My next stop ended up being the coastal city of Nha Trang. I had heard differing opinions of Nha Trang, but in my mind it was still worth giving it the benefit of the doubt. The positive reviews generally spoke to the natural beauty of the bay (consistently voted as one of the most beautiful in the world) as well as activities such as snorkelling and boat tours which are a draw. On the other hand, the drawbacks that I knew of included the Russian/British party scene and the Miami-like vibe I had heard about. I arrived via bus which unfortunately only had one departure from Mui Ne at 1:30pm and arrived at roughly 7pm. I walked about 25 minutes to my hotel (I decided to book a hotel as it was only $12 a night ... read more

Day seven - Sunday got off to a slow start due to the late night partying, we missed breakfast and ended up ordering some chips and bread to the room. The idea was to have chip butties however it turned out that the bread was sweet so that did not end up happening. I spent some time on the balcony looking down at the street, even though this hotel was on a side street there was still plenty to look at; scooters meandering through crowds of people and tiny vans beeping and weaving. People carrying boxes of all sorts of exotic fruits like dragon fruit, durian and lychees are a common sight. The street sellers always seem to be out in force, even coming in to restaurants to try and sell you anything from cigarettes and ... read more

The sixth day was all about the nighttime adventures. We got up and had breakfast in the hotel - I was given sweet and sour spicy spaghetti with green beans, interesting but definitely spicy enough to wake me up! We then took our bags downstairs and checked out. Despite not being the easiest of guests the staff were helpful and kind and allowed us to leave our bags there until we could check in to the next place. We hopped in a taxi to go and see Po Nagar Cham temples, the humidity was through the roof and I found myself glad I had a hat with me to use as a fan. The temples were very beautiful, the stonework was lovely and I loved the statues dotted everywhere amongst the foliage. We didn't spend long ... read more

Day five was an unexpected one! Finally managed a lie in and then headed down for breakfast, after the problems with the airport shuttle the staff were very eager to please and brought me plates of noodles and cabbage. Not exactly what I would choose as breakfast food but when in Rome.. Alice (my travelling companion) had a few words with the manager about some of the problems with the hotel - nothing serious but not quite what we were expecting. The manager offered us a few things to make up for it, such as free ride to the airport, but none fitted in with our plans until he suggested a trip to the I-resort mud bath and spa. The mud bath felt surprisingly good and it was hard not to just float the whole time ... read more

The fourth day was a travelling day, up early (again!) and headed to Cat Bi airport. The roads became markedly more orderly as we neared the airport and we were amazed by the scale of some of the huge houses we saw, the decadence in comparison to the other places I'd seen was unbelievable. I'd had my doubts about our ability to navigate a solely Vietnamese speaking airport but it all went very smoothly and I once more found myself being woken up by the plane as it landed. Unsure as to whether the hotel had received our emails asking for a shuttle bus we waited at a small cafe then eventually organised our own transport - it turns out our emails had gone into their spam folder! The drive to the hotel was about as ... read more

Geo: 15.875, 108.336There may not be a more picturesque location in Vietnam than Hoi An's Old Town - too bad it doesn't really feel like Vietnam! Good or bad, Hoi An's Old Town feels extremely foreign compared to our previous stops - it seems almost too perfect, too manufactured, to be the Vietnam we've come to know. If the World Showcase at Disney's Epcot Center had a Vietnamese pavilion, it would probably look and feel just like Hoi An. In fact, strolling around the riverfront, with its intricate lanterns beautifully lit up, evokes images of Disney's Electrical Parade. Hoi An is Disneyfied Vietnam - even though we never came across Minh Mouse, Donald Duc, or Nguyen the Pooh, it still should be called Disney-Nam!Don't get me wrong, because there are some fantastic aspects of the Old ... read more

Geo: 10.9604, 108.311Chaotic, crowded, dusty, and polluted ... all those descriptors of Vietnam's largest city were verified as being true, but we still managed to find some positives about HCMC, which was far more enjoyable than its negative reputation would've suggested. Exploring HCMC was both maddening and exhilarating at the same time - love it or hate it, you can't deny that there is an indescribable buzz in the air, one that leaves you feeling wonderfully discombobulated.HCMC's notoriety led to us planning for only three nights here, which wound up being the perfect amount of time. Between the awesome activities and incredible food, HCMC left a very positive impression on us - but it's definitely a city where, had we spent even one more night, our perceptions would have changed dramatically. HCMC was new and exciting, ... read more

Hoi An - wow! We were about a kilometre out of the old town center where all the "You buy?!!" action is. We taxied in on the first morning ($1.50) and walked and gawked. Hundreds of pedestrians in the walking and biking only area where there are also hundreds of street-side hawkers and stalls/shops ranging from quite high end, to hole in the wall stinkers. The old town is virtually given over to selling. Anything. Very oriented to tourists with dozens of tailoring shops (which Hoi An is renowned for) offering quick turnover suits, shirts, dresses, pants, whatever, at prices way below NZ. We looked at one of the highly rated Trip Adviser places and were measured up for a few things. That took half an hour and we thought, we're not going to do that ... read more

They call it stormy Monday....and Tuesday's just as bad.....It was a very stormy Monday, windy and persisting down rain all day...unusually so....crossing Tran Thi Ly bridge where last week the repercussion of thunder claps over my shoulder bowled me across 3 lanes, last night I was blown across 3 lanes, water gushing, plastic poncho billowing out like Michellin man....the rubber-to-road ratio of a bald-tyred 125 Honda is scary......and then smacked in the head by a huge moth.....Sister, did you see the size of the balls on that moth?....it was Mothra....it was Behemothra...how was it surviving in this weather? A special specie of bad weather moth? Of course the forecast....I believe here we only have postcasts....was for a really big storm on Tuesday....didn't they notice it was here...now...Monday?....So they ordered all the schools closed on Tuesday....Although it ... read more

It's the 15th again...of the lunar calendar...full moon, start eating dog, time for a haircut, many vegetarian meals, special prayers and offerings, incense all along the beach...wtf...It's a special day. The 15th of the 7th month is a special day for praying to/for mothers, grandmothers etc...and the month of the lost souls (I feel quite at home) so be very careful....in the pagodas, wear a white rose if your mother is still kicking, red rose if she has moved on. And there's no word for blue....you can say "green like the sky" for instance....the frogs introduced so many words, why not Bleu? Every morning there are lots of tourists taking extravagantly posed crack-of-dawn pix....the holding out of hands, open mouth etc....and most of them have the photographer standing still and directing the subjects so they line ... read more
