Our morning on Cat Ba was a busy one, we headed to the harbor again for a little boat trip out to a kayak station around some of the islands. On the way we saw several huge white jellyfish-which we were told are quite nasty ones- something the captain of our boat the previous day neglected to tell us as we hurled ourselves off the boat.. lucky escape me thinks!! We hopped in the double kayaks and headed off-once we had mastered our stroke we were ok although we tended not to be able to do much in a straight line..i blame the tide not our steering!!! we headed around some islands, into a lagoon and stopped on a little secluded beach for a dip and to rest our aching arms, a quick jaunt back and ... read more

Our day in paradise started with a quick shuttle bus and moto-taxi for some down to the harbour to get on our private boat. Bit of jostling for position on the top deck but everyone eventually got a decent sunbathing spot. After a while we stopped to go into some caves, they were pretty impressive though not many of the photos make it look that way!! There were lots of shapes made by the rocks that looked like animals and things but i wouldn't say we spotted many of them!! Back onto the boat for a short trip and then we dropped down to the lower deck for a many coursed lunch that stuffed us to the gills-but it didn't stop us shooting up to the second deck for some jumping off the boat. A nice ... read more

Across the border into Vietnam and you are met with another one horse dusty town. The one and only bus leaves at 2.00pm to Thanh Hoa and everyone knows there's a westerner in town. The bus driver, passengers and by all accounts the towns occupants are all in on the act and YOU WILL get fleeced for your tickets and pay well over the odds. We stood our ground and let the bus drive off (if it had been left to me I would have gone back to Laos). It was all a game of who would give in first, but they know they have a captive market with us and finally a deal was brokered - still not to our benefit I hasten to add. The bus was the oldest most uncomfortable to date. The ... read more

04/09/08 Thursday Day 21 Bad Karma 2 Yet another day of bad karma. This will be a long one so have patience! Went the sleep around 10pm last night because we had to get up at 4.30 to be in time for our train at 6am to Hai Phong where we were to get the 9am high speed boat to Cat Ba Island and then have a nice relaxing day wandering around the town and hit the beach. Huge thunderstorm last night. Started around 1am. Serious amount of lightening strikes and thunder and loads of rain. Anyway, alarm went off at half 4 to the noise of rain. It was still raining, and fairly heavy too. Did most of the packing last night so only a small few things to finish off. Got the lift downstairs ... read more

Well we went out to the Museum of Vietnamese ethnology in Hanoi the day before we headed for Halong Bay - really interesting but there are so many different tribes with slight variations on customs and traditions that they are all kind of lumped in together in our heads! The outdoor part of the exhibition was great - they had gotten a load of tribes people to come and build typical bamboo buildings for it and we could go inside and wander round them. Pictures to follow. the ride out was fun if insane as we got motorbike taxis and the way home was even madder as the two of us were brought on the one bike. More exhilharating than any rollercoaster (except maybe the Coney Island Cyclone). We found a couple of really good bars ... read more

Vzhledem ke konstelaci, kdy jsme meli kazdy v kupe nejake mistni lidi a meli horni lehatka, museli jsme jit spat a zadne recepce a akce se nekonaly. To jsme ocenili hned rano v pul pate, protoze jsme alespon byli vyjimecne vcelku fit na presun na autobusove nadrazi a odjezd do Ha Longu. Autobusy jezdi kazdou pulhodinu uz od pate rano, takze jsme dorazili akorat ... read more

Graveyards, Toy Soldiers,Violation and the Psychopath Thurs 28/02 - 29/02/08 Craig wakes us up the next morning, bright and early. We have decided to go trekking up the hill I saw yesterday, in search of the temple, and some relief from the boredom of Cat Ba. We walk down the high street and around the lake. The main drag of Cat Ba is sandwiched between the sea and a row of steep, rocky hill tops, one of which we are now about to ascend. We look for a way up. We're in a poorer part of town, set apart from all the hotels and tourist traps. We pick our way through the houses and narrow streets. There's no clear pathway, so we cut through a couple of back gardens, and walk through the trees close ... read more

Quoting the (in)famous Walter Sobchak, there are rules to life, except when he was in Nam. It is still the same, there don't seem to be many rules here. But, I left off in Laos, so we'll go back there first... Vientiane is incredibly small for a capital city, and it is incredibly clean for being in one of the poorest countries in the world. I was surprised by the number of posh bars, the beautiful riverfront, and the clean streets (well most of them). However, the temples, pagodas, national museums reminded us we were still in the developing world. Pha That Luang is a golden pagoda that is on the Lao national seal, but it is in bad need of a paint job; the National History Museum had paper mache exhibits that looked like my ... read more

Oh Captain, My Captain Wed 27/02-28/02/08 Free time. Too much free time. Ca Ba Island is a graveyard - off season, out of action, waiting around for the summer to come. The day starts with more internet frustration - two minutes, and I've had enough. I leave the guys, and go for a wander around the streets. The main strip is just one long road. I get to the end, and around the corner where the street curls back on itself, heading away from hotels and bars and towards the local's end of town. I do some scouting and find some better internet cafes, and then turn around, back the way I came. I see the three girls coming up the hill. We meet, and walk in the opposite direction, around a dirty little lake. ... read more

Hi everyone, Claire here again writing about a brand sprank new country! Well we landed in Hanoi-Vietnam earlyish on Sunday morning (about 2 weeks ago now at this stage!). The airport reminded us a little of Belfast City Airport but thankfully the time hasn't went in that fast! We jumped in our taxi and asked to be taken to our Hotel. Little did we know what Vietnam had in store for us. The taxi ride alone was an experience. First of all we had forgotten that they drive on other side off the road..well they're supposed to anyway but I think it's just a matter of where there's more space. I have never heard as many horns buzzing/beeping in all my life..I only thought Dungannon was bad on a Saturday!! The place was full of motorbikes ... read more
