Advertised in the hostel is a free walking tour of the city so, looking forward to it and heading off to the meeting point this morning only to find it being cancelled for today! What a shame. Instead I got chatting with a lady staying at the same hostel and we headed off for breakfast together. julienne from Amsterdam is travelling Vietnam for 3wks - going from north to south, so we could give each other a few tips. With our days planned out differently we went off separately but arranged to meet back at the hostel this evening and go out for dinner together. I walked in the direction of Benh Thanh Market firstly to have a look around - a typical market selling the usual things but housed in a beautiful old Art Deco ... read more

Today felt like a good day to head up to Saigon - or should I say Ho Chi Minh City? It actually changed its name in 1976 but some people still refer to it as Saigon. I prefer the name Saigon so for the purpose of my travel blog that's what it'll be called! Picked up at 9ish ( a much more sensible time) I was taken to the bus station - for buses heading north. Buying a ticket I headed off at 10.00 on a coach full of locals - where are all the travellers!? Stopping off half way for a wee stop a friendly Vietnamese girl made her way to the back of the bus to chat to me, as she's in her first year of learning English and they are quite keen to ... read more

After being up for 24 hours and traveling for 18, we finally made it to Vietnam late last night. This morning after breakfast we decided to explore district 1 in Ho Chi Minh City -where we are staying- in the 30 degree heat. When we left the hotel we were already shocked at how busy the streets were with people sprawled out on the pathway preparing food stalls and fruit and veges for the long, hot day ahead. What was more overwhelming was the amount of scooters and lack of road rules on the large and busy highways - traffic lights, giveway signs, and pedestrian crossings are just completely ignored which makes crossing the road quite tricky and scary the first few times! It is unbelievable how calm the Vietnamese people are when flying through an ... read more

... read more

Arrived on Saturday 18th April to a lovely 36 degrees (but feels like 41). Amazing how anyone finds anyone with the volume of people and cars, buses, etc outside the airport. It seems to work though. Good to get to our hotel though and check in. Didn't need any dinner as we had 2 meals on the plane trip. We woke up early on the Sunday and decided to visit some places that we weren't going to see on the actual tour. Started with the Reunification Palace. Picked the best day as they were celebrating the 40th anniversary since the fall of Saigon in April 1975. Best picture to date was one taken with some older soldiers in front of a replica of the exact tank that stormed the gates back then. Problem was the picture ... read more

The first trip of the year is to the busy Vietnam. I have personally persuading my friends to go there just because I want to check out their sand dunes in Mui Ne. It was not the first time for me as I've been there before during my Republic Polytechnic excursion with the Pharmacy clan. This time is not for study purpose but we were out there to have a blast! This time I traveled with the awesome girls ... which we decided to combine force and name this trip as #VietFiNaLi The total trip lasted for 6 days 5 nights. The first 2 nights were spent in Saigon, the next 3 nights in Mui Ne and enroute back to Saigon to catch our flight back to Sunny Island! Average spending for flight & accommodation/pax = ... read more

We arrived in HCMC on an all day bus, the trip from Da Lat taking a gruelling 8 hours. The first impression I had was disbelief at how modernised the city was. We were dropped off in the centre and straight away I spied a KFC, a Subway and a Burger King all on the same street. The hostel was a 30 second walk from the bus stop but we were so disorientated that we got in a taxi. He drove around the corner and we got out, feeling rather sheepish! Still tried to charge us as much as he could though the cheeky bugger. The hostel itself came highly recommended and it was easy to see why. Great rooftop bar with projector screen, pool table and plenty of seating to chill and chat to people. ... read more

February 18, 2015. We are off to Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC), formerly and still locally known as Saigon, Vietnam to celebrate Tết! Tết celebrates the arrival of spring , and so is also celebrated as New Year's. Flowers were everywhere! We woke at 4:15 for our flight to HCMC. The Kaohsiung airport was a hopping place as it was Lunar New Year. We were told to get in line immediately to go through security. Once through we had time for a free chair massage, got coffee, boarded the plane and landed 3 hours later. We got cash (8,000,000 dong) from the ATM at the airport and headed for the city bus that would take us to District 1 and close to our hotel. Once off the bus, we were distracted by the street with flowers. ... read more
