We went on our cooking course today which was really good fun. We started off in the market where we had a guided walk whilst they pointed stuff out to us. It was useful as we got to find out what several things we did not recognise were. After that we boarded the boat to Red Bridge cooking school.

We started off with a walk around the herb garden before we went to the main teaching room. Each dish was demonstrated to us before we got to have a go ourselves. The first one was eggplant in a tomato sauce (that was pretty straight forward). The next one was fresh Vietnamese spring rolls. They are like the Chinese ones but they are not fried. We had to make the rice paper that they are rolled in which is really tricky. There is a definite trick to getting it circular, cooked for the right length of time and then onto the plate. Once we had done that we still had to roll them up which was also pretty tricky especially if you want it to look neat. After that we cooked a pancake type of thing with shrimp and vegetables in

it. Last of all was the vegetable carving. We had to make a cucumber fan and a tomato rose. Neither of these ended up looking quite right! It was fun trying though. Once we had finished all the cooking we got to eat our creations which were all very tasty.

In the afternoon we went to the beach. It was a nice beach although there was no one on there as it was raining a bit. We went for a paddle in the sea which was surprisingly warm. We spoke to a local girl on the beach who thought we were crazy. She thought the weather was really cold and had about 3 layers of clothes on. I just had a vest top and a floaty cotton top on over that. It was really good to chat to her as she told us all about her life and general things in Vietnam. She also taught us lots of new phrases. We can now count to 10, say hello, goodbye, how are you and a few other things. Tim knows how to say "You are beautiful" which he keeps saying to all the waitresses!!

We tried on our clothes this afternoon which were all really nice. They are just making the final adjustments (they keep taking them in/out/up until you are happy) and we can pick them up tomorrow before we head off to Hue.
