The difference with buying things in China vs Buying this in vietnam is this; In China they will take advantage if they can, in Vietnam they believe they should take advantage of the foreignor. Case in point, After a long day of riding we pull into a city. Exhausted we struggle our way to restaurant and being asking the prices, the merchant puts on a big front and snickers with his friends as he demands high prices. Sometimes he can be haggles down sometimes he doesn't care to be haggled down. On the rare occasion he tells his friends to fuck off and we get a fair price. Once they start chuckling with eachother we head straight for the door. In China haggling has always worked like this, Dwo Shou Chen? Big-Small-Money and then when you ... read more

Arrived in Hanoi, so far so good. A touch pollluted but have enjoyed getting lost and consequently found again. Keeping up with tradition of trips that have preceeded this one i have been trying to get my hands on a relatively/very cheap bike. Think i have succeeded but time will be a good judge on that point! I paid 3,000,000 dong for the bike but you can pay about halfish for a bike with one gear (as in go) Anyhow one dosent seem quite enough. Also a by product of the cheapness is the size of the bike, definately asian size frame. To get anything bigger than that would take you into the realms of professional cycle shops in Hanoi and no doubt multiples of the price i paid. So yes the bike i am riding ... read more

In the early morning we had sunrise Tai Chi on the upper deck, it was invigorating! After that morning coffee and chatting, then buffet breakfast, packing, and disembarkation. It was a great way to see a gorgeous place. We drove 2 hours or so to a beautiful golf course for lunch and repacking of our large and small bags. Then headed another 1.5 hours to Hanoi airport for the 2 hour flight to Siem Reap Cambodia. On arrival there it was like coming into another time. Siamese pitch roofed terminals, stairs off the planes, like an old Bogart movie, it was balmy and felt sexy in a way. Inside, they had just that day changed the format of Visa on Arrival, and there was some confusion for a few minutes, but we soon got the hang ... read more

This morning after a leisurely breakfast and last bit of sightseeing on our own we boarded a bus to the new port at HaLong Harbor, and our beautiful Paradise Cruise Line junk for our overnight excursion. The trip up was about 3 hours, and the guide tried to make it interesting, but after an hour or so, it was redundant. The road was under major construction, nothing that could have been helped, and will be wonderful once it's completed! It is a glimpse into daily life of rural Vietnamese in the North, mostly farmers and factory workers, and those that support them. Get there, get there soon, Donald Trump is building a mega resort with a private club casino, and it will not be the same after it's finished. We had packed an overnight bag, a carry ... read more

Waking up to see it was still raining outside was pretty disappointing to say the least… Ah well… Nobody would give us money back for the trip at this stage, so rain or no rain, we were off to Halong Bay! I was really surprised how flooded some areas of Hanoi were when we were driving through the city. Still it didn’t stop all the bikers from moving around! Raincoats on, legs up in the air and speeding through the puddles… I was more than happy to be sitting in a van though… We had 13 people on board and it looked like it was going to be our group for the next days. Good size of a group I would say! And we had quite a mix of nationalities as well which is always interesting ... read more

Our journey from Hanoi to Cat Ba Island was something of a magical mystery tour. Other than our fellow tourists there were no other English speakers on the bus so once we reached the port town of Hai Phong a lot of guesswork was required. We had all expected to change bus there but it turned out to be a rest stop instead. We were then ushered back onto the bus which then continued for about half an hour longer to a rickety quay. No ferry arrived for us though. A hydrofoil pulled up alongside the narrow jetty and about half a million Vietnamese tourists poured out of it. We had to stand outside in the torrential rain whilst they filled our seats on the bus. Eventually we were all on the hydrofoil which sped off ... read more

Parental apologies for the sudden cessation of the blog we understand that this might have caused some concern. We really hadn’t realised that Western Australia (WA) was going to be quite so limiting as far as communications were concerned, and should have guessed this given our plan to camp in the wild and also the geographical isolation of the state. Sophie will finish off our trip to Vietnam, the final few days were spent at Halong Bay. We had hoped to do a separate page of photos of the different ethnic groups in Vietnam but now find ourselves completely confused with the intricacies of dress, so it’s difficult to identify some of the different groups. Anyway, we will give it a shot over the coming weeks. Sophie and Jonathan also have to do a presentation in ... read more
