So we have decided to head to Da Lat so are setting off tomorrow. I have loved Ho Chi Minh City. Lots to see and do (tourism) but that also means that you have to hold onto your bag tighter. Yestereday we visited the Cu Chi Tunnels. Pretty clever, the underground system of tunnels that they dug out. I managed to climb in the tunnel entrance without getting stuck, much to my relief. Some guy thought i was trying to buy viagra today (god knows what they must think of the europeans) but to be fair i see many old 'western men' with a younger wife/gf. Im sure its all true love but you cant help but be a bit cynical.... read more

Leaving Saigon with my new bike I was a little nervous but mostly excited about what was to come. Making my way through the crazy traffic of bikes, cars, trucks and buses there seemed to be no rules other then size matters!! Surviving the day I was roughly 150kms out of Saigon with around 150kms left to Mui Ne when the sun started to go down at 5:30pm. Stopping for a coffee on the side of the road I asked the girl where a hotel was with my trusty piece of paper the receptionist in Saigon wrote out for me converting English to Vietnamese for questions like, how much is this? Where is the nearest ATM? Where is the nearest hotel? This piece of paper has been worth it's weight in gold. With it becoming dark ... read more

Everyone has large buckets here apparently.........fulll of alcohol. We are in Ho Chi Minh city and i love Vietnam already. Loads of the buildings seem to be small but tall (kinda like the building from batteries not included). Leanne narrowly missed getting her bag stolen. Guess it happens everywhere but those moped cowboys really are quite clever. I made my biggest purchased ever since beginning our travels, a pair of denim shorts. I have searched high and low for a pair that fit my (cough cough) curvy figure. Just a heads up for any ladies that may be reading this blog, everythings cheap but clothes are tiny. We are staying in a lovely little family run guest house in district 1. I always prefer staying in family run places as it feels a lot safer (and ... read more

Monday, 16th April 2012 (Day 02) Despite the obvious flaws in Saigon Mini Hotel 5, there was a certain level of quality in the overall breakfast experience. The morning break was served in the Breakfast Room at level 10 of the property with a view of the Saigon skyline. The night before, I had pre-selected my breakfast items on the menu and the nice ladies would cook it right in front of me. Worth mentioning were the flavourful omelettes done almost to perfection - rich and creamy. After breakfast, it was time for me to head to the Ho Chi Minh City Museum about 25 minutes from where I stayed. The 35 degrees temperatures wasn't too inviting given the lack of shade even though navigating through the well sign-posted streets in District 1 was straightforward. Most ... read more

Following our Cu Chi tunnels experience we headed back to the capital Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon as it used to be known before reunification) and after longed for showers and some lunch we headed off on a scary but hilarious cyclo tour of the city. Cyclos are the equivalent of the Indian rickshaws, only on these contraptions you sit at the front with the guy pedalling behind you rather than in front in India. This, of course, means that YOU are heading into the traffic first! Remember my description of the massed mopeds? Well all 4 million of them seemed to be heading towards us as we set off ACROSS the flow of traffic on left turns! Apparently cyclos have right of way in this crazy system and very trusting of this rule the riders ... read more

George: On 7th April, it’s very stormy. We go for a swim in the rain and return home and get a car back to the Hong Ngoc hotel. At night I get ill and have to move in with Mum, it’s terrible diarrhoea because I put my finger in my mouth after putting my hands on the floor near the lake. I am also vomiting a lot. We go on an overnight train to Hué for one night, the bumping around on the train doesn’t agree with my stomach. When we get there I start to feel a bit better and by the evening I’m 100% better but Dad and Ruby are both ill. (Hey! You’ve missed out the visit to the Imperial City completely here George, Ed!) Me and Mum order pizza from room service ... read more

Sunday, 15th April 2012 (Day 01) My Jetstar plane touched down at Ho Chi Minh Tan Son Nhat International Airport at 8.30am this morning. Having spent a couple of days in the city in late 2010, there was a sense of familiarity as I passed through the arrivals on my way to the bus-stand. My 2 nights stopover in HCM was a bonus given that my main purpose was to visit the city of Vientiane during my 1 week break from work. While the airport bus 152 had since upped it rates from 3,000 dong to 8,000 dong (what a rip-off), this was still the most economical way for me to get to my hotel in District 1. My bedroom wasn't ready by the time I arrived at url=http://www.tripadvisor.com.sg/ShowUserReviews-g293925-d1439250-r128376074-Saigon_Mini_Hotel_5-Ho_Chi_Minh_City.htmlSaigon Mini Hotel 5 @ 196 Bui Ven ... read more

The last day in Saigon is a slow day. Ellen and Alex are trying to throw off lingering tummy bugs and I was keen that these are arrested before we undertake the next stage of travel, a lengthy trip by bus through the Mekong Delta to the Cambodian border. Loc and I meet in the evening for few beers to say goodbye. He had come back from Vung Tau earlier that day and was carrying a bag of cooked horseshoe crabs to take to a mates place for a house warming. These were a special treat rarely seen in Saigon and we devour one at the roadside café we are drinking at. The next day, after fond goodbyes to Mrs Long, we take the Phung Tran sleeping bus for a six hour ride to Rach Gia. ... read more

Showered, backpack off, teeth brushed after a 22 hour flight, I sit on my bed, savoring the air-conditioned cool air, and am at a loss for what to do. Simply because I have no idea where to begin. I can hear the honk of horns and the nasal melodic cries of the old woman pushing her cart through my closed window, like the city's intensity is so strong it beats itself against the glass, trying to get in. I feel excited and overwhelmed all at once and I half want to get in bed, hide under the covers, and wish myself back home and half want to dive right into the mess. Home not being an option and resting beneath a comforter in 90° heat not advisable, I take the leap. Ho Chi Minh City (aka ... read more

From the air it looks like any other city: straight roads branching out from a cluster, houses compacted into exact squares, the lines etched with a razor from this vantage point. Skyscrapers and houses break up the landscape and rooftops here look like rooftops anywhere. Only, the river is brown. And not brown like a mild layer of dirt, but brown like milk mixed with coffee. It's a filth that marks the land as used, that tells me I am definitely not in Kansas anymore. The plane bumps as it lands, all the passengers forced to lean to the right. Can planes this big roll over like a capsized boat in water? Heat hits me as I step from aircraft to landing passageway; sticky and thick in my lungs like I'm wearing a mask. And the ... read more
