Armed with bungee chords, we packed our bags onto our newly acquired (though far from new) motorcycles (an hour-long endeavour) and got heavily dressed in the sweltering heat, in order to both not get sunburned and be decently protected on the road. Joe, our saviour, guided us through Da Nang (and its huge roundabouts and heavy traffic) and got us onto the mountain road that would take us to our first stop, Prau. We knew we had about 40 km left and about 2 and a half hours before night would fall, but nothing prepared us for the road ahead. Beautiful views, winding hair-pin turns, and endless climbs and descents. However, what this translated into for us was a very sharp learning curve. Learning our bikes (and how to ride them), and trying to find the ... read more

We have finally slowed the pace a little here in the French built mountain resort of Dalat. At 5000 feet above sea level the weather is cooler, around 24 C and sunny, so we are promenading around the lake and visiting the local sites in a more leisurely way. Earlier we spent each of14 nights in a different bed, not quite as risque as it sounds. After a visit to Halong Bay, an area of outstanding natural beauty with atolls and caves, an overnight train from Hanoi took us up to the Chinese border in the mountains of northern Vietnam where we spent two days trekking, visiting ethnic minority villages and seeing a lifestyle that combines agricultural traditions with the communication technology of the 21st Century, mobile phones and flat screen TV's,in a wooden hut! We wanted to travel to Dalat to get away from the coast a bit and see a different side of Vietnam. The medium sized city of 200,000 is located in the Central Highlands of Vietnam at around 1500m altitude. The climate is much different from the coast with most days not going above 25 celcius and the evenings getting as low as 10 celcius. Dalat is the honeymoon capital of Vietnam so it is usually full of local tourists. It has also been referred to as Le Petit Paris due to its French Colonial influence that is evident in the abundance of French Colonial architecture and streets of French villas. Our early departure from rainy Nha Trang meant we would get to Dalat in the early afternoon and still have plenty of time to explore before ... read more

Our two day bike ride from Da Lat to Mui Ne was certainly a highlight of the trip. Although it sounds very adventurous, really we just hired a guide service that rented us two bikes, provided a support vehicle, and helped us get to the coast by bike, while transporting our luggage as well. Not only were we riding through beautiful country (though admittedly, we would not have minded our fancy road bikes over the clunky, rusty, mountain bikes they provided us with), but we also stopped at some of the places that make the Vietnam Highlands stand out. We visited flower gardens (they export flowers all over Vietnam and beyond), coffee farms, and a rice wine distillery. We had our first introduction to weasel coffee. The beans of weasel coffee have first been ... read more

So when I said it was going to be a 20h bus ride from Danang to Dalat, looks like I was being a little optimistic! Thanks to a supposed "big accident" involving the bus that was supposed to pick us up from the transfer stop at Nha Trang, we were delayed by almost 5h as we awaited the next available bus that the company could send us. As we were stranded at the transfer office, I asked them whether I could change my ticket and take the bus the next morning, thinking I could at least explore the beach resort of Nha Trang for one day instead of waiting around. The guy said no, and when I asked why not since the bus was delayed through no fault of mine, he merely said, "Your bus late, ... read more

We arrived in Vietnam after a midnight sleeper bus from Siem Reap to Pnom Penh, Cambodia. From Pnom Penh we crossed the border (relatively seamless) and arrived in Ho Chin Minh City, Vietnam. We stayed in Ho Chi Minh City for only a night. The motorbike traffic rivaled that of Bangkok, and the Pho (noodle soup) and coffee was fantastic. We got up early to run our first morning, and joined the multitudes in the park playing badminton, doing tai chi, and even ballroom dancing (this was all at about 7am!). I always associate exercise with a degree of wealth—individuals have the time (and extra calories) to consider their health, rather than conserving every ounce, because one is hungry. We boarded a bus for the Vietnam Highlands at 10 am, and after ... read more

We arrived to dalat Wednesday lunch time, even though we knew it was in the mountains we were surprised at how much colder it was there in comparison to everywhere else. We booked onto a tour for the next day which took us to a flower, coffee and weasel farm. We then tried a Vietnamese speciality, weasel coffee, made by feeding weasels coffee beans which they poo out whole, they are then cleaned off (hopefully) and made into coffee, it's supposed have an amazing flavour but I wasn't sold! We stopped at an amazing waterfall and got to climb right down and go behind it which was pretty sketchy but incredible when we were down there! We also stopped at a few other tourist attractions before heading back!... read more

Uiiiii long time no seen/write.

Day 40 We arrived in Nha Trang in the early morning and, after checking into the hostel, headed to the beach. Unfortunately, it was pretty overcast and there was a couple of short but torrential downpours, but that didn't stop us spending a couple of hours on the beach and dipping in and out of the sea. We spent the rest of the day having a relaxing wander and some great seafood. In the evening we organised some trips for the next few days, then went to bed on a few rum and cokes. Day 41 We had an early start today for a snorkeling trip to the neighbouring islands. This started with a visit to Mieu Island. We had an interesting tour through the small fishing village, with a brief visit to the local school ... read more

Day 11 On day 11 we caught another bus to Ho Chi Minh city. This involved crossing the border from Cambodia to Vietnam mid way of the six our trip. Ho Chi Minh city is more built up then Phnom Penh and there are lots more motorbikes. Our accomodation there was very nice and we will most likely stay there again when we return to Ho Chi Minh on our way back to Melbourne. Day 12 We spent Day 12 booking and planning the next few days in Da Lat. We went to the markets during the day and at night. After dinner as a group, we split up into two groups. Half of us chose to go bowling and the others went to the night markets for more shopping. Bowling was great fun and there ... read more
