The ice hockey tour in Thailand ended and I took a flight from Bangkok to HCMC (Saigon) to overnight and wait for Kathie's arrival tomorrow morning. Stayed at Alagon Central in D1 - and went around the corner to our friend "Mr Twitchy" - local little restaurant and bar. He remembers me from previous visits to HCMC with tour groups. Early evening as I have to go to airport to meet Kathie... read more

At 1:00 I crossed the street for the fitting of my “áo dài”. Hang greeted me cheerfully and led me to the fitting booths. The pants and dress felt unbelievably light, like feathers. Hang had to help me with the snap buttons on the raglan-sleeved dress. Looking into the mirror I felt so pleased to be in such a beautiful dress! The sleeves were too long, and the dress and pants also - I asked for the remnant from shortening the dress as a souvenir. The back darts were too tight; a seamstress ripped them out with such speed I was certain she was ripping the silk. Of course not! The finished garments would be sent to our hotel along with all the other orders. Then Janetta asked me to comment on the fit of Mary’s ... read more

We got on the van across the river for a short drive to the Hoi An Museum, which had been recently relocated into a French Colonial building (always yellow with white trim). The first room had unusual displays of ancient burial clay pots, probably from the era of the Cham. Some were large enough to easily hold a whole person, but others were small enough they could have held only bones, or perhaps a child. In the next room were remains from early trade with Europeans, mainly Dutch and French, plus Chinese - during typhoon conditions sailors used to rent or buy a house on shore in or around Hoi An and set up a permanent household. In the corridors were sculptures portraying fog and trees that seemed to drift in the breeze – all in ... read more

Our breakfast was taken in a large “room”, roofed but open on all sides. I have been enjoying Vietnamese breakfasts, which today consisted of a thickened chicken soup and vegetables with noodles, plus my own addition of egg bread, so I could taste the tangy lemon jelly. We drove most of the way back north to Da Nang, turning off for My Son, an important Hindu temple site. The Cham people are more original to this area than the Vietnamese; however, their population is small now. Their historic culture extended from the first to the twelfth century. The original wooden temples burnt down; what we saw were the tumbled remains of their brick temples. My Son is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and a number of countries have contributed both money and expertis... read more

Our last taste of Da Lat was a brisk walk to the market, about half a kilometre from the hotel. Dodging our way through a couple of traffic circles and a busy road, we first saw bright flower stalls - surprising to me was the number of flowering cactuses for sale. We moved indoors to the sellers of dried fruits and other sweets. Then we were in the real action where the fruits and vegetables were piled high: Chinese cabbage, artichokes, bitter melon, limes, cilantro, and many others. We were drawn further by fishy smells; freshness is guaranteed because water was bubbled into the enormous bowls keeping grouper, snakehead fish, and catfish alive. Once purchased, the fish is skilfully gutted and cut into pieces by big cleavers. Except for those fish sold to the Buddhist monk; ... read more

The overnight train was quite eventful as voyeurs, we were in a seat as they had sold out of sleeper bunks. Firstly, there was an announcement about the great Vietnamese railway (in English), at least 3 trolleys of food went up and down and then they started showing a Smurf film! People had lots of luggage all over the carriage, and they slept everywhere including the aisle which was difficult to negotiate at 5.30am when the train pulled into our stop. A cab was there to meet us to take us to our very grandly named hotel Mountain View, which all I can say did have a mountain view, and a very friendly landlady, and a room. Maybe it was the early hour, or lack of sleep, but we were quite stunned on arrival and took ... read more

We had our free meal at the hotel last night. It was OK. Had drinks before, as did other guests. One had his birthday and the hotel provided a cake. We sang, but luckily didn't have to eat any. It was so brightly coloured we'd have been awake for a fortnight. It had the feel of an expat do, not my scene so much, prefer the scruffy backpackers. Two Kiwis told us about a charity for disabled people in the town called the Lifestart Foundation which does free Vietnamese classes and lantern making/painting (€33) courses. Sounds fun! We thought we'd like to do it this afternoon. The receptionist phoned up for us and they said yes, but could we go and pay a deposit. Didn't really want to go to town so early, so she phoned ... read more

If you are flying with Vietnam Airlines, make sure you print out your e-ticket and don't just rely on using your booking reference, even though they will have your name on their schedule and identify you with your passport. Two people at Vientiane ended up having to pay for their seats again, which must have ruined their day! With Jetstar there are no e-tickets and we haven't been able to check in online, but the booking email with the reference on it is enough for them. The hotels with no printer attached to their guest use computers will all print out for you if you email it to them. 2 nights ago we walked into town and it is quite a long way - 20mins at a yomp, 30 mins ambling, and don't expect to be ... read more

Waiting for the last flight from Hanoi to Da Nang we found out that the times of both flights had been changed days ago. We booked through budgetair.com, as it was the cheapest, but unlike other websites they didn't bother letting us know. Very annoying, as had we known we could have set off later and there would have been no need to get stressed and yomp through the airport in a frenzy. Note to self:check departure times on the net the day before. Our driver was waiting with his sign with my name on it, very grateful I'd emailed so he wasn't hanging around. Mr Vu. Very young, very keen to practise his English. This required a lot of very careful listening on our part. No final consonant sounds, no consonant clusters. He has been ... read more

By the way, if you are viewing on a phone you may not realise all the photos are way at the bottom of the page. Rob Writes So, time to leave Ho Chi Mihn City. Up early again (this isn’t easy) in order to risk everything on the public bus to HCMC’s international airport. This was the same bus as we got from the airport, so we weren’t really stepping into the unknown here, which is always a relief. I can’t remember if I mentioned it before but its bus 152 which frequently goes between District 1 and the airport. We arrived at the airport without issue and checked into our flight to Da Nang. We were on our way to Hoi An, but Hoi An doesn’t have an airport, so you fly into the nearby ... read more
