Cat Ba Island Deciding to go it alone is not as easy as we'd first hoped! We tried in vain to get on a local ferry to our chosen island, but instead had to go with another tour boat!.This turned out in our favour as we were able to spend yet more time on a sundeck watching the bigger, more dramatic limestone peaks pass us by. Another perk was a visit to another, different yet equally majestic cave, seems this bay is riddled! Check the pics.......... At last we reached the island and bundled aboard a local minivan for the superb hour long drive to the south of the island (only one large town and a few villages). The scenery was amazing, jungle interspersed with rice paddys, tapioca bananas, and plenty of chickens dogs and pigs for ... read more

... read more

The wireless in our new hotel doesn’t quite reach us on the sixth floor so we’ve had to wait to update at a cafe with wifi. Day 1: Adventures to Cat Ba Alarm mishap - around 630 am I started to get the feeling that we missed our 520am alarm... so we didn’t get to take the 2nd earliest bus out to Cat Ba. We decided that since we were still up early to go look for this place that we could book the tickets at instead of trying to at the bus station that supposedly spoke no English. This other place ran the same company but it was better for foreigners to book their ticket there. Crossing streets is like playing frogger with our lives, crossing a freeway of bikes and scooters by just walking ... read more

I woke up still feeling sick and had toast and apples for breakfast. As everyone else enjoyed eggs and oranges. We sailed around the bay until we got to another dock where 4 of us got off the boat that had booked the 3 day/2 night tour and the others stayed on the boat since they booked only 2 days/1 night. Pete, myself , Roxanne and Dycho, a couple from Holland, went with Tam to meet up with our van that would take across around Cat Ba Island today. Our hotel was on the other side of the island and we stopped half way at Cat Ba National Park. We had a hike this morning and I wasn’t sure how I would make it as I found out it was 2 hours long. I popped an ... read more

After cruising Halong Bay, the boat dropped me off on Cat Ba Island - the largest Island in Halong Bay. The island is straight out of Jurassic Park. It's raged, mountainous and covered by thick forest. I met other travelers on the pier and we decided to have dinner in town. We went to a local place that was totally empty. 5 minutes later it was full of local women. When they were done, the place got crowded with local men all feasting and doing shots of vodka. It was fantastic. We had a really nice dinner, and proceeded to walk to the beach to find a place to stay. It was dark by then. On the advise of the Dutch couple I met earlier, we proceeded to Cat Co 2 beach. When we got to ... read more

Tuesday 25 May Cat Ba Island, Halong Bay. Its 6.00 am, and the noises of Vietnam have already had me awake for 30 minutes. Crossing from China to Vietnam, nothing marks the differential as much as the noise at the start of the day. If Robin Williams made us understand how HOT, DAMN HOT it gets here, then noise, noise, noise is what a visit will confirm. Nothing makes this change more obvious than the omnipresent motorbike. Whereas the Chinese have moved in massive numbers to silent electric battery powered scooters, and golf cart buses, the clattering Vietnamese “Honda Dream” still rules south of the border. Daylight signifies time to rest the thick digit on horns and for hopeful motorbike-taxis to start shouting, looking for work. The trucks, vans and buses, with their cascading multi-toned horns, ... read more

I wasn't sure about staying another day in Cat Ba, but it turns out that leaving early would have been a huge mistake. Kara and Paul, a honeymooning couple from Calgary climbed with Lizzy and I the first day. We all decided to do a motorbike tour of the national park. For 4 dollars and 50 cents we got a bike for an entire day. Gotta love the cost of activities here. We checked out a couple of caves, one by headlight only, which was pretty awesome and tooled around the island for the day, hitting pretty much every trailhead we could find along the way. Again, the pictures don't do the scenery justice. But I can try.... read more

Climbing was solid the day before, but the next day I got an offer I couldn't refuse: deep water free solo. No ropes, no protection, just bail into the ocean. Beth and I met an English couple who were solid climbers the night before, and the 4 of us booked an all-day trip. Honestly, the pictures speak for themselves, both of the bay and of the rocks. ... read more

'Are you going to Halong Bay' is the question on every tourist and tour operators lips when you arrive in Hanoi. The most visited site in all of Vietnam has, like most beautiful areas in the country, been subject to 'tour overkill' and with reports of "disco lighted" caves and dodgy boat trips we decided to go to Cat Ba Island and Lan Ha Bay instead. It was an efficient service to Cat Ba via a Bus-Boat-Bus combination and meant we arrived on the island four hours after departure. Cat Ba island lies further south of Halong Bay and sits within paddling reach of the beautiful Lan Ha Bay. The island had the added advantage of numerous beaches, a national park and plenty of Bia Hoi stalls. It was the perfect place to base ourselves for ... read more

I slept in the next morning as I wasn't on the tour's schedule anymore. The climbing trip leaving that day was a noon-to-fiver, so I had some time. The climb was guided which was nice because a lot of the people were newbies and I didn't have to worry about belaying. I wasn't really expecting to climb on this trip, so I needed to rent all the gear, but it worked out in the end. We bussed to "the valley" site, about 15 minutes, grabbed lunch and walked to the rocks. The walls were eroded limestone - tons of features and cool formations. Even the easy walls had some fun stuff to play with. Best part of the experience was getting asked to spot a lead climber until she reached the second bolt. After she led ... read more
