We spent about 5 days in Ho Chi Minh, our second night there we met up with some Spanish buddies and I arranged to meet my uni friend Harriet who I haven't seen in like 2 years and has been teaching in 'Nam for 9 months - we had a awesome night with all of them and taught them all Irish snap (Obvs!). Drinks were flowing that night so the next day I had a bed day and Cec went off to be cultured. Speaking of cultured, we visited the War museum, the Cu Chi tunnels (where they did the fighting in the war) and did a day trip of the Mekong Delta; honestly it was all a bit dull so for the details see Cec's blog :) Our last night in Saigon was St Patricks ... read more

Different country but same rules apply: Step 1: Book the day off work (If St Pat's falls on a Sunday book the Monday off) Step 2: Decorate the house with as much green as possible (Many thanks to Nadine's family bringing over decorations during their holiday in Vietnam) Step 3: Wear something green and if possible mark yourself as Irish with a shamrock or flag Step 4: Invite anyone who will have the craic and name them "Honorary Irish folk" (If anyone is not wearing green they have to wear the PONCHO OF SHAME for 30minutes) Step 5: DRINK DRINK and DRINK some more Step 6: Wake up unsure of what time you passed out ... laugh at the state of the others (in this case Gary with his funky beard) Step 7: Ignore the mess ... read more

Vietnam loves it's festivals and special days. Several times a year they celebrate the day for women. All men are expected to shower the women in their lives with gifts and flowers. This Woman's Day we decided that in the spirit of equality of the sexes we should show our support of the female gender by becoming part of it for the evening. (Really we wanted the free beer jokingly promised to us in the bar when they said all women get a free drink). I'm not ashamed to say that we tried on a few outfits before settling on our dresses for the evening. Fergal went for the cheap slag look, I went for the high class hooker look, and Neil went for the tranny get up. We had a great night cross dressing; the ... read more

After months of being in Vietnam we were looking forward to the Tet holiday, the main holiday of the year when most people get time off to travel and see friends and family. Thankfully this also meant that schools were off for two weeks and we had the opportunity to relax and travel a bit. My housemate Nadine's family arrived in Hanoi at the very start of our time off, it was so good to see familiar faces from home, and even better to see the shock on their faces at the different sights in Vietnam. I always wondered what my face was like watching 4 people drive past on a motorbike, or looking at the street stalls serving food; i'm guessing it was just like the expressions they were walking around with. Showing them around ... read more

Just a quick update on the culinary "delights" that we have subjected ourselves to in Vietnam. We said we would be open minded and try as much as possible and so far so good. So in my previous blog I had mentioned trying crabs, buffallo, frog and different types of duck ... that wasn't so bizzare or out of the comfort zone. But NOW we have recently been taken to try local delicacies on the street by our Vietnamese friend Kevin. First we tried Duck Tongue ... it was duck, but not the part that I had ever considered eating before. I must say that although it is quite crunchy, once you forget to be nervous about what you were eating, it tasted quite nice. The street vendors typically each have their own specal delicacy and ... read more

Christmas to most westerners is one of the most important holidays of the year whether for religious reasons or not. It is a time for family and for showing others that you care. For most Tay (westerner) in Vietnam it is a time where people would miss home, and miss their family and friends. Thankfully over here we have formed our own version of family to take care of one another and lift each other's spirits. Although im sure some feelings of homesickness were felt, it turned out to be a wonderful christmas. Christmas in Hai Phong started off with a problem. The Office were trying to force us to teach on Christmas day although we had previously been promised it off. This was quickly resolved by telling the staff that if we were scheduled for ... read more

I didn't get another blog written on the Thai - Cambodian border. The hundreds of us camped in-line in no-man's land like displaced refugees, no food, no water, started to get a bit agitated. The boos and heckles as tour groups marched past us had turned into genuine anger, and the Thais were threatening to close the border if the shouting continued. I put away my phone, and ceased the blogging in case (in hope) there was a riot. So instead I've started writing this from our fifth night train of the trip. From Beijing to Bangkok, we've ridden some serious rails. A complete guess puts it at pushing 3000 miles on night trains so far. I'm meant to be writing about our trip to Halong Bay, but the strange thing about being so far behind ... read more

A weekend away was just what the doctor ordered. With our friend working in Halong it seemed the perfect excuse to visit on our long weekend. We could let her show us the nightlife, and while she was at work we could be touristy and see the sights of Halong Bay. As usual we set off in quite a rush, the taxi made it's way to the bus station at a snails pace and the rickity little coach was about to set off the instant we arrived. We hadn't even paid the taxi before random Vietnamese were dragging us towards two separate buses, both urging us to get on. We kept saying "Halong Bay?" and they kept chattering away and pulling at us. Seconds later the decision was made ... we would get on the bus ... read more

Three months in! Do I still enjoys teaching English ... YEP! Do i still think the kids here are absolutly insane ... YEP! So not a lot has changed. Work for Sunrise has got busier since I have arrived. We now have contracts with 6 different schools so our schedule has picked up quite a bit, and with more schools means more planning of lessons which is a bit of a pain. Each school has a different feel to it, in some you feel comfortable - the kids are nice, noisy but still doing their work. In other schools however it feels more like babysitting a bunch of young kids with ASBOs. They kick, punch, scream and run amock around the classroom, disregarding any attempts by myself or the Vietnamese assistant to calm them down. Sometimes ... read more
