I am officially cerfitied as a Open Water Diver!! Yay! I have spent the past four days with Rainbow Divers in Nha Trang. This city borders the South China Sea with a 6km strip of white sand. The water is bright blue and days are easily passed on the beach and in the clubs at night. I opted for a bit more of an active approach though and signed up for scuba school. It was myself and three others: Aussie Matthew, Canadian Madeline and Dutch Stephanie (my diving "buddy"). We were lead and taught by the hilarious yet professional Sean (English) and Christian (French) divemasters and instructors. These guys know what they are doing it and are pros at teaching it. We spend the first two days splitting our time between the classroom in the morning ... read more

And so it came to pass that the three man unit that is The Busters© was to be torn asunder. Tez was flying home to the loving bosom of his family that very morning. We breakfasted long and well and wished our fellow G1 bon voyage with a standard Buster Triple Shake©. Tez climbed into the back of 1990's carriage and with a wave, a braff and a smile he was gone. "A good man", I said to Joe. "A great man", Joe said to me. For the first time this trip I waved away all forms of transport and went for a walk. I soaked up the atmos of this wonderful little town and vowed that someday I will return, I will return to Siem Reap. 1990 picked up the two remaining Busters at 11.00am ... read more

“Themed Parties” are a way of life on the Voyager. Each segment we have the Captain’s Welcome and Farewell Parties, as well as the Seven Seas Society Party for the passengers who have sailed on Radisson before. The Welcome Party is hosted by Captain Dag in the atrium, with guests gathered on the various levels. After a few words about the upcoming voyage, he introduces his senior staff. The Farewell Party is our favorite. The Filipino crew has a number of talented individuals from housekeeping, room service, the galley, the engine room, and laundry…etc. They perform a few songs from the 50’s, the Beatles, and the last number which is “To Dream the Impossible Dream” which always gets a standing ovation because it is done with such heartfelt delivery. Then the videographer shows his DVD of ... read more

Hmmm... Still can't really get into this place. The girls feel much the same, though Eva can't seem to get enough of the markets - yes, we did the markets AGAIN today, though different ones, and yes, we bought more. Shockin', as a true Aussie would say. The area where we are staying, D Pham Ngu Lao, is tourist central, and it seems that the Saigonese hanging around these quarters are very 'spoilt' by the Vietnamese tourist boom. I have gotten everything from wolf-whistles to 'Moto, madame?', 'No, thanks', 'Marijuana, madame?'. Last night, we had dinner in close to the guesthouse, though nothing really grabbed us, probably mainly due to the seedy-looking middle-aged single white men lingering everywhere. We ended up at an Indian restaurant down an alleyway. The food was ok, the service was American-style ... read more

On March 4, we travelled from Hue to Ninh Binh, on the overnight bus (almost 10 hours). We arrived in Ninh Binh at 5:30 am. One guesthouse has a representative to greet us. We are happy to take one of their rooms for $6. The weather is wet and misty and we decided to rest for the day. On March 5, we hired two motorbikes ($7 each) to take us on tour. It was spitting rain. First, we visited Ken Ga Village, where people live right on the river and fish for farm for livelihood. We took the boat ($3, each, including boat and admission) to see the village. There were only the two of us on this boat that can accommodate twenty or more. The ride is very nice and quiet. After visiting Ken Ga ... read more

Learning to walk around the streets in the Old District of Hanoi is like learning to dance…the only catch is if you make a wrong step, or lose the tune…you’re dead on the road. When I first arrived I would stand on the sidewalk, looking across the road to where I wanted to go, for a good 10 minutes before getting up the guts to take that first step into the traffic. By the time I left, it was like instinct. I just put myself out there, the first step is always the hardest, and danced. It’s amazing how easy it is once you get the hang of it. Hanoi was good, if a little overwhelming. I discovered Bia Hoi on my second to last night there, and it caused me one of the worst hangovers ... read more

Bikes are still important in Vietnam. However, the motorbike has taken the lead as the most numerous and popular mode of transport. I think they are also a big problem in Vietnam. They are noisy, belch out much smoke, driven to fast and in the big cities have made the environment so bad I can’t imagine living there all the time. Some governments in Vietnam have banned the trucks in big cities during part of the day. Some are thinking about banning cyclos. That is the bicycle with two wheels up-front with a small seat between the wheels and the driver sits high in the back peddling his customer around. They have provided much charm to Vietnam and have been a good mode of transportation for almost a hundred years. I think the governments thinking about ... read more

Hello everyone! Sorry it took awhile to post again but the beach was just too nice. We got back into HCM City Monday morning the 6th of March. But let me take you back to Nha Trang. As I mentioned earlier we arrived last Thursday in Nha Trang. The drive from the Cam Ranh Bay Airport took about 30 minutes. The drive reminded me of the northern California or Oregon coast. Lots of curves winding above the South China Sea. You can see well out into the bay with plenty of fishing boats. The Resort shuttle took us from the airport to the ferry dock. The Vin Pearl is on an island 7 minutes and a world away from downtown Nha Trang. It is Nha Trang's newest resort and something to see. It boasts Vietnam's largest ... read more

I grew up in a generation that produced many movies about the Vietnam War…Platoon, Apocalypse Now, The Deerhunter, Born of the 4th of July, The Quiet American…maybe I just wasn’t paying attention, but these movies left questions unanswered. Exactly why we were in Vietnam, what the difference was between the Viet Cong and Viet Minh, why were the Vietnamese fighting each other, why did we extend into Laos and Cambodia, and why was the war so much more unpopular than the wars that came before? Well, I think I have the answers to a lot of these questions now…and this is my summary of how I understand it. If you already know all this…as I’m sure a lot of you do…you can skip this blog. Before WWII Vietnam was a part of French Indochina. During ... read more

It has been sooooo long since my last blog - I was actually rather grumpy for a minute when the computer just switched itself off in Can Tho after I had typed furiously for a good thirty minutes... all gone. That was the second night in a row of my typing being wiped, though the second time around, I decided to pay and leave the computer behind me. I wondered whether I was perhaps not supposed to write anymore, as my fate seemed to continuously (and literally) wipe my thoughts... Nah, I am not going to give up on it that easily. I am finding all of the typing very stimulating, and the thought of a career in Foreign Journalism is quite attractive. Hmmm. Vietnam... I haven't really written much since our arrival to this place, ... read more
