Mui Ne is basically a gorgeous little holiday town. They've built right up to the beach, leaving just enough space to walk down and watch the insane number of wind and kite surfers. We hired a kayak and attempted to paddle against the current - knackering! Loved it. Our hotel had a pool which was awesome, gonna miss how much you get for your money in Vietnam! Food still ridiculously cheap as well! And we've got used to the fact that meals never arrive at the same time.. Haha. Before heading to the capital we did a Thai cooking class.. Ended up being the only 1s on it! Went to the market to have some free samples and spent the next 2 hrs making pancakes, spring rolls, beef noodle soup, salads and sauces. Good day! On ... read more

On Friday it was time to say goodbye to Singapore. Exchange was over and it was time to begin traveling. Arrived in Saigon about 5pm and headed to the Vietnam Inn Saigon. Was close to the backpacker ghetto around Pham Ngu Lao but not right in the thick of things which means it was a bit quieter. Friday evening was just spent wandering around Pham Ngu Lao and trying to get a feel for the chaotic city. Saturday morning began with a walk to The War Remnants museum which showcases some of the equipment left behind by the Americans including tanks, air planes, guns, etc. It also has an extensive collection of photographs on display which chronicles the war. Much of it has a bit of propaganda thrown in but it's not overwhelming. Many of the ... read more

Uncle Bao, who lives in Saigon took me to this nice little place for some Chả Cá Lã Vọng. Chả Cá Lã Vọng is a Northern Vietnamese fish dish sautéed with dill and turmeric. We hopped on his scooter (Vespa-ish) and whizzed through the streets of Saigon. I rode bitch and it wasn't my first time doing so. In this part of the world, people don't really give a fuck about another person's sexual orientation. Based on my observation, Vietnam is not homophobic like most places in the U.S. Two men on a motorbike is a common thing. I wanted to test his comfort level, so I wrapped my arms around his waist intimately. I could sense he was uncomfortable, which made it funny to me. Anyways, we made our way through traffic and arrived at ... read more

There isn't much that I can say about Saigon that hasn't been said before. I stayed at a hostel for a couple of nights until I linked up with some relatives. They invited me to crash at their place and were hospitable as always. I remember the slumber party that we had years ago, where we slept on the roof top of the building they were living in at the time. Ba Ce was sweet. she treated me like I was one of her kids. It was a great opportunity for her to practice her English. She knew it, but was just shy. One day I went out to the streets and found a random white dude to help her practice her English. Who would have thought that he is an English teacher?!? After a couple ... read more

Xin Jow! Ho Chi Minh City is a vibrant, busy city. In comparison to Bangkok and Phnom Penh it seems cleaner. There doesn't seem to be as many cars and bikes parked on the pavements. Rarely we have to walk on the road to get anywhere which is nice! Ho Chi Minh is also known as Saigon. Saigon is the old name of the city and is still the official name for the city centre. The name Ho Chi Minh comes from the man, Ho Chi Minh, who was the leader of a party that fought for Independence from the French ruling. Our first day in Ho Chi Minh, we decided to have an easy day as we had a lot of super early mornings the days previous. When we finally got up, we had a ... read more

Leaving Gili we were aware that the trip was coming to an end. This was depressing enough but we weren't even looking forward to getting home because we were heading back to Ho Chi Minh and the very daunting prospect of finding work. Arrival back to Bali was on Friday so after showering (for the first time in 4 days), we had 2 weekend days to kill before getting to an embassy for visas. Now on close budget watch we decided to avoid the beer completely and invested in a cheep bottle of 'hooch' - a local brew at allegedly 80% proof but this was a waste of money since the poison was completely disgusting, smelt like vinegar and triggered vomiting reflexes when we tasted it. Without booze, we whiled away our time booking travel, preparing ... read more

Tuesday 1st October 2013 Free day today so had a very leisurely start. Headed off to Notre Dame Cathedral. Built in 1888 with materials shipped from France. Very simple interior compared to a lot of churches, a lot of the stained glass windows were destroyed in WWII and have never been replaced. To the right of the cathedral is the impressive French-style Central Post Office, built between 1886 and 1891. Painted on the walls of its grand concourse are fascinating historic maps of South Vietnam, Saigon and Cholon. A mosaic of Ho Chi Minh takes pride of place on the far wall as he does in most buildings. It is still a Post office today with a big tourist shop in the middle. It is a lovely building. It was so humid today though which kind ... read more

So I have now arrived into Ho Chi Minh city. :) It's definately not what I expected. As soon as I stood off the plane I realised. After waiting what seemed like forever for our backpacks (which I was starting to think that this was still in Dubai, or lost altogether) we went to get into our taxi. The humidity hits you straight away, it's not like your typical 'holiday' heat, well not the sort im used to in Greece ha. My first experience was the roads...... there are literally no rules, anything seems to go. If it's not taxis, cars and mopeds inter-twining, it's pedestrians just walking out in front of you just to cross the road. It was surreal, and for a few times I did think we was going to crash........ but we ... read more

First day in Ho Chi Minh. We left Perth at 1.35 am and flew to Kuala Lumpur, 2 hour stop over and then a 2 hour flight to Vietnam. Had a lovely cuppa and croissant at Harrods in KL airport, nice way to start the day. Shared a table with a man from Manila, who lives in Canada and is in Vietnam for work. Oh well we are just tourists from Perth! When we arrived at the airport in Ho Chi Minh it took quite a while to get our visa through, all these people were called before us that arrived after us. The lady at Warwick Post Office who took my Visa photos wouldn't let me smile so I looked like and angry criminal! Mark is sure that is what the hold up was. Finally ... read more

After arriving in Ho Chi Minh yesterday to gang nam style things did not quickly improve. We got in a taxi gave the driver our address and he dropped us in the middle of a street with the same name as our hotel and then tried to charge us double what was on the meter. There was a huge sign which said ONLY PAY WHAT IS ON THE METER so we stuck to our guns and he finally accepted that he was in the wrong and went leaving us with no idea where we were. Taxi men were going are you looking for hotel? It's there!! Pointing at the Sheraton which looked amazingly expensive. We wandered up and down looking for our actual hotel. We found it right on the other end of the road sort ... read more
