After the awful train journey (no air-con and chain smoking locals) to Nha Trang we decided to fly to the next place which was Danang in order to get to Hoi An. This was much better however it was the first time I have ever been on a plane that had graffiti. We caused a big argument amongst the taxi drivers at the airport as there is the usual 'rip off the tourist' set fee to Hoi An. However during discussion with the girls who were asking for this, the Taxi drivers behind signalled a cheaper price to us which we took, much to the annoyance of the girls. We don't know any swear words in Vietnamese but we were pretty sure we were hearing them on the radio as we left. Hoi An was really ... read more

After Sapa we headed South and did a two day tour of Halong Bay (a world heritage site 60km South of Hanoi) on a boat..weather wasn't the best but we still had great visability for stunning rock formations and the chance for some kyaking. Once back on dry land in Hanoi we hopped on a train and headed South to Hoi An (tailor made clothing capital of SE Asia!). Hoi An was a really beautiful old style town with some of the best food on offer that we have experienced so far. We spent most of our time just wandering the streets and eating, although we did give in to temptation and both had some 'interesting' clothes made - Simon, a brown, tight, 70's style suit (as bad as it sounds) and Adele a beautiful chinese ... read more

A sleeper coach had deposited us in Hoi An after holding us hostage at an associate hotel. The hotel staff were so keen to get our business they paraded the coach aisles pleading for us to just take a look at the rooms. A few passengers resorted to saying they would look at the rooms & once off the coach they scarpered along with all their heavy luggage. The long walk back into town was probably why the hotel didn't get much business in the first place. After we had been released our hotel had arranged for a taxi driver to pick us up & drive the short distance down the road through the oncoming hoards of cycling students wearing white Aoi Dai dresses (the girls anyway) on their way to school. Having caught up on ... read more

We went on our cooking course today which was really good fun. We started off in the market where we had a guided walk whilst they pointed stuff out to us. It was useful as we got to find out what several things we did not recognise were. After that we boarded the boat to Red Bridge cooking school. We started off with a walk around the herb garden before we went to the main teaching room. Each dish was demonstrated to us before we got to have a go ourselves. The first one was eggplant in a tomato sauce (that was pretty straight forward). The next one was fresh Vietnamese spring rolls. They are like the Chinese ones but they are not fried. We had to make the rice paper that they are rolled in ... read more

We are in Hoi An at the moment which is about half way up the coast. We flew here on a slightly dodgy flight at 7:30am this morning so we are pretty tired. This has to be the clothes capital of the world. It is only a tiny place but the are over 200 tailors and probably a similar number of shoe shops. Everything is made to measure so we went a little crazy (ok a lot crazy!) I decided to get a dress and a top made. You just need to give them a picture, or a garment that you want copied and then choose your fabric and you are away. They have a lot of NEXT directories for you to look at, as well as tons for magazines. It is really good as you ... read more

.... the only thing I'm hunting for, is an outfit that looks good... See my vest, see my vest, made from real gorilla chest. Feel this sweater, there's no better, than authentic Irish setter.... The passionate lyrics of the Simpsons' Monty Burns when he tells us of his joy of having a full wardrobe, we too wanted to feel this joy so off we popped to Hoi An (not Ha Noi) a small town of 75,000 people and everyone of them is in the business, no, not show business, the business that is tailoring, the art of cutting and sewing the cloth of your choice. Hoi An is a great wee spot in the North of the Southern part of Vietnam, if you know what I mean, it's pretty much the middle of the country, 3 ... read more

Hoi’An... An idyllic mix of Asian and Continental. Pastel coloured houses line palm-fringed streets. Row upon row of cloth shops sharking for your custom. Myself, Sarah, Colton and Rob arrived here yesterday, due south from Hue. The beach just up the road, days can be filled with kitting yourself out with a new wardrobe, tailor made to your specifications, and I hope lots of lazing around in the sweet sunshine. It’s hot, it’s beautiful, it’s cheap. We had to bid our farewells to the Swedes, for now at least. Visa issues. Until we meet again in Laos... ... read more

Hey everyone, Our trip to Vietnam has been great. We arrived in Hanoi and decided to get the night train all the way to Saigon. The trip should take 30 hours but the train kept breaking down! We ended up getting off the train halfway there in a place called Danang. From here we travelled to our first destination, the beautiful town of Hoi An. Hoi An is so pretty and charming. We stayed in a really nice hotel, with hot watter, hurray! In Hoi An every second shop is a tailors. The clothes are very cheap to get made, I got a really nice jacket made and Liam even got a pair of Puma runners made! We rented bicycles and took a trip to the beach. The cycle there was lovely, really scenic. On the ... read more

Hi all, Well last entry was from Hoi An, the little old colonial city of South Vietnam. We grabbed a bus from Hoi An to Hue (about 4 hours drive) and it cost the awsome amount of 3 bucks US ..... I'll have to get a second job when I get home : All the travel info we have read about this trip stated it was the most majestic trip over the mountains. We guess what. They have constructed a huge tunnel through the mountain range and now all you see is concrete, road and tunnel. (Took us about 10mins to get thru so it's a fair distance). But I suppose it did save us many hours on the journey. But then on saying that, the bus conveniently broke down at a Cafe on the way, ... read more

Mui Ne is a quaint little town along the coast of Vietnam, well known for its numerous tailor shops, beautiful narrow streets, and white sand beaches. We had a 12 hour bus ride from Nah Trang to Mui Ne. It was crazy, but went by in a flash because we are so used to these bus rides now. The road was extreemly narrow and windy, about 1.5 lanes wide, and on the side of a cliff that fell (a really really long way) down to the ocean. It was dark out, and the driver used the typical technique of roaring around blind corners while laying on the horn. As the g-force throws us to one side of the bus around the blind corner, the only thing we can think about is the potential outcome if a ... read more
