Debs arrived safe and well in Bangkok. Met up with her and showed her the sights of Koh San Road. Took her out for a nite on the town….Gullivers of course!!! We then got on the overnight train to Chaing Mai. Stayed in a little guesthouse ran by what we think was a ladyboy!!! Headed straight to a hotel pool so that Debs could soak up some of the sun and try to catch up with us!! The girls booked to go on a 3 day trek I decided that I definitely couldn’t handle 3 days of rice and sleeping on the floor so I got on a 3 hour bus ride to a place called Nan. Saw the most beautiful views on the way there - all lush green mountains. Arrived and decided to book ... read more

I've been putting off sitting and updating you on my whereabouts! I keep forgetting to update the travelblog, sorry to anyone who's been checking it! When internet is cheaper and speedier, I'll work on sending more piccies... the ones of the island are beeeeuuuutiful!! As always, the level of beauty is impossible to enclose in a photo but at least it gives a jist and supples good memories... ANYHOO!! Tuesday night we spent 14hrs on a night train from Chang Mai to Bangkok, then Wednesday we hung around Bangkok IN THE RAIN!! (A tuk tuk is a scary place to be in a flood!) Wednesday night our journey to Koh Tao consisted of being shuffled onto a mini bus, made to wait round the corner for half an hour for the coach, driven most uncomfortably for ... read more

Yes, I did it! I managed to get my open water diving certificate! Well, it's not that hard (especially in Koh Tao, where dive schools exist in abundance!!), but I was a bit apprehensive about it at first! But once you get used to brathing under water, everything else comes naturally! And I had a good teacher, with just me and another Thai guy as students, so a lot of the time it was one- on- one teachings! Although I looked like a beached whale in the wetsuit, hehe.....but then again, who doesn't!? I'll leave the below pictures for you to judge by yourself, haha! ;) (it didn't work to attach it to travelblog so I will email a clip for all of you to have a good laugh at me, haha!)... read more

sorry for my incommunicado-ness, all. i've been island hopping the last few weeks in the gulf of thailand and have been just too lazy to write. the last three weeks or so have been great - marked by a wedding, a bike crash, a full moon party, and a crapload of scandinavians. i arrived in samui a few days before the wedding and promptly managed to crash my rented africa twin motorcycle on a gnarly mountain dirt road. the bike and i were relatively unhurt, me escaping with a few minor cuts and scratches and a bruised foot that looked like a purple bloated pig bladder for a few days. to those of you reading this right now, smiling and shaking your head, muttering, 'oh, chan, chan, chan,' i say, 'yeah. i know. piss off.' to ... read more

Greetings from Koh Tao (or as the locals would say, "you wanna tuktuk?"), a small island off the east coast of Thailand. We've come here to do a bit of diving and relax in tropical paradise for a few days before we start to head homewards. Let me take you back a couple of weeks.... We stayed in Perth with the very kind Karen and Rich for a couple more nights, long enough to see the World's Largest Australia Day Fireworks Display. Next stop was Singapore for a couple of nights. Yes it is as clean as you have heard and a strange mix of western and eastern. A few temples, a fantastic night safari at the zoo (you see all the nocturnal animals whilst they're awake) and some cheap shopping. Highlights of the zoo were ... read more

First off, I am two weeks behind. Sorry to all the readers who were expecting daily updates! I made (yet another) overnight journey down south to an island called Koh Tao. This place is supposed to be really good for diving. I was thinking that I might take my "Advanced Open Water Diver Course". Koh Tao is sort of the Diving instruction mecca for South East Asia. I got on the boat, and proceeded to listen to the hard sell from about 1000 guys who each claimed that their school / resort was the best. They all had impressive sounding, but similar spiels, so I just randomly decided on one. It's not like diving requires specialzied equipment and knowledge. If it did, I should have probably researched the best place to go before I got there, ... read more

Word, Myself and Ruth both became certified Open Water divers on Saturday after completing our Scuba courses. This meant we are both able to dive to 18m. However we both enjoyed it so much that we decided to do some more! I signed up for the Advanced Open Water course which involved learning some more theory and doing 5 more dives, and Ruth did 1 extra dive: 1.) Deep Dive to 30m. Ruth also did this dive. Saw much bigger fish at depth although it is a bit darker when you go down that deep. Had to do some tests on the bottom as you can become intoxicated from too much Nitrogen in the bloodstream (called Nitrogen Narcosis!). 2.) Navigation Dive. I learnt to plan a dive and navigate around the dive sight using a compass ... read more

We left Bangkok on a very comfortable double decker bus on which we got plenty of sleep during the night. Arrived in Chumpoon at about 5am and had to wait until 7am to catch the boat to Koh Tao. Boat took 3.5 hours on really choppy water......plenty of people being ill off the back of the boat. Made it to terra firma anyway where no one was boasting about having sea legs! Had prebooked accomodation and diving course so were wisked here from the pier yesterday on arrival. The place is really cool, 2 thumbs up for Koh Tao all round in fact! Did our first theory lesson yesterday evening for the Diving. Koh Tao is not suffering from Package Holiday spill-over like Koh Chang was. Water is colder, but clearer and cleaner so that is ... read more

On the island known as Koh-Tao, where we arrived from Koh-Phangnan home of the infamous full moon party, but we'll get to the party later. My body is a physical wreck. I got sun-burned, slipped on some rocks and gashed the bottom of my foot open (i have been referred to as the Hunchback of Koh Tao because I can't walk very well). The bright side to my foot is that Jason and Danielle are at my every whim. If I need a drink, they get it, if I need some sunscreen, they apply it. Don't tell them, but my foot healed two days ago. Koh-Phangnan is beautiful. It's what you picture paradise to be. Like in those great Corona commercials where all you see and hear are the waves hitting the beach. Picture Gilligan's Island ... read more
