in a small village. There are a few houses nearby, an extremely small Catholic church that marked the outer boundary of lands owned by a monastery centuries ago and two restaurants. One is known for serving very good food at very high prices. The other is known for very good food at moderate prices. Guess which one we frequent? Yes, the moderate one. You can see from the first photo why we feel we are in a village, if not in the woods. Beyond the restaurant, in this view, there is a large hill covered by trees. It is very steep. There are houses on top, but you cannot see them from any ... read more
