Day 152 (Wed 6thFeb) I got the bus to Saigon at 8am. It got me there around 2pm and dropped me 1 street from my hostel which was perfect. I walked through a little park with my gear and headed straight in, paid and got sorted. My friend Amy who I’d also travelled with in Laos had booked in yesterday so I sent her a message and we met up for a quick wander around town. We didn’t go too far then headed back to the hostel where I had a kip. In the evening we went 2 blocks away to where the main backpacker area and drinking spots are. We got tea at a small road side cafe thing. These are very popular here and I love it. We just sat there, had some food, ... read more

Day 1, having pho for breakfast and met a new buddy - Bessie from Marlyland, an English teacher at a Korean university, come for some heat and having had a week on her own, desperate for company. I said that I was going to walk to the War Remnants Museum, and despite her misgivings that it would be depressing (tough, Bessie, that is not the point.....) she came with me. It was very moving - how could it not be - made me think of everyone killed in combat, whichever side. The photos were terrible but had to be seen - children lying in rows looking like they were sleeping, and much worse! Grateful that Mike is safe and remembering Dan. Bessie and I then strolled back and met for lunch later - Indian on Bui ... read more

Hi everyone, we have settled into Ho Chi Minh City and taken in some of the sights, On Monday we started at the Reunification Palace, you only have to step in the grounds and you know this country is still under communist rule, though you wouldn’t know from the people or the streets. Entering the Reunification Palace you first come across the North Vietnamese tank that was in their words the 'Peoples Saviour' although the palace is in pristine condition, everywhere you go they mention how the defeat of America and the oppressive occupation came to end due to the actions of the North. It is a very one sided view, with little or no respect to the American soldiers, never mind any other nationality that was involved in the Vietnam war. After the Palace we ... read more

Well despite my misgivings about travelling with China Southern (and 10 minutes or so at Terminal 4 when I was in the queue for China Eastern......doh!) it was swimmingly smooth, helped no end by it being Chinese New Year, hence empty plane and a whole row to myself! Transferring in Guangzhou is easy peasy, and having read a lot of conflicting info, as well as booking a horrificly-expensive hotel for my overnight on the way back, it would seem that the airline DOES provide overnight accommodation if your stopover is more than 8hrs. The slight proviso is the statement 'IF you are accepted' - so maybe a test is needed. Better make sure I pass then! And so to the next grey area - visa on arrival. Luckily I had done everything ok, printed off the ... read more

Our final days in Cambodia were spent relaxing around the pool with a short trip into the heart of Siam Reap. The days have been a little cooler, making bearable to walk around. Our excursion into town was an eye opener, similar to the street of Bangkok, with not so many people. We headed to the markets, not just touristy stuff, we went to the local meet and food market. It was very hard to identify the meat hanging the stales as you can see from the pic's. Again the heat got to us and we headed to a local bar to watch the people go by and the fact we had seen 50c beers. After a bit more walking and few more beers we decided on lunch at a local restaurant. Absolutely delicious, and with ... read more

I am lost. I woke up this morning not remembering what day it is. Is it Tuesday? Wednesday? Thursday? Saturaday? I think it is good to be lost when you are on vacation. I think it means that you are not counting the days and just relaxing and having fun. And boy am I having fun. Yes, that is right, I am having fun. To those who helped me plan this trip, listen and listen caresfully...you were right, I was wrong, there was nothing to worry about. Athough, I think it was from all the planning that is making this trip fun! Today, I meet two comples from Australia who were also "lost". They too did not know what day it was. After hearing us asking what day it was, the tour guide from Siagon Tourist ... read more

Back again faithful readers just chilling down after hectic two days of touring around HCMC. Long long trip to Cai Dao Holy See and Cu Chi tunnels but well worth it. Temple area undoubtedly biggest yet - 22 hectares - but after a quick jog round (likely!!!)you got the hang of it. Amazing fusion of big five religions (I feel a blog fact coming on) - Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, Confucianism and Taoism. So sensible it was bound to fail and note (with apologies to all left footers) only major religion that refuses to acknowledge Cai Dao is Catholocism (check out catholic in the dictionary and you'll get the irony!) Cu Chi tunnels fascinating and made more interesting by our other tour party member (very select tours we're booked on) being an ex serving marine who was ... read more

The mission: Tet Holiday (2weeks) in Cambodia with $232 Feb 2 2013 Gate 10 waiting room. I should be relaxed and happy but sitting here I had a strange feeling of pressure and anticipation. 2 weeks of freedom ahead of me and a small backpack holding all the essentials (super compact sleeping bag, a change of clothes appropriate for temples, my kindle, camera, ipod and a few toiletries). A few deep breathes and some good tunes helps me loosen up. This is the first trip of it’s kind. No real schedule, no big luggage, no money and couch surfing. My tentative plan is to arrive in Saigon at 5pm and catch the night bus to Cambodia, Phnom Penh to be exact. From there just go where the wind takes me, with the only goals of seeing ... read more

Day one: 2 hr sleep after gruiesome 22 hr trip with stop over in Tokyo. Mob seen at customs and then getting A fellow traveler at Narita axi. I'm glad I'm with these 2 veterans, Luke and Joseph. It's great to travel with big brawny men, especially seasoned ones and in fact a hard corps native. Went to mass here at the convent this morning. Gorgeous matins mass with nunns singing. Sr/ Vu is the mother superior here and she speaks French to me because she did her graduate studies in Paris. My French is so bad but it's better than my Vietnamese. We will go to the orphanage attached to this convent next. The children and bbies here are gorgeous. You want to steal all of them. I just wish I could figure out how ... read more

Hope you all had a great christmas and new year. As I said in the last blog spent crimbo at the beach doing a great deal of nothing a fair amount of drinking and far too much eating. Shot back through Phnom Penh over night before getting the bus across the border to Saigon/Ho Chi Minh in Vietnam. Had an uneventful journey until we hit Saigon at rush hour which was a nightmare. At one point we ground to a halt with no sign of it going anywhere. The old bill were there blowing whistles and inefectually waving thier arms about but to no avail. So I abandoned the bus and got a motorbike taxi for the last few miles. It probably wasn't as safe as the bus what with the driver trying to steer with ... read more
