Nothing like being on the top of a double decker bus, in the front seats, as a wind and rain storms hits and the bus starts blowing around a bit! That´s where we were early this morning on the way between BA and Puerto Iguazu...After a few flying branches hit the front of the bus, we almost switched seats, but by then the worst was over. The bus was good, but not as outstanding as some had described it. Maybe because we´ve taken many lux buses before, we are accustomed to them...this one had a slightly stinky WC beneath us, and since we couldn´t get the flat beds, it was hard to sleep (along with squeaky wipers, that were often drowned out by the pelting rain). We had the best seats for the views, but the ... read more

South America February 9th 2009

The restaurants here are many and wonderful....and there is a strong cafe culture too.... We fix an omelet every morning in our room, with toast and coffee. We then stop and have another coffee somewhere a few hours later. Since Italy is a great influence here, the usual is an espresso with milk. Most cafes serve water, a few cookies, or other treat with the coffee, or you pay a bit more and get the mediaslunas, or small croissants that are on every menu. The restaurants often open for dinner around 8:00 pm, but it is easy to find food at any hour. Last night we went to an Italian restaurant near our hotel, that Bill had spotted the night before. We were the first there at 8:30 pm! It was jammed at midnight the night ... read more

Yesterday we went to the race track! Bill had read that it was an beautiful old building...and fun way to spend an afternoon. Lynn was less enthusiastic.... We walked part way and then took a cab with a great driver who explained the sights along the way. We passed the private "Club des Amis" with its swimming pool and grounds, a few museums and many parks. Since it was Sunday, people were out everywhere, bike riding, walking; whole families sleeping in the shade of the giant rubber trees. The track grandstands were beautiful....we sat outside on benches near the finish line. The crowd was a mix of older men who were obviously regulars, couples, and a few tourists. Lynn started betting at the second race, and lost. She then won back all her money with her ... read more

We spent today walking from our hotel in Recoleta to the Recolta Cemetery (where Eva Peron and many other people are buried), and then the street market outside.....then on to the National Museum of Bellas Artes (free and full of works by renown Europeans)....through the "hip" Palermo neighborhood (seemed a little like the Ballard of BA) to the shopping area....and tonight, all the way back! On the way, we found bars that became clothing shops on the weekends, beautiful old homes, graffitti, cold beer, and an inexpensive dinner. We had planned to go out tonight, but everything seems to start after midnight at the earliest, so we are now in the internet cafe instead of dancing in a disco! (Later: we left the internet place at 12:40am and there were crowds in the streets and in ... read more

It´s a bright, warm, and sunny day! We are slowly recovering from jet lag, but took our first malaria pills today, and can feel the effects.... We will stay in BA til Sunday or Monday, and then take the overnight bus to Iguazu Falls (an 18 hour trip) (but there are recling seats so, in theory, we will sleep. The women here are almost all very well dressed, thin, and tanned. Even older women are dressed very fashionably, as are the little kids. Lots of clothing shops everywhere.... Yesterday we ate brunch in a cafe (probably one the more expensive ones we now think) and watched the parade of people go by. A young woman came into the cafe with black hotpants and a shirt that just covered them...long tanned legs...even the waiters (who looked pretty ... read more

After more than 30 hours of travel, we returned to the Pacific Northwest via Amsterdam. The Nairobi airport is not the best place to wait for three hours...but we made it through without resorting to buying more souvenirs...We arrived in Amsterdam at 5:30 am after an 8 hour flight. It was a gloomy, cold day in the Netherlands so we decided to stay in the airport for our seven plus hour layover....we rented a shower room which was wonderful (15 euros for 45 minutes) (well worth it especially if you share the time as we did). We also shopped (I bought some great cheese for Bill) and walked around, and around...and around. Our flight to Seattle was a little over 9 hours. As we flew up towards Greenland, I was absent-mindedly expecting to stay in daylight ... read more

Vicki and I arrived in Nairobi on Tuesday afternoon, thanks to the driver and van provided by the school. Mary, a teacher and our across-the-hall neighbor, came along to deal with text books for the school. We first went back to to the Sarit Center (http://www.saritcentre.com/about_us.htm), the shopping mall where we had bought supplies when we arrived in Nairobi, so that Mary could go to the Textbook Center, and I bought a small rolling pin and round board for making chapatis at home. Then we were dropped off at our hotel (the beautiful Fairview), where we checked and then met two friends of Vicki's who were former teachers at the school. We sat by the pool and had dinner, entertained by a very loud cat.... The next day, we relaxed by the same pool, swam, and ... read more

We leave for Nairobi today...it is another beautiful day here: sunny, warm, but with a bit of morning coolness in the fresh mountain air... I could see Mt Kenya as I ran this morning, and the farms and field were bright with dew. On the way back, I came across a group of young teens by the road....they called out to me and I went over. After the usual greetings of good morning, and handshakes, the brave one made several jokes at my expense, and then asked for 10 shillings...I showed, to more laughter, that I had nothing on me and then he asked for my "googles" (sunglasses)...or my Thatuna Rest Home hat...Again, to laughter, I explained that I have light eyes, not African eyes, and needed them in the sun... And then when I took ... read more

Vicki and I were treated to a night at Mountain Lodge, on the flanks of Mt Kenya, as a thank you from the school to Vicki for all her hard work here. We were driven up to the Lodge by an employee of the school on Saturday afternoon. We drove on a beautifully paved road, after we turned off at the village of Chaka. I t is well paved since the president has a vacation home on the road! It was strange to have no potholes to bump over on the whole trip. Mountain Lodge is about a 30 minute drive up Mt Kenya from the school. We passed through farmland, across small rivers and then through a village, where there were very primitive looking wood buildings along the road. The driver told us that these ... read more
