I've taken a few days to recover before writing about Vietnam, hoping I would reflect a bit and be able to write a glamorous report about how nice the people were and how much fun I had. Well I can't, three days spent in Ho Chi Minh City and I have a greater appreciation for Western civilisation more than ever. Please remember that what I write in these blogs are my own opinion based on experiences I have had - everyone has different opinions which they are entitled to, none of which are wrong. To put it bluntly, the place is a complete cesspool. Upon arrival at the airport we got our luggage and went to the airport taxi rank to get to our hotel. We were bundled into a taxi after I double checked it ... read more

Can't believe it is our last tour day. It really hadn't hit my that the tour was coming to an end till yesterday actually when they mentioned the farewell dinner this evening. Today we drove outside the city of Saigon and headed to the Chu Chi Tunnels that the Vietcong built. It is basically a complete underground city they built to escape the bombings. On the way to the tunnels we stopped by a home where they make rice paper for spring rolls. It was actually interesting to see how they make it and some in our group even tried to make some themselves. It's a very delicate process and not as easy as the woman made it look. After buying some souvenirs and trying the rice paper, we headed to the tunnels. We walked through ... read more

Today we are off to the Making Delta. The bus ride from the hotel to the delta takes about two hours. Half way through the trip our bus driver pulled over to a Vietnam rest area. The rest areas are great places! They are usually run by one family and they set out a lot of hammocks and have a small convenience store and free wifi. Apparently these rest areas are all over Vietnam and are used mostly by motor scooter riders on long trips as they need to cool the scooters down and also rest themselves. We had some local coffee and relaxed in a hammock for about 30 minutes before we were off again to the Delta. Our first stop was a village where they make coconut candy and sell locally and ship to ... read more

So another night train, actually the same one we have been catching , just further down the line, and that means all humanity has already used the beds, loos etc, and no cleaning has taken place. As Ken put it, we have done second class, third class, and now worst class! As usual we only had 5 mins to get across the tracks, and clamber up into the train, and in doing so Ken gashed his leg, but no time to do anything, just get into our allocated cabin, while having to expel the squatters! Once we set off, Kennhad to fix his leg, and I went off to tackle the loo, only I had to clamber over all the sqatters who had now laid down in the corridors, or set up camp beds in any ... read more

After having a quick breakfast at the hotel it was off to visit The Independence Palace, home of the former President of Vietnam. I was surprised when we pulled up to the gates as it ready does not look anything like a palace but more like an office building. Once inside we found out that the original palace was bombed by a rogue pilot trying to assassinate the President back in the early 60's. The President hired a well known architect at the time to design the new palace and he wanted it to have a modern feel. He also built the new palace with a very strong bunker in case it was ever bombed again. After the tour of the palace we got a brief tour of the city and then returned to the hotel ... read more

Now it is time for our group to head to our last country of the tour, Vietnam. As usual we woke up early and headed off to the airport. We were flying on Vietnam airlines and the check in process was extremely slow. but security was pretty fast. I was lucky on this flight as the person checking me in gave me an exit row seat on the aisle and no one sat in the middle seat so the flight was very comfortable. When we arrived in Vietnam we had to go through immigration which was relatively fast, but the luggage took forever to arrive. We met our guide for Vietnam, Vince and he took us on the bus straight to a local mall that had a food court of all sorts of cuisine. I laughed ... read more

We’re staying at the Beautiful Saigon Hotel in District 1, also known as the backpacker district. The usual tourist hotels are in another part of town; we’re in the area where younger (ahem) people stay, a mix of 2-3 star hotels and hostels, bars, massage parlors, cheap restaurants, and souvenir stores. We wear earplugs to sleep because of the rock music blasting out of the bars, but we knew that before we arrived – this is the fourth time we’ve stayed here and we knew our room would front the street. It’s a great place for people watching and listening. Yesterday, we could hear Chinese and German conversations in the breakfast room, and at today's breakfast, we talked with a man who was here in the Army in the late 1960s. We spend our days walking, ... read more

Mais, ... read more

So I wrote this really heartful blog about Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City). But I'm at airport and somewhere in middle I lost internet connection and I didn't notice. So I hit save and bam all gone. So this version is less:( or maybe good for you:) The history of Vietnam is very emotionally draining. Partly because this war ended about 40 ish years ago (1975) and partly because the why we went is so vague. The nutshell is that the US went into what would have been a civil war between north and south Vietnam to stop the country from becoming Communist country. This was because President Truman feared this would result in neighboring Asian countries to become communist as well. And so began a 17 year war that had staggering numbers and a far ... read more

We arrived in Saigon, and spending 2 nights in the Pullman Hotel - courtesy of Pat Sheahan who won the prize in a raffle held last year during the Long Tan celebrations. An interesting 5-star hotel in a convenient location. We were offered an upgrade to a junior suite - which we had no hesitation accepting. This upgrade included use of the "lounge" - where drinks and cookies are available throughout the day - and then a 2-hour buffet and cocktail session in the evenings. Other than using the "prize" - our main stop-over here was to visit the orphanage in Phu My - about 55ms southeast of Saigon. We had $1500 to donate to the orphanage in the form of needed daily supplies as well as cash so they could by essentials that we didn't ... read more
