Sweets We did not know the Spanish loved sweets so much. It seemed as if every other shop was a coffee-sweet shop and they always were busy. Add to the coffee and sweets cups of thick chocolate into which they dipped deep fried bread-sticks and that should give you the picture of the love of sweets in Spain. One evening in Valencia we were in a restaurant. Three very smartly dressed ladies older than the two of us walked in and sat at a table beside us. To us it was time for our evening meal. For them it was time for a cup of thick, sweet chocolate and fried bread-sticks. We later tried a cup of the thick chocolate - minus the bread-sticks - and enjoyed it very much. You couldn't get away from sweet ... read more

A Friendly Suggestion One of the desk clerks at the hotel in Valencia, a young man, said, "You should visit my village." He was marking places on a Valencia city map that he thought we would be interested in visiting. We asked how far the village was from Valencia. He said it was about a 40 minute train ride and that there was a train about every 30 minutes. "Do you still live in Xativa?" I asked. "Yes," he replied, "I ride the train each day to work. It is nice, I can sleep." He then told us the village, like many others in Spain, is old with lots of history and that it is often called the Village of Fountains. During the time of the Roman occupation the village was famous for its silk fabrics. ... read more

Perhaps I should apologize to Robert Frost for using the first line of his poem as the title. While walking down Petrin Hill, on a path we had not walked before, it divided. As I took the photograph I thought of Frost's poem and of choices made that have made all the difference. TWO roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both Two roads diverged in a wood, and I— I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference. ... read more

The Mercado Central is somewhat like the Lexington Market in Baltimore or the Reading Market in Philadelphia only larger and more lovely. We visited early in the morning, just after it opened. Fruits, vegetables, meats and sea food ... almost any kind of food you might like can be found in the market. It became pretty obvious that the Spanish really like ham, see the photo of the hams hanging. I noticed many were from Prague. I did not know that Prague or Czech ham is so well known. There are vendor stalls at each end of the building, along each side and along the three or four aisles that run the length of the building. We had really enjoyed the open air markets in Figueres when we first arrived in Spain. Our first morning we ... read more

Always something unexpected We visited this small town that the hotel desk clerk had recommended. We did not know what to expect, only that he said it was a nice village with a long history. When we arrived it was time for lunch, maybe past time, and we were ready to eat. As we walked along we saw ahead of us a small city park. As we drew near we realized that the park had been turned into a nativity scene, not just of the manger, but of all of Bethlehem. The buildings and the figures were all full size. The plants, vegetables and animals were alive. Most of the plants were growing in the dirt of the park. Some of the fruits, etc. on the 'vendor's' stalls were artificial. Can you imagine the hours and ... read more

Walk and walk and walk We walked and walked and walked today. We wanted to see as much as possible, not just in Valencia, but everywhere we visited in Spain. Jardin Botanical Gardens This afternoon we walked to the Jardin Botanical Garden. I would guess the garden is a mile or so from our hotel ... but we had walked a number of miles before heading off to the garden. When we stopped at the ticket office to pay, the man asked if we were pensioners. When we said yes, he said the garden was free for all pensioners. Wow! Spain really is wonderful to older folk. It is an interesting garden and if you visit Valencia we recommend you visit this garden. There are a number of interesting plants. Also there are a lot of ... read more

The Cathedral of the Holy Chalice The Cathedral of the Holy Chalice is the home base for the Archbishop, the home for the diocesan community. It is the center of the liturgical life of the Diocese. The side chapel contains a chalice which is said to be the cup from which Christ served his disciples at his last supper with them. Part of the first cathedral, dating from the Roman-Visigoth era still exists as well as a 6th century crypt chapel. During the period of Muslim rule, the Moors built a mosque on this site. Then in 1262 the first stone was laid for the present Gothic style building I was deeply impressed everywhere we visited with the age of many of the buildings. I had not fully appreciated how old Spanish towns and cities are ... read more

We Just Walked In We wanted to see the inside of the cathedral one last time as well as the nativity scene. When we walked into the cathedral a mass was in progress. The cathedral was completely filled with people. All the seats were filled and there were people standing in the aisle-ways. It was Sunday, the day after Christmas and then we saw that Carlos Osoro Sierra the Archbishop of Valencia was leading the mass. We decided to stay until the mass ended. When the mass came to an end the Archbishop made his way down the center aisle to the main entrance where he stood giving each person leaving the cathedral a blessing and allowing any who wished to kiss his ring. I noticed he wiped his ring after each kiss with one ... read more

A Good Bath Always Refreshes The Arab Bath, built in the 12th century, post-dates the time when this part of Spain was ruled by the Moors, but it does give a nice ring to the name. Also the structure incorporates both Arab and Roman architecture. It was a happy accident that we found them. As we made our last walk through this ancient section of Girona we sort of stumbled on the entrance. We had read about them in a guide book and had actually forgotten we wanted to see what they were like. There is a charge to tour them, but as we found in other places in Spain they honored our Czech pensioners card and took 50% off the ticket price. Each room had a definite purpose and the temperature ranged from cool or ... read more

The day before - as perceived by Nancy It was exciting to ride on the train from Prague to Spain but it wasn't totally full of fun. The first leg from Prague to Zurich went quite well even though the sleeping car was for 6 people not the normal 4 so we were unable to sit up and talk (the headroom between bunks was too low for sitting up). But basically I went to sleep soon after we started and slept till morning. The train station in Zurich was so lovely with a Christmas market and a fantastic crystal Christmas tree that the fact that the temperature was well below freezing INSIDE the station didn't really matter much. The ride through Switzerland was really great with beautiful scenery outside the window all day long. I ... read more
