Now here I am in Hué! Flying here was definitely the right decision (yes Boris, you where right!)- sparing me more than one day in a bus. One thing I didn’t appreciate though was the fact that I had about 4 babies sitting in my immediate vicinity- nothing’s wrong with babies, don’t get me wrong please! And I usually don’t have a problem when a baby cries- but when 4 (in one word: FOUR!!!) babies raise their high pitched voices to max noise level- that’s the point where I start to get a little unnerved. But apart from that everything went good on the flight- just one minor incident happened on our final approach into Hué. When all of a sudden I heard a weird and strange, yet familiar sound- the lady sitting behind me had ... read more

On Feb 23 evening, we took the overnight bus from Nha Trang. On Feb 24 morning, we reached Hoi An. Hoi An is a UNESCO site, an ancient city by the river. The impression is that it is like LiJiang in Yunnan, China. When the bought the open bus ticket in Saigon, the two bus tickets included one free hotel night in Hoi An. When the bus reached Hoi An and stopped at that one particular hotel, we took advantage of our free night. The hotel is very nice, and would have cost us $20 for the night. We are happy to have "saved" another $20. We rested a little and walked around town. There are many narrow streets. Many "Unesco" sites require admissions. They are mostly Chinese temples or Chinese houses. I guess they would ... read more

On Feb 27, we left Hoi An to go to Hue in the morning. We passed by some nice scenery and a tunnel of more than 6.8 km long. Somehow we didn't have a good rest the night before and snooze off most of the time during the bus trip. We walked almost a km to a guesthouse in the backpacker alley mentioned by "lonely planet". It was a cloudy day and we are not in mood to start sightseeing so we just rested for the rest of the day. On Feb 28, it rained lightly, and we followed a "walking tour" in our guidebook, but we missed most of the sites. However, the day is not wasted as we found a nice noodle place for lunch. We did not have much luck in finding good ... read more

Yep, I never imagined that it would be possible but beer is cheaper than water, which is amazing because Im no brewmaster* but I think that a vital ingredient in beer is water....beer being cheaper than water is also a sign that we are comming closer to a utopian society** or maybe that communisim is the way to go...so for all the cheap/broke alcoholics out there, read on and you too can enjoy the beaty of vietnam..... HCMC Well after our stellar Meekong riverboat cruise we booked the 7:30am mini bus to HCMC (Ho Chi Mein City or Saigon for all you Nam Vets) got up early again, got on the bus... met a german couple and shared a taxi from the bus depot to the backpacker area of town...Decided to see a bit of the ... read more

Well, its time for you all to laugh at us. We are in the Hoang Lien Mountains in North West Vietnam, only 30km from China, and thanks to the world wide web and some bbc weather reports it is colder here than back home. To make things worse.......at least you are all currently reading this in the warmth. Not for us...brass monkeys do not even come close. To add insult to injury...are we prepared with cold clothes?...nope. As I type I am wearing gloves (recently purchased), 2 hats (recently purchased) and a ski mask (see below), and I can still see my breath and not feel my fingers. Unfortunately the budget does not stretch to somewhere with heating so thank god for the several duvets each, and a wood burning stove in the dining room. This ... read more

Absolutely Beautiful! Another amazing first impression of a new country. We bussed back to Phnom Penh to catch a boat into Vietnam. The region where we are starting our time here is called the Mekong Delta. It is located West of Saigon in the South of the country. It is where most of the rice in Vietnam is produced because of flat and fertile land. Vietnam is one of the worlds largest prodicers of rice. The scenery was green hills along the Mekong which quickly turned into flat rice fields lined with fishermen and floating villages. Vietnam is a busy, busy place, to put it midly! Off the boat in Chau Doc we were confronted with a packed waterfront. So many Vietnamese lined up putting bikes, motos, groceries, and kids onto and off of boats. Meanwhile ... read more

I just wanted to say thank you for all your comments and thanks for reading. But I guess sometimes it's hard to communicate through blogs...I just wanted everyone to know that Neal was completely kidding when he made the comment about pretending to be a backpacker. It was over beers and we were both giving each other crap about one thing or another. He's a great guy...and it was really nothing. It just got me thinking about how I'm a hypocrite sometimes...and that maybe I'm got as cut out for the rough stuff as I thought I was. There was a time I was going to join the Peace Corp, and now I know I could never spend 2 years in a 3rd world or developing nation. It's just not me. I love it for awhile, ... read more

Ooooooo how lovely art thou Hoi An! A Unesco World Heritage site, Hoi An represents the Vietnam of years gone by. Despite the influx of tourism its original charm remains in tact...not a neon sign in sight! The word quaint was invented with this place in mind. There is not much to do except wander around Hoi An soaking up the atmosphere. Dilapidated french buildings line pedestrianised areas on which you can sit and while away the hours drinking coffee and eating french cakes from the pattiseries. Just what the doctor ordered. There is a small thriving riverside market where ladies sit in conical hats gossiping on street corners whilst moto's drive past laden with live produce heading to their inevitable slaughter. Vendors sell fruit on every corner and you can always find someone barbequing a ... read more

OK, so I last left you in Nam. We have done a lot since then, but it doesn't make such fascinating reading & I really want to tell you about how incredible somne recent sites have been. To summarise what we did since the last email: Spent one night in Natrang,. A beach resort in Vietnam. We were pleased we didn't spend long as it was really a big city (not huge skyrises, but many hotels etc) that happenned to be on a beach - much like I picture Surfers Paradise to be. It was dirty, there were vendors everywhere & a main road between any hotels (& jost cafes) & the beach. The waves were so big it was unswimmable. Glad we moved on to Mui Ne. This beach resort was lovely. So nice that ... read more
