Africa » Kenya » Rift Valley Province » Lake Nakuru NP November 3rd 2008

I drove from the school to Nakuru by taxi. The driver is a friend of Vicki and Geoff's. We passed the Equator twice, and came down into the Rift Valley. The drive was beautiful... Nakuru is a big town and the scene of some of the election violence back in January. There I met up with the safari group, and we headed to Lake Nakuru, where we would spend the night. Once we were checked into the beautiful Flamingo Hill Camp, we went out to see the animals... The amount of wildlife is incredible...the pix will show better than words! I will put them in the next blog.... (All the pix from this part of the trip are here now)... read more

Africa » Kenya » Central Province » Laikipia Plateau November 2nd 2008

I am leaving tomorrow morning on safari! First to Lake Nakuru and then to the Masai Mara, on the edge of the Serengeti. The guide is a friend of Vicki and Geoff's, and I am joining a group Swedes he had already booked. I will end up in Nairobi on Wednesday night and then take a matatu back here on Thursday. Today we ate lunch at the airfield on the edge of the Laikipia Plateau. It is about 45 minutes from here by car. Expats gather there and the Brits have a helicopter training base. We were only a few kilometers south of the Equator! Much of the land we passed through is old lava flow from Mt Kenya. On the way we passed some of the rose plantations in the distance. The flowers are sold ... read more

Today we were feeling even more sleep deprived since both of us woke up around 3:00 am....but we managed to put in a good day's work....hopefully the jet lag wears off soon! When I got up around 6:00 there were many birds singing, and cool fresh air coming in the windows. A bright yellow bird sat on the clothes line as I made coffee. Everything is so green and lush here. On the path between the lower and upper school, there are banana trees, and huge arching trees over the road...weaver bird nests and herons! The heron squawk here too, but with a Kenyan accent. Vicki worked in the old library most of the day (the new one is almost ready, but there is no computer hook up yet). I helped a bit, putting bar codes ... read more

Africa October 31st 2008

We left Nairobi Thursday morning for Nyeri. The school sent a driver to pick us up....we had 11 boxes and bags by the time we left! We shopped for the basics here since it is a long walk from the school to town. We have been told that we will have a two bedroom apartment at the Upper School! We traveled in a school matatu (van) from Nairobi, and the driver took the more scenic route out of the capital, passing the ambassadors' residences just outside the city. I was leaning out the window, trying for a photo of these grand mansions when I realized I was pointing my camera towards the US Ambassador's home and the guard was looking very unhappy with me. I quickly put the camera down and hoped we wouldn't be pulled ... read more

We had an easy trip, considering the length of the flights (over 20 hours) and the distance and time zones crossed...We were able to stretch out on the last flight from Amsterdam to Nairobi, and got some sleep! All of our bags arrived with us, including the 85 pounds of books we are bringing for the library... Flying out of Seattle, we headed north and flew over LaConner...I could see the islands off our beach and the Olympic Mountains and San Juans further out. We then followed part of Highway 20 east, and the views were beautiful... Amsterdam was rainy and cold. It is warm here in Nairobi, but pleasant. Our hotel is near a shopping center, where we will stock up on food that is harder to get up country. We will go to the ... read more

We had a wonderful trip to Connecticut and NYC at the beginning of the month, a great road trip to Eastern Washington last week, and a long kayak paddle yesterday to Whidbey Island. We will leave for Seattle on Sunday, and I fly off to Kenya via Amsterdam, with my friend Vicki on Monday. We will be staying in Nairobi for a few days and then heading north to Nyeri, where Mt. Kenya Academy is located. http://www.mountkenyaacademy.com/index.htm Next blog will be from Kenya! ... read more

Bill and I moved to Fildago Island north of Seattle in June. I retired from teaching, and we packed up and moved everything into the 940 square foot former rental house on our property on the Swinomish Indian Reservation. We've had a beautiful summer of kayaking, friends visiting, gardening and of course, work on the house! We are both bicycling almost daily (Bill to get exercise and me to ride to the after school program in the Swinomish Village where I volunteer when I can). We will start traveling next month: first to Connecticut to see my mother and step-father, then to a reunion of college friends in Pullman WA, and then at the end of October, I will be traveling to Kenya with friend for a month to volunteer at a school north of Nairobi, ... read more

We have now arrived at our last night in Mexico... Today we took an early bus from Acapulco (at 8:00am) and arrived here around 1:00pm. Except for the loud movies on the bus, it was a comfortable trip with great views of the mountains along the new toll highway. We arrived at the South Station and hoped to find a hotel nearby. We were out of the Lonely Planet guide book's territory here. No listings of any kind for the whole area....We asked several people in the station and got mixed answers: yes, there were a few hotels, and no, there were no hotels around. Finally a very nice woman who worked for the transport system walked us about ten blocks to where we could see the hotels. We are paying about $35 for a beautiful ... read more

North America » Mexico » Guerrero » Acapulco February 21st 2008

We were well-situated to watch the eclipse on the 20th. It was wonderful to see it from Acapulco! We spent our last full day in Acapulco exploring the "new" part of the city and some of the oldest. We walked part of the main Acapulco beach, where the high rise hotels are, and Spring Break happens. The beaches were crowded in spots and open in others. There were para-sailing outfits all along the beach. We next visted the old zocalo (or town square), church, and fort, passing by the cruise ship dock. I made one last call, still trying to locate my missing bag, but no luck. Next we went up to the cliffs where the famous divers put on their show. The road itself was pretty: steep cliffs dropping to a rocky coast with waves ... read more

Well, we corrected our mistake, and took a bus back to Acapulco yesterday. We are staying at a "beach resort" in the faded grandeur of old Acapulco...we are right on a little beach, in a hotel that has seen better days, but is clean and has a pool, beach chairs (although the Italian Canadians who are here en masse snag most of them at sunrise) and a beautiful view. We are among the youngest people here.....and the least tan...and I mean tan as in leather.... We walked up the hills above the hotel this morning and saw some abandoned properties and some beautiful homes, along with nice family hotels. The salt water is clean, it appears, and everyone is friendly and helpful... We loved Taxco, but the traffic was unbearable, especially since there are no sidewalks ... read more
