When I knew I had a chance to come to Kenya, I was excited to see an African country (I don't count Morroco as truly African)...and of course to experience close up the mythological animals of my childhood: lions, elephants, giraffes, zebras. I was eager to learn a new culture and language. What I didn't expect was to feel such a strong attraction to the country itself, one that was evident the instant I arrived in the Highlands...It is really hard to describe what attractas me so much to this part of the world....there is the physical beauty of the hills, mountains, and plains, and the gentle kindness of the people..but somehow that doesn't come near the deep connection I feel with his land... I have talked to other westerners about this...maybe it's the fact that ... read more

Today I walked with giraffes! Hartley offered to take me to Aberdare Country Club (we had cancelled a previous visit due the mud on the road) this morning for breakfast and a game walk. The club is open to the public for a fee, and there is an additional charge for the guide. It is situated on a high hill overlooking the area where Vicki and I stayed last weekend. It is fenced and there are wild herds of zebra, giraffe, antelope, and warthogs. The grounds are beautiful, as are the buildings. We ate breakfast outside and were the only guests. A peacock came down from his perch in tree to try steal our food! We could see for many miles across Kenya from our table. After we ate, Arthur, a guide, took us for a ... read more

Vicki and I were told of a guest house, out in the Aberdare area, reasonably priced, and we decided to go for Friday night. The daughter of the owner goes to the lower school so we got a ride out after school with Petra, the owner, her daughter Tessa, and other guests who had been in town. We picked up the other guests at the home of a Scottish woman who lives close to the school, in a beautiful house on a back lane. We had tea there, and then traveled to the ranch where the guest houses are located, first on the paved roads and then on very muddy and rutted back roads. The main house is amazing! As we came close, there were impala and crested cranes out in the fields, along with horses. ... read more

There is something interesting and sometimes hard about living in place where you are the "different" one. I cannot be anonymous or "invisible" once outside my room. Whether I'm out running on the road at 7:00 am or walking to the little stands down the road to buy vegetables, or in town shopping, I am not just me, going along with my life, but someone noticebly different....someone that makes others "take note". This morning I ran down to the river, about two miles along a beautiful curving road that follows the edge of the valley. I was a little later than usual, and lots of people were walking to their fields or jobs. Lots of being noticed...although many runners come from this part of world, so running isn't unusual in itself. A matatu passed me on ... read more

I have been back at Mt Kenya Academy since Friday afternoon. I spent the night in Nairobi after returning from safari. The hotel where I stayed was minimal, but clean and quiet. However the restaurant was like something out of Starwars, only with Earthlings. There were all kinds of deals going down between people from all over! Much business of all kinds... a younger European woman and an older European man were both speaking English with different accents and talking about problems all over Africa and work being done. A white man was leaving with an African woman and his arm was around her (PDA's are not normal here). An Arab man with a laptop was running figures by two Africans with cell phones....they were dealing in something that came in kilos. The next day, Simon ... read more

As part of our safari trip, we had the opportunity to visit a Maasai village and go on a nature walk with some Maasai men. We had a diifcult introduction to the people as we waited at the gate of the Park the first day and were barraged with aggressive Maasai women trying to sell us things. Since there was little or no tourism in Kenya from January through the summer due to fears related to the election violence in January, people who relied on tourists are truly desparate. We bought a few things (expensive, but I see it as a donation...) and moved on. The camp employed Maasai as greeters, and I had good conversations with one about politics, as I sat in bar one evening (drinking a Kenyan specialty made with honey, lemon, lime ... read more

The next day, we left for the Masia Mara National Park, after a delicious breakfast at the camp. I rode up front with Humphrey, our driver. We took small detour to view the Menengai Crater just outside of Nakuru. We took an unmarked dirt road and came to a breath-taking view! We were on a highway for the first hour or so, and then the roads changed to sporatic pavement and very bumpy dirt....they were rebuilding the road and this sometimes made it easier on us and at others much harder! There were few private cars once we left the highway: mostly trucks, matatus and safari vans. Ours was a poptop. Humphrey was an amazing driver, dodging potholes, goats, cows, and and the odd human....for hours on end, through dust and rain and construction.... Note: The ... read more

Good morning new world! We got the news out in the van on a sarfari trip early this am....I think I'm the only American here..but everyone is happy! Tomorrow is a national holiday in Kenya! Everywhere in the camp I hear Swahili and the word Obama.... We have been on safari for three days now....we started out at Lake Nakuru on Monday and saw many animals, including a huge rhino up very close....flamingos, a leopard (asleep in a tree and hard to see...) and hyenas among others... We then drove to the Masai Mara on Wednesday and will stay here til tomorrow. Yesterday afternoon we were able to see giraffes, lions, and elephants up close! This morning we went out at 6:30 am and saw small animals along with wildebeasts....and then (right after the news about ... read more

Once we got to Flamingo Lodge and checked in, we left on our first safari drive. The lake has no outlets, and it is very salty. The park is heavily wooded, with a large open area by the lake. Many trees blew down in a wind storm a few years ago, and you can see the devastation still. The first animal we came across was a leopard in a tree. It was hard to see, but it is rare to see them at all...and it turned out that this would be our only leopard viewing during the trip, so we were lucky! Next we went down by the lake, and got out and walked along the shore. It is safe there, if the rhinos aren't around. The flamingos and pelcans are in the thousands! As we ... read more
