Today I was up with the sun at 6am to trek into the heart of Saigon. I was forced to stay close to my digs yesterday, well within striking distance of my bathroom. The dreaded viet cong revenge hit like a tsunami yesterday morning and i was not want to venture too far from security if you know what I mean. I am not sick nor do I feel any worse for wear so thats a blessing. Am starting to feel better after two soft ice cream cones. The stomach is fine, its the lower half that gurgles and rumbles like a volcano. So off to tackle the bus system of Saigon , yahooooooo. 12 cents buys you a ride on an air conditioned bus , the trick is finding out which bus you need to ... read more

I was looking forward to today as we were heading for the notorious Chu Chi Tunnels. On our way to the tunnels we first stopped at a temple that practiced the religion Cao Dai. Here we learned a bit about Cao Dai, which is an amalgamation of nationalism, mysticism and oriental beliefs; namely Taoism, Confucianism and Buddhism. I guess if you can't actually make up your mind which religion you would like to follow then this one is a happy medium, perhaps conjured up by an indecisive Libran. We were welcomed inside as the ceremony was getting underway. Visitors stood on the balconies that surrounded the walls and quietly watched the proceedings, which amounted to lots of chanting. I was slightly confused by a statue of Mary Magdalene that I had spied at the alter, which ... read more

Today we flew to Ho Chi Minh City, which I think used to be Saigon- a much more romantic name. After dragging my now ridiculously full bag, bulked out with Hoi An purchases, through various check in's, we located our coach out side the airport and it took us to the hotel. On the way we were limited to crawling through the streets due to sheer weight of traffic, it was definitely the busiest place that I had seen yet in Vietnam. It was great fun watching the scooters and bikes that were ferrying about the weirdest collection of things you could imagine; these included one comedy spectacle of a bike that was holding the bottom part of a mannequin between his legs so the feet were sticking up into the air and the top ... read more

Hi Everybody! One thing that gets your attention in Vietnam is the traffic. There are probably 10 scooters for every car, bus, and bicycle. They all constantly blow their horns instead of hitting the brakes. At first, I was a little scared to cross the streets. Occasionally, a native girl would grab my arm and pull me across with her. We would walk in between the scooters. I got to where I could do it on my own. The city also has a force of tourist officers that are very helpful. This is the first city that Walt has allowed me to go out and shop in on my own. I got turned around a few times when I left a market by a different entrance. The tourist guys showed me the way back to my ... read more

Keskiviikkona saavuttiin Saigoniin, mika on aivan erilainen kun kuvittelin. Paljon kehittyneempi verrattuna esim. Vientieniin. Mun pitais ehka oppia nielemaan ylpeyteni ja ruveta kayttamaan karttoja. Eilen eksyin oikein huolella. Palloilin kaksi tuntia pienilla kujilla tapaamatta yhtaan lansimaalaista. Ihmiset tuijotti ja huuteli. Mutta karttaanhan en koske. Uskomattomalla sakalla loysin takasin hotellille. Ennen Saigonia vietettiin muutama yo Mui Neissa. Pieni kalastaja kyla merenrannalla. Kruisailtiin pitkin maaseutua ja saatiin paikallisista lapsista oppaita. Oikeestaan ne ei antanu paljon vaihtoehtoja. Hyppas keskelle tieta meijan eteen, ja kun pysahdyttiin kolme poikaa kiipes skootterin paalle kysymatta mitaan. Toi vahan lisahaastetta ajamiseen. En ole vielakaan tottunut siihen kuinka helppoa matkustaminen on Vietnamissa. Laosissa oppi tekemaan kaiken itse. Taalla tarvii menna ... read more

Hi Everybody! We are so happy to be in Vietnam. We arrived early last evening and saw rain for the first time since our trip started. It didn't last long but made everything steamy. It is in the 90's during the day and feels just like Alabama in the summer. The people here are wonderful. They are so friendly and helpful and always have a smile on their faces. One thing that I like about being here is that they love the U.S. dollar. They had rather have that than their Vietnamese dong. It sure makes life easier for me with the exchange rate 16,000 dong to 1 U.S. dollar. Speaking of money, everything is very inexpensive! I went to the market today and probably overpaid for merchandise that I thought was really cheap. On ... read more

Day five and still in rich, vibrant, noisy polluted Saigon !!!!! Thanks for all the comments everyone, its good to know i am being "watched" After 5 nights in my hotel for a cost of 70 canadian dollars total i have rented a "small room and bathroom in heart of Saigon. This move should cut my costs in half and give me the luxory of taking day trips out and about the country side and still keep a home base in Saigon. I looked at several rooms before deciding on one. Most were unfurnished , HOT and no AC, no private bathroom and expensive compared to the one i have rented. 2,500,000 Vietnamese dong gets me one month. (15,000 dong to the dollar) I find it easier to drop the last 3 zeros and do my ... read more

Hi All After our paradise island we headed back to HCMC alone. We went to see the 'War reminants museum' and were subjected to some brutal images. Mainly of Americans being cruel to Vietnamese during the war (v. anti- American). Can't comment on the why's or wherefors of the whole issue as not totally clued up on it yet, but soon will be as G is reading a book on America's involvement. There were even babies in jars that were deformed because of the DDT (AGENT ORANGE) that was used by the Americans to help with 'de-forrestisation''. Pretty horrific in all. However, the hardship and loss American's went through was shown pictorially in a separate section (donated by people in Kentucky!). Some powerful photos here also. THe upshot of the whole thing was Graeme managed to ... read more

Really hard to get any sleep last night. The motorbikes were going all night, music was blasting out from a bar on the corner until 4am. It was just hellishly noisy. The windows in the hotel did not really fit so it felt like we were just sleeping on the street. The breakfast was good and the receptionist managed to transfer us to another room which looks to be a lot quieter; she didn't seem too surprised when we asked to move so it must happen a lot! Did some chores and have booked ourselves on a tour to the Chu Chi tunnels tomorrow. Set off walking to see the sights of Saigon, initially passing through a local market. Bex went mad for all the sparkly stuff after being deprived for a couple of weeks (well ... read more

Thank you very much for everybody who has emailed us so far to let us know how they are getting on, anybody who hasn’t, where are you? We are a bit behind again in our updates as we are now in Laos but we will endeavor to catch up. For our descriptions of our 1 month in Vietnam we will rather alarmingly prove that history always repeats itself: we will initially concentrate on Saigon before dividing the rest of Vietnam between the North and the South. We arrived in Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) after being relieved of an exaggerated fare, we paid for a speedboat that was ‘full’ and were then down graded free of charge to a bus that took 6 hours, amusingly our guide on the bus was called ‘Like Em Yung’. HCMC ... read more
