Asia March 9th 2006

Hello Everyone, We made it back to Seattle safe and sound. Of course we had a different kind of weather greeting than when we arrived in Ho Chi Minh City. For this final blog we wanted to cover a few highlights, send a few more pictures and give you an overall picture of Vietnam and its people. On the plane back I asked Michelle what the highlight of the trip was for her. I wasn't surprised to learn that it was the same as mine, the boat trip through the water coconut jungle with Lai our waiter from the Hoi An Beach Resort. Just getting into an area that very few tourists see and spending quality time getting to know him and meeting his family was truly special. A few more highlights included getting to meet ... read more

And so it came to pass that the three man unit that is The Busters© was to be torn asunder. Tez was flying home to the loving bosom of his family that very morning. We breakfasted long and well and wished our fellow G1 bon voyage with a standard Buster Triple Shake©. Tez climbed into the back of 1990's carriage and with a wave, a braff and a smile he was gone. "A good man", I said to Joe. "A great man", Joe said to me. For the first time this trip I waved away all forms of transport and went for a walk. I soaked up the atmos of this wonderful little town and vowed that someday I will return, I will return to Siem Reap. 1990 picked up the two remaining Busters at 11.00am ... read more

A day of travelling took us North East to Kompong Cham via Sukon famous for its tasty Tarantulas. Sara, who had been bragging about her intention to try one, chickened out and didn't even go for a peeled frog. I gallantly decided not to show her up by refraining also. From Kompong Cham we hoped to get a boat to the town of Kratie. Unfortunately it turns out that the boat doesn't run any more so the next day we continued the rest of the way by bus. Kratie is probably most famous for being one of the last hideouts of irrawaddy ( or flat-nosed ) freshwater dolphins. They live in a very localised deep bit of the Mekong here and are very easy to see by boat or even from the shore. They look pretty ... read more

Asia » Thailand » North-West Thailand » Chiang Rai March 9th 2006

Our last stop in Thailand before heading to Laos was Chiang Rai. It was a strange kind of town and not nearly as busy as we had been expecting. I'm sure compared to Chaing Mai, the other popular destination in the north, it's a ghost town. We found a great little guesthouse just off the main drag which I'd certainly recommend if I could remember the name! We really wanted to get out of the town and try to see some of the hill tribes that the north is famous for. What better way than to hire a motorbike? This was my first time on anything more complicated than a twist'n'go in Greece but after a few jumpy gear changes we were cruising. We headed out along the river where we passed loads of ornate ... read more

Last night I had dinner and beers on a road near Khao San, but a little more chilled out. Sat on a really cool patio set on the sidewalk, with live music - a Thai guy with his acoustic guitar singing Eric Clapton and other similar type music, also in Thai. Quite relaxing and laid back. A Norwegian couple joined me and we talked the night away (only til about 9pm because I got up early today!) Actually set the alarm clock this morning to go to this market very early. All the street stalls that sell food and flowers and hotels and restaurants that have flowers go to this market early in the morning for the best deals. It was so cool - not a one tourist around, just watching the hustle and bustle of ... read more

Here are some quick photos. Internet rubbish here so not much time to write. Chaing Mai wasd a real highlight so far. We went on day trip to Doi Inthanon- national park with waterfalls and Pegodas- we think its where the king keeps either royal ashes or royal relics!!! We couldnt understand guide. And we went tpo highest peak in Thailand- but was cloudy due to farmers burning their rice fields. Next day we went to Elephant Conservation Park- helps poorly and abandoned elephants- and rode them and fed them. Was brilliant. Now in Kanchanaburi in another lovely hostel/apartment. This ones feels like proper holiday chalet but we made mistake of trying to budget and go with fan! Tomorrow we will go air con as is sweltering here. Anyway, miss you all. Keep in touch. Hello out there in blogville, So...you may be familiar with Brett Yellen, China's preeminent statue poser. But alas, I will now gain fame on a much larger scale as a recording artist. Look out Beatles, Elvis, and Rolling Stones...here I come. However, rather than the rock and roll, I will have chosen to make my name in the spoken word genre. Two weeks ago the other exchange teacher and I received word that we would be recording dialogue to help the Jingshan School students prepare for the massive national exam. Basically, and this isn't over hyping the test, this exam is the make or break moment in a Chinese student's life. Picture the SATs...but much much bigger. Needless to say that much preparation and stress goes in to this exam. However, this test is not simply ... read more

It's now midday in Fort Kochi. And it's bloody hot. And more humid than it is hot. Forget moving - you've sweated your shirt through as soon as you've thought about moving. Evenings are almost unbearable. It's as much as I can do to lift the fork to my mouth. Probably not going to get a lot of sympathy though, am I? Anyway, arrived at Fort Cochin via a fantastic budget flight from Mumbai and then an hour and a half journey by cab. More exotic indian driving - one amazing manouver on the way. A triple overtaking. Slow lorry in the left lane, being overtaken by a fairly slow car in the middle of the road, with another one using his superior 35mph top speed to overtake practically in the gutter of the other side ... read more

Things are all starting to come together for me out here in Kaohsiung. Lately I have just been relaxing and continuing to adjust until my contract starts at Junior Jungle tomorrow, March 10th. I am very anxious to start teaching regularly - and am really glad that I have had the chance to meet my students on many occasions leading up to this point. It has really helped me to be excited about starting (and less nervous) because all my kids already know my name and are familiar with me. Anyway, I thought I would post some pictures of my apartment so you can see how I am living. Faye was right - it really is a palace (esp. compared to some places I have visited!). The building is quite new, and the whole complex is ... read more
