(part one, feb 21st) definitely one of the most heart-blowing experiences of the trip!! discovering my roots in the rice fields. visiting the family tomb + temple. an epic experience. i walked on the earth that my great ancestors walked on. and not only that...i visited a town where my great grandfather + uncle were very well-respected and loved individual in the province. let me back up. so that 13 hour bus ride was in fact worthwhile. it got us to the family tomb! once we arrived in hoi an, we slept long and hard...then hired a taxi to take us to the family tomb. my uncle vinh had been there 5 years earlier. we embarked on a journey into the rice fields. ahhhh. i settled into the calm. after asking some local villagers where the ... read more

so after a 13 hour bus ride from nha trang to hoi an i hoped to get some sight seeing in. we were leaving that afternoon at 4p via taxi to hue. i had read that hoi an is THE place to get custom tailor sewn clothes made in a matter of hours. they weren't kidding! the streets were lined with hundreds of tailors. who to go to? we stopped in a place called "Lovely." once i saw the shop owner was pregnant, i thought of all my girlfriends back home who just gave birth or are prego...and i was sold that this was the shop for me. mom and i ordered a bunch of clothes and the shop owner got on the phone to her calvary of tailors and one by one, 3 tailors pulled ... read more

i must start this entry on a positive note: the rice fields. the first time i experienced the country side of vietnam. meditative. calming. soothing. watching the blades of grass float with the gentle caresses of the wind....epic. cannot be explained in words. my heart was full. fully in the moment. THAT was the highlight of a 13 hour bus ride. yes folks, 13 hours! for those of you thinking about taking the open bus ANYWHERE in vietnam....did the travel books mention that even though the price of the bus is probably 10 times less than the train....there is no bathroom on the bus, the drivers hardly speak english, and they seldom stop for bathroom breaks or food breaks.....depends on when they have those needs! and so my first major "lost in translation" moment in vietnam. ... read more

Despite my calamitous introduction to cycling in Vietnam, I was soon remounting the spokes to trekk off to more remote regions. Relief from the harassing calls of moto-bike drivers was an additional benefit. And so, I set off to visit a reknowned pagoda, which turned out to be under reconstruction. At any rate, I was enjoying my ride so much, I decided to continue on down the dirt track, all the way out of the city limits, and into some of the surrounding towns. In a matter of meters, I saw the world around me transform. Always a keen observer of the youth around me, I noticed the kids more than anything. Three little girls shouted gleefully in play as they tended a small shop. A hoard of 5 year olds gathered around to watch one ... read more

I am in Hoi An. Tailormade Clothing is cheap. Did not break budget! Can you believe that I have not been on the internet since Thursday afternoon! What is this world coming to when I don't go online for one day?? haha This will be a short one since the connection here in Hoi An is really, really slow...if it is slower than Tam Ky than that means it is slow! So much to tell but that will have to wait until Monday. I will tell you this though. I picked out material for clothes to be made and I tried them on this afternoon. They will make a few alterations and it will hopefully all be ready to take "home" tomorrow. I can't believe that I bought a suit (jacket, pants and skirt), a cord ... read more

On Boxing Day (26th Dec) we flew from Ho Chi Minh City to Hoi An in Central Vietnam. Hoi An Old Town is a Unesco World Heritage Site, mainly because of its Chinese, Japanese and European influenced architecture. We parked ourselves in a convenient centrally-located guesthouse (Thanh Binh Hotel) and set about exploring the quaint narrow streets and the old temples. This place is also famous for its tailoring and has some 300 shops in its vicinity. Gerry had himself made a silk shirt (being completely fed up wearing the same old t-shirts every day!) and Denise 5 dresses (being completely greedy!). Out alone one morning taking photos some women persuaded me to have breakfast with them by the roadside. One of the women owned a boat and she desperately wanted me to take a trip, ... read more

Hi all, hope you have got your shopping done and the presents wrapped........if not just get down the pub and have a few festive drinks instead.....you know it makes sense....! Life is good here. We staying in Hoi An for 5 nights, could easily have managed a month there as it's a really great little town. Got plenty of clothes tailor made there.....final bill was 655 US Dollars. $400 of that was mine, but I got: 2 suits 1 Tuxedo 9 Shirts 4 Trousers 3 Shorts 2 Winter Coats 1 pair of shoes 1 pair of 'Personalised' Trainers (!!) 4 ties so I am happy with the loot. Posted most of it onto Oz (cheers Dave!!), which cost us 110 Euro for everything to get there safe and sound (fingers crossed). Last Sunday we bumped into ... read more

We decided to give DaNang a miss and are now here in nice little Hoi An. Our 8am bus this morning didn't show up until 10:30am so we didn't arrive until almost 2pm. Lovely hotel with a small pool, $10 for the room. For our last day in Hue yesterday we went to the DMZ (De-Militarised Zone). Trip left at 6am and returned at 6pm, and we worked out that we were only off the bus for a total of 3 hours (and that included lunch & breakfast!!). Exploring the tunnels that the Vietnamese lived in for 4 years was the highlight, but overall the trip had far too much time spent on the bus......at least it only cost $8 each! Also got to see an old American Army Base with helicopters, tanks, and stuff. The ... read more

We had a few hours free in Hue, and then we took about a 3 hour ride to Hoi An. Driving through Hai Van Pass was pretty nice. The scenery was amazing. We had views of the beach, and views over the mountains. Our hotel in Hoi An was pretty big. On the outside it looked pretty posh, so we were all a bit puzzled when we pulled up there. When we went inside the rooms were in good condition, but didnt quite reach that 5 star rating. The town is full of tailors. I didnt go mad with getting clothes made. So I just looked through a few fashion magazines, and found a nice pair of jeans. So I got measured up, went back later that night, and then the next morning they were finished. ... read more
