I’ve always said my life is a bit of a contradiction (that’s right I’m a living oxymoron) but no where is that better illustrated than Thailand. It was a fairly impulsive decision to leave Keys in Laos…… in 6 weeks traveling I’d see no beach so with everyone one we talked to heading towards the Full Moon I decided some R&R with some sun, sea and…… sand mixed in would be just right. Besides the Full Moon I was desperate to get back to The Sanctuary, a yoga retreat I visited 5 years ago on my first trip to Thailand and vowed to return to one day. My original plan was to head straight to the Sanctuary, but I arrived later than I thought in Hadd Rin and trying to get a long tail (it can ... read more

Hey Everyone, We found this super cheap internet place so we thought we'd write another quick blog. We are now on the island of Ko Pha Ngan, just an hour and a half boat ride from Koh Tao. The island is quite a bit bigger, but its gorgeous. We are staying at a place called the Salad Beach Resort (http://www.phangan.info/saladbeach/). After looking at the website, I think we got this place for a steal! We are only paying 900 Baht/day (about 20 USD) and it goes for 1700 Baht /night during the low season (which is right now). Lucky us! Last night we stayed at a place called Haad Son Resort. They had a great pool and the beach was nice. The rooms were ok, except for the massive amount of ants crawling on the walls, ... read more

It was with a bit of trepidation that we approached Ko Pha Ngan, an island infamous for its full-moon parties. It's all well and good to be considered a "backpacker haven," but as any morally superior traveler meandering around Thailand discovers, if Khao San Road is the first and foremost backpacker destination... You'd do well to avoid any places that try to follow in its footsteps. However, despite my best intentions, I found it very hard to do anything but fall in love with the island. True, it is incredibly touristy and over-run with all sorts of backpackers, including those that most sane people avoid at all costs, but it's also indescribably lovely. Although the touts and pushy businesspeople are here as well, the vibe is altogether much more laid back than other places we've encountered ... read more

We arrived on Ko Pha-Ngan the following morning after too many sleep deprived nights, found a place to stay and slept for 4 hours. We had a shower, ate, went to the 'pirate bar' and then slept again. We spent 5 days, 4 nights on the island but there's only 2 nights worth a mention. The main one is of course the full moon party. The other night was one spent at a bar listening to a band (guitar and toms). The night listening to the band was more of a 'right place at right time' moment. We went for a meal at a restaurant called the 'village Green', owned by a British guy called Ben Green. He's been living on the island for 6 years with his Thai wife and offers two very useful services. ... read more

Hello everyone. We're finally having a chance to post from Thailand. Our two main excuses for not having done so sooner: 1) difficult to find internet and 2) too lazy. Hey, it's our vacataion. So, I will fill you in on the last week or so. We flew from Auckland, NZ to Bangkok, spent 2 nights there, then flew to Phuket and spent 3 nights there. After that, 2 nights in Khao Sok National Park (bit north of Phuket), and now we are on an island, Koh Pha Ngan which is on the Gulf of Thailand. You should have a look at the Google Earth simulcast to know where these places are. In short, we are in the south of Thailand on the east side of the penisula. Water and Cambodia are to our east, and ... read more

We came here after Ko Tao and managed to get ourselves some good accomodation and cheap so glad we got here early. However the whole week has been a blur, Andy got food poisoning the first night we arrived which was not very nice. But it only lasted a day or two and he felt beter in time to meet up with everyone that we met in vang vieng. Since then its all been a bit hazy as they are bad influences to say the least!! Alot of alcohol has been consumed and after our 3 week break (in an attempt to get healthy again!) Our bodies do not seem happy about it. Saturday was the full moon, it was crazy 20,000 people partying on a beach til sunset!!! Really is a recipe for disaster. It ... read more

Any excuse for a party. It's a fair accusation, and a full moon is a fairly lame excuse. It's just nature, it happens 13 times a year, and in most parts of the world, without lycanthropy, passes off without note. Not on Koh Pha Ngan, the next island on from Koh Samui, the scene of one of the largest beach parties in the world, every single month, the other locations for such revelry are Ios in Greece, and somewhere in Goa, India. I met people at this party that had been to all three - this is the original and biggest. The reputation of the full moon party is for excess, dancing and drugs. To be honest drugs would have been easy to get hold of, many of the cafés will “serve” special requests, but on ... read more

After landing in Bangkok and meeting up with Kym (YAY!) we headed down for a night on Ko Samui and then to Ko Pha Ngan for the purpose of this little island getaway.. Full Moon Party!.. After a night in a Ko Samui bungulow under the flightpath of all planes heading to the island (the palm trees by the pool shook as planes flew overhead about every hour - on the half and quarter hour if we were lucky!) we were ready for a big night out fuelling ourselves with homemade vanilla and redskin vodkas from the balcony of our tree house villa! Full moon party attracts about 15-20,000 people (largely the israeli, italian and french community!- and they all know how to party!) is set on Had Rin, a stretch of the southern coast and ... read more

I feel so relaxed. have been lazing about on the beach for ages. its so beautiful. I'm quite used to Thailand now which is good. At first the sights and sounds of Bangkok espeicially are quite overwhelming. I leave for Vietnam this afternoon and have booked the plane for Xiamen, China after that. I love the shopping here but i've got so much junk now i can barely carry it. deciding to post some junk home was the obvious choice, unfortunately once i got to the post office yesterday it was closeing and i was assured it would be open 9-12 the next day. on my return appearing carrying four bags full of junk through bangkok they were closed! The thai people outside must have thought i was mad. Sweating and angriliy gesturing at the closed ... read more
