(Dustin) Well, Koh Pha Ngan worked out pretty good for us after a few early hassles. On arriving we got a free taxi to a resort that obviously was looking for our business but somehow their prices weren't quite what they told us at the dock, prices we really weren't into paying. Thankfully even though our patience had run out for waiting for a room on the island, it seemed as though luck would have it that all their rooms filled up and we had to go somewhere else. Another free taxi by a young guy who was something like a travel agent, but he couldn't find anything for prices and quality we were looking for. So once again we opened the bible of the backpacker....The Lonely Planet....and looked for their recommendations. Well despite alot of ... read more

We can really say we feel like a proper travellers now. We can now join in all the conversations about awful transportation, rip off merchants and nightmare journeys. It's great to be on the road though. Well after an awful journey from Ko Lanta to Kho Phangan we arrived. We left Lanta at 7am and got to Phangan at 7:30pm. (And it's really not that far!!!) Then it was a nice little tour of Haad Rin (home of the full moon party!!) to try and find some accommodation. The Rough Guide came up trumps and we got a hut on a lovely little beach called Leela beach. (Leela Beach Bungalows - 400 bht) The hut was grimy, but we're poor so it had to do. All the accommodation prices double or triple leading up to the ... read more

After a 14 hour bus and boat trip we finally arrived in the port of thong Sala (thank fuck, that bus trip was a killer!). From there we jumped on straight into one of the pickup truck taxi's and set off on our way to Hat Rin beach where we were gonna spend New Year. After a 1 hour hunt for a hotel in Hat Rin we realised there was no-where with any vacancies - fuck! Thankfully, some bloke just randomly came up to me in the centre of town and offered us rooms at his resort just a 5min boat ride to this little beach across the way for only 350B (5 quid), as this was his first night at owning the place and was doing a special offer - cushtie! The place was called ... read more

KO PHANGNAN Steve and I arrived in Ko Phangnan last Tuesday in anticipation of the full moon part on the night of the 14th. Ko Phangnan is much less developed then Ko Samui, our previous destination. Had Rin Beach, the area where we stayed, caters exclusively to backpackers. I'd guess the average age is 20 and and everyone's there to bask in the sun and party at night. Steve and I arrived on the island early enough to get good accommodations. Our hut overlooked the beach and was ideally located a short distance from the nightlife. A typical day at Hat Rin Beach consists of... you guessed it... sun bathing. When the sun goes down everyone retires for a few hours to grab something to eat at the countless restaurants a block inland. Each restaurant displays ... read more

Lilo under one arm and snorkel poised, Linda resplendent in her new bikini, we hit the beaches of Koh Samui. Well, we would have done, had the weather not conspired against us by dumping a mini-monsoon of rain during our first two days on the island. We enjoyed a jungle canopy tour, which involves sliding down cables connected between trees in the island interior- a bit like the end of the Krypton Factor assault course, without the maroon tracksuits and pithy commentary from Gordon Burns. But aside from these thrills, we decided that Koh Samui didn't have the right beach for us, so we heeded the advice of some of our fellow travellers and sailed to Koh Phangan, a smaller island a little further north. We arrived in the port of Hat Rin- famous for its ... read more

Upon our arrival at the station, we were told by the attendant standing directly in front of the window, that there were no sleeper seats on the train south to Surat Thani. He said, “Would all of these people be waiting around if there were?” (as he pointed to the crowd laying about the station.) Dana’s ADD kicked in at this moment, and said to ask the person with the computer at the counter. That made sense to me, and sure enough there were exactly three seats for the train heading south. Usually you have to book sleeper trains in advance. Without hesitation we booked the train leaving in one hour for the southern route. We dragged our gear to the train, buying some beers just outside the car. Unfortunately, they were selling food and beverages ... read more

Hey all, Where to begin...So, after our last entry we headed to Vientiane, Lao PDR. Keif and I had quite the bus experience. Some highlights include: the 12 hour overnight bus from Chiang Mai blows out a tire 15 minutes into trip, we don't see any other foreigners at any of the bus stops we stop at, NOTHING is written in English, etc. Fortunately we were befriended by a girl named Phun (pronounced "fun") and she steered us in the right direction which was extremely lucky because two of the three changes we made from buses to sangtaew (trucks with benches in the back) were at unmarked spots on the street that we NEVER in a million years would have found by ourselves. So, the breakdown of the trip is as follows: after a 12 hour ... read more

************************Happy New Year!!!***************************** I flew in from Hanoi to Bangkok on the 27th December to meet up with friends from back home. Marianne arrived on the 28th and Claire arrived on the 29th. On the night Marianne arrived we went out drinking on Ko San Road and met some, erm, interesting people including a mad mad irishman and a Gwen Stefanni lookalike from Norway who was convinced the undercover cops were after her.... The two of them together was comedy genius, i'd pay to see that again. Then, just when I didn't think things could get more surreal Claire arrived and we ended up in a bitch fight with some ladyboys over a game of pool and walked home soaking wet up Ko San Road at 8AM after playing "Flip Flop water polo" with some Dutch ... read more

We took a flight from the Adaman Sea to the Gulf of Thailand to check out some of the islands on the eastern front. We heard that Koh Samui was similar to Phuket so instead of spending much time there we just used it as a stopover one night before heading out to Ko Pha Ngan the next morning. Up to this point our lodging has been great. It seemed the further you wander into island life the quality of the lodging seemed to dwindle off (more on the Koh Tao report). I would have to say that our lodging in Koh Samui was bad. Embarrassed to say I was the one that booked it. It was through the phone with a lady who barely spoke English....I was a tad skeptical, but was trying to be ... read more

What do you mean thats a 1" After two weeks of hell in the Captains Corner sub zero tempreture pool we were all given the title of Divemasters. Gaz, Fus, Ben, Jim, Dean, Phil, Mike and myself all passed our snorkel challenge!!! The course consisted of lots of theory and exams but the skills and care of customers and students was focused on greatly. The experience of the course was mostly theory but dependent on what you had done previously made it easier or harder but now we can all actively participate in all the courses Divemaster's can supervise and conduct independently or with Instructors. The days were spent in the classroom mostly with some days on the boats but the classroom was essential for us to develop lots of knowledge on decompression theory, physics, equipment ... read more
